CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sep 3, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRIS) today announced that it has been issued U.S. patent 6,613,798, entitled "Mediators of Hedgehog Signaling Pathways, Compositions, and Uses Related Thereto." The claims of this patent cover pharmaceutical compositions of small molecules (traditional drug-like compounds) that are under development by Curis as treatments for Parkinson`s disease, stroke, and other neurological disorders.
Parkinson`s disease and stroke are two areas of significant unmet medical need. The National institutes of Health estimates that there are at least 500,000 people in the United States who suffer from the effects of Parkinson`s disease with approximately 50,000 new cases reported annually. It is also estimated that there are as many as 700,000 strokes each year in the U.S.
The pharmaceutical compositions covered by this newly issued patent are small molecule agonists (activators) of the Hedgehog signaling pathway, one of the major regulatory mechanisms the body uses to develop and maintain various tissues, including those of the central and peripheral nervous system. The Hedgehog signaling pathway, which has been shown to be involved in the repair of nerve tissues when damaged or traumatized, is normally activated by the interaction of Hedgehog proteins with their receptors.
Dr. Lee Rubin, Curis` Chief Scientific Officer said, "The development of the small molecule Hedgehog pathway agonists has been one of Curis` most important scientific advances and one of our most significant developmental successes. Na die "Creativen" geben ja ein deutliches Lebenszeichen von sich. Wenn ich mir die Pipeline anschaue so kann ich nur auf Geduld setzen. Da finden sich eine Menge potentielle Blockbuster. Überhaupt scheint mir der theoretische Ansatz über den Hedgehog pathway höchst vielversprechend.
Allein das mögliche Verhindern oder zumindest die Prognoseverbesserung bezüglich des neurologischen Defizites beim spinalen (Rückenmark) Trauma, wäre eine echter Meilenstein der Medizingeschichte.
Auf dieser Aktie bleibt man einfach mal eine geraume Zeit einfach nur sitzen und harrt der Dinge die da kommen.

Unglaublich!!! Curis und Gene Logic sind die beiden einzigen Biotech Aktien, die ich noch aus den guten alten zeiten im Portfolio habe. Tut sich da bei Curis etwa was?

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Drug developer Curis Inc. said Friday it will stop developing a skin cancer drug with biotech drug maker Genentech Inc., and conclude its work with the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation.
Curis said it wishes to focus on developing later-stage drug, in the hopes of being able to bring lead candidates to market.
Curis and Genentech had stopped enrolling patients in an early-stage clinical trial for a basal cell carcinoma treatment in July after it appeared the topical drug may not penetrate human skin. Curis spent about $8.4 million in co-development costs on the program, and had planned to spend a total of $20 million through mid-stage clinical trials.
Genentech is now responsible for any further development costs for the skin cancer treatment, which was part of a larger collaboration that is not affected by Curis' withdrawal. Beginning in 2003, the collaboration covers the development of treatments for systemic solid tumor cells.
Curis said it will still be eligible for milestone payments and royalties should Genentech continue with the skin cancer drug.
The company also said all remaining spinal muscular research should be finished by the end of November, and that all direct costs through that date will be fully funded by the SMA Foundation.
In September 2004, Curis received a grant from SMA under which it would receive up to $5.4 million over three years to identify compounds that could potentially treat SMA, a neurological disease that is the leading genetic cause of infant and toddler death.
Through June 30, Curis recorded about $3.4 million in revenue from the SMA Foundation, and incurred about $1 million of additional research expenses in support of this program. Curis expects that terminating the relationship will eliminate much of this incremental cost.
Shares of Curis fell 6 cents, or 4.8 percent, to $1.20 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. Shares have traded between 91 cents and $4.92 over the past 52 weeks. Genentech shares fell 37 cents to $82.15 on the New York Stock Exchange.
