LOS ANGELES, Sept 23 (Reuters) - USANA Health Sciences Inc. (USNA) , a maker of nutritional,
personal care and weight management products, said on Tuesday third-quarter profit would beat estimates
as it benefits from a tax gain and past investment in infrastructure.
The company, based in Salt Lake City, still expects sales to be near $52 million for the quarter ending Sept.
27, but earnings will be around 54 cents per share, compared with initial guidance of 43 cents to 45 cents.
The estimate includes a gain of 3 cents per share from adjusting its effective tax rate for 2003.
Shares of USANA, which rose 11.4 percent to close at $52.15 on Nasdaq, were trading higher at $54.52
after hours on Instinet.
"We continue to see operating margin improvements as we leverage the physical and information
technology infrastructure investments made over the last several years," Chief Financial Officer Gilbert Fuller
said in a statement.
The company said it would announce third-quarter earnings along with new guidance for the fourth quarter
and fiscal 2004 on Oct. 14.

USANA, Inc beats Q3 guidance, raises Q4 forecast; announces 2-for-1 split (USNA) 54.74 -3.45: Co reports $0.57 in EPS on $52.5 mln in sales, vs Sept 23 guidance of $0.54 in EPS and $52 mln in sales (there are no analyst estimates). Co also announces a 2-for-1 split. Co raises their Q4 guidance to $0.57-$0.59 and sales approaching $57 mln, and sees 2004 EPS of $2.45-$2.55 on $240-$250 mln in sales.
was haltet ihr von den Zahlen?
-zu den $0.57 in EPS folgendes: "Earnings per share for the third quarter increased to $0.57 per share, from $0.22 per share in the third quarter of 2002. The increase includes $0.04 per share from a re-estimate of the company`s effective tax rate for fiscal year 2003 and $0.02 per share resulting from foreign currency gains."
-weiterhin:
"Co reports $0.57 in EPS on $52.5 mln in sales, vs Sept 23 guidance of $0.54 in EPS and $52 mln in sales (the lone analyst est from Seidler saw $0.54 and $52.9 mln)"
-> demnach Umsatzschätzungen des Analysten leicht verfehlt
-"Co raises their Q4 guidance to $0.57-$0.59 and sales approaching $57 mln (estimate $0.59 and $57 mln)"
-> genau die Schätzung getroffen
-"and sees 2004 EPS of $2.45-$2.55 on $240-$250 mln in sales (estimate $2.58 and $247.6 mln)."

ERES
ERESEARCH TECHNOLOGY, INC. (Nasdaq: ERES)
Market Cap - $735 million - Shares Outstanding - 22 million -
Buy Below - $43
eResearch Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq-ERES) is the kind of stock
that many investors would most likely skip over. Many times
investors will only buy stocks that they can understand, and
rightly so. In fact, it took me over one hour to fully
understand what type of business ERES is in. That was time well
worth taking. What I found out about ERES is that it is an
800-pound gorilla in a very narrow niche. Those are the kinds of
stocks that I love to own. First, a little in the way of what
ERES does. It provides the technology that enables the
pharmaceutical, biotechnological, medical device, and contract
resource companies to collect, interpret, and distribute cardiac
safety and clinical data more efficiently. It is also the market
leader in providing centralized electrocardiographic (diagnostic)
services and a leading provider of technology and services
designed to streamline the clinical trial process by enabling
its customers to automate many parts of a clinical trial.
I am really interested in how much it dominates its industry.
ERES three closest competitors (CVGR, CAP, and DATA) market
caps combined are less than 10% of ERES.The gross margins of
ERES are an eye-popping 58%, compared to the industry average
of 35%. It has also grown its revenue in the past twelve months
by 48%, while the industry growth over that same time period was
only 12%.
How well management is running the company is reflected in the
return on capital (ROC). The ROC tells me if management is
efficient and profitable while at the helm. Very few companies
that trade on the NYSE, AMEX, and OTC have a ROC greater than
15% per annum. The ROC of ERES is over 24%. Another factor that
might not pop up on many investors radar screens is the amount
of shares that are held as short positions. These are bets by
traders as to the future direction of the stock.
Basically, traders are betting that the stock will fall so they
can buy it back much cheaper then when they sold it, thereby
creating a profit. The higher the short interest in a stock, the
more potential for a sharp rise higher. Why? Because if the
stock rises, those traders who sold the stock short will have
to scramble to buy back the stock before it goes any higher and
creates huge losses for them. In fact, when the shorts start to
cover, sharp and quick moves happen. Bullishly, I might add,
the short position in ERES is rather high. Over 26% of the
outstanding shares of ERES are held as short positions. As ERES
continues to increase revenue and the stock moves higher, I
think we will get a nice surge in the stock price, as the shorts
have to cover.
According to my numbers, this is a stock that should be selling
close to the $60 range over the next three to five years. It is
currently trading in the mid- to high-$30s, so ERES has a large
upside potential. Place a sell stop at 25% below your entry
price. As the stock rises, continue to raise your stop so that
you are trailing the Friday close by 25%.

