TOKYO, Aug 21, 2003 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.
(NTT) is negotiating with Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) to acquire a 30%
stake in the Net services provider for 10-20 billion yen, a business daily
reported Thursday.
The move marks a policy turnaround for IIJ, which once attempted to form a
telecom alliance to counter NTT, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said in its evening
editions.
NTT will decide on the exact amount of its investment in IIJ, listed on the U.S.
Nasdaq market, after assessing the firm`s stock price and the value of its
assets, the newspaper said.
IIJ had a negative net worth of 2.8 billion yen at the end of fiscal 2002 to
March 31 under U.S. accounting standards, the paper said.
NTT will most likely purchase slightly more than a 30% stake in IIJ, it said.
In July last year, IIJ unveiled a plan to merge with PoweredCom Inc., a new
telecom carrier affiliated with Tokyo Electric Power Co., in a bid to compete
with NTT. But the plan was scrapped in March after talks bogged down over
leadership of the new firm and following a scandal related to a cover-up of
defects at Tokyo Electric Power`s nuclear power plants.
With competition intensifying in the telecom market, IIJ has seen its business
deteriorate. On Wednesday, an affiliate, Crosswave Communications Inc. (CWC),
applied to the Tokyo District Court for protection from creditors under the
Corporate Rehabilitation Law.
The failure of CWC, which provides data communications services to corporate
customers, is expected to result in a 10 billion yen loss for IIJ, which
apparently prompted the firm to turned to NTT to replenish its capital base, the
paper said.
NTT, for its part, aims to enhance its future core operations, such as broadband
and corporate data communications services, through the purchase of a stake in
IIJ, it said.
IIJ`s major shareholders include Sumitomo Corp., which holds 7% of the company,
and Itochu Corp. with a 6.9% stake.
IIJ, a pioneer Internet-based firm, was set up in 1992.