USANA upgraded at Seidler (USNA) 36.96 : Seidler upgrades to Buy from Hold, issues FY04 ests above mgmt`s guidance, and raises their target to $38.75 from $31; firm says USNA has historically beaten its own guidance, and they believe this will continue in FY04, and their new ests assume continuing improvements and traction in Japan, a strong opening in Mexico, continuing scale and cost efficiencies via increasing sales, and a rising associate base.

USNA: Is this what happened?
just my own speculated scenario:
Some brokerage or another " big bucks" entity decides usna, a normally volitile stock, is getting overpriced. So they short sell...but not just a few shares. They put up a few large blocks at market right at the open. This immediately and quickly drives down the price, and in the process, triggers stop losses and the weak holders to bail. This additional selling keeps the price down as the bargain hunters jump in. The following day`s open, our " big bucks" short seller repeats this. Now the moderate longs start to see their loss become more significant and they too sell to cut their losses. Our unknown here is at what point does short selling become a money losing idea. We`ve seen a drop of 25% in two days. This is when the fundamentals make the difference. Is it a good company or not?

"Also ihr schrägen Amis! Sucht euch nen anderen Spielplatz aus und lasst Usana in Ruhe!"

USANA Reports Record Fourth Quarter Financial Results; Net Sales up 55%; Net
Earnings up 107%
2/3/2004 4:05:00 PM
SALT LAKE CITY, Feb 3, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- USANA Health Sciences Inc. (USNA) today announced record financial results for the fiscal fourth quarter and
year ended Jan. 3, 2004.
Net sales for the quarter ended Jan. 3, 2004 were $59.5 million, up 55% from the $38.3 million reported
for the fourth quarter of 2002. The total number of active Associates increased by 22,000 to
approximately 88,000 from the prior year fourth quarter and was the key driver of this revenue growth.
Net sales were affected positively in the fourth quarter by stronger foreign currencies relative to the U.S.
dollar. Excluding the impact of foreign currency, sales growth would still have been 44%.
Net earnings for the fourth quarter were $6.8 million, up 107% from $3.3 million in net earnings reported for
the prior year`s fourth quarter. Earnings per share for the fourth quarter increased to $0.32 per share, from
$0.16 per share for the fourth quarter of 2002. This increase includes $0.02 per share from a favorable
adjustment of the company`s effective tax rate for the fourth quarter of 2003.
Due to the company`s accounting cycle, fiscal 2003 comprised 53 weeks rather than the typical 52 weeks.
Therefore, the fourth quarter of 2003 was a 14-week period, compared to a typical 13-week quarter. As a
result, net sales for the fourth quarter were affected positively by nearly $4 million, and earnings per share
for the quarter improved by approximately $0.02.
For the fiscal year ended Jan. 3, 2004, net sales were $200 million, an increase of 50%, compared with
$133.8 million reported for the full fiscal year 2002. Net earnings for fiscal year 2003 were $20.8 million, up
145% from the $8.5 million in net earnings reported for the prior year. Earnings per share for 2003 were
$0.98 per share, compared with $0.41 per share for the full fiscal year 2002.
"The growth in our sales during the fourth quarter is primarily the result of the dedication of our Associates in
selling our advanced, scientifically based nutritional products," said Dave Wentz, president of USANA. "We
have continued to invest in our Associates and are committed to providing them with the resources
necessary to be successful. Our active Associate base for the fourth quarter of 2003 was 33% higher than
our base for the fourth quarter of 2002. We opened our operations in Singapore in November, where more
than 1,000 new Associates attended our ribbon-cutting ceremony. We believe that Singapore will be a
strategic market for USANA, as we plan for future expansion in the Asia Pacific region."
Commenting on the fourth quarter and year-end results, Gilbert A. Fuller, chief financial officer, said, "This
was another record quarter for both sales and earnings, further demonstrating the effectiveness of the direct
selling channel for distributing our high-quality, scientifically developed products. Even absent the extra
week this quarter, our sales still would have increased to approximately $56 million, a 46% increase
compared with the fourth quarter of 2002.
"Building on the continued strength of our operating performance in each of our markets, we now expect that
sales for the first quarter of 2004 will approach $60 million, with earnings per share of approximately $0.31,
depending upon the timing and success of our opening in Mexico. For the full year 2004, we believe that
sales will be in the range of $245 to $255 million and that earnings per share will be between $1.35 and
$1.40, based on an estimated 34% tax rate.
"We continued to improve our balance sheet during the fourth quarter and ended the year with no debt and $19 million in cash and cash equivalents," Fuller concluded.
