Norilsk Transfers Gold Fields Stake To Polyus
      25.04.2005 11:23
Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel said Friday it has transferred its 20.05% stake in South African gold producer Gold Fields to a separate holding company as part of its plan to spin off its gold assets.

Norilsk’s gold production unit Polyus, which incorporates Norilsk`s primary gold assets, will likely consolidate the stake in June.

      Hi humm,

      Meinungen??

Norilsk Nickel Targeting Top Ten Gold Producers
      19.04.2005 6:30
Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel has confirmed that it will spin off and list its gold assets.

Russian biggest gold and nickel producer plans to be ranked with its gold unit Polyus about the seventh most valuable gold producer in the world with an estimated market value of some $3 billion.

At current estimated values Polyus would be ranked behind Australia’s Newcrest and ahead of Peru’s Buenaventura.

Its 1 million ounces of gold production a year would place Polyus in tenth position in the world, also behind Newcrest. By reserves it would be ranked eighth, once again behind Newcrest and ahead of Western Areas.

S.Africa`s Gold Fields has plans for Norilsk - paper
      Mon April 18, 2005 10:20 AM GMT+02:00

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African gold miner Gold Fields Ltd is working on an international strategy that may involve its major shareholder Norilsk Nickel of Russia, Chief Executive Ian Cockerill told Business Day on Monday.

"Norilsk is a great local partner, and they know how to operate in that part of the world, and nothing would give me more potential than working with Norilsk," Cockerill told the paper.

But the world`s fourth biggest gold producer was unable go public with its plans while it remains the target of Harmony`s hostile takeover bid.

He said Gold Fields had a track record of mining in "far and away places", but this usually required a "great" local partner.

Gold Fields is fighting off a takeover bid from smaller rival Harmony which has the backing of Norilsk -- Gold Fields` biggest shareholder with a 20 percent holding.

The Russian firm`s irrevocable undertaking to support Harmony`s bid is due to expire in May 20. The deal would be worth an estimated $6 billion.

Most analysts have written off the possibility that Norilsk would extend the undertaking, although Harmony`s Chief Executive Bernard Swanepoel has said Harmony might have a strong interest in extending it.

Gold Fields shares opened 2.53 percent lower at 65.40 rand while Harmony was 0.34 percent weaker at 43.86. The gold index was 1.73 percent softer.

Norilsk Gold Unit Enters International Market
      18.04.2005 7:52
Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel’s subsidiary Polyus said it will enter international capital markets.

To do that, the company plans to list shares in New York or Toronto with a valuation of more than $3 billion, or to merge with a foreign company after 2007.

Thus Norilsk Nickel plans to turn its gold unit into a global mining group and is likely to draw investors wanting a stake in Russian gold.

Norilsk Nickel "overweight," target price raised

      Wednesday, April 13, 2005 1:43:04 PM ET
      Morgan Stanley

LONDON, April 13 (newratings.com) – Analyst Amos Fletcher of Morgan Stanley reiterates his "overweight" rating on Norilsk Nickel (ticker: GMKN). The target price has been raised from $62 to $72.

In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the planned spin-off of the company`s Polyus gold unit is likely to be worth about $23 per share. Morgan Stanley expects the imminent spin-off of Norilsk Nickel`s gold business to leave the company`s core nickel business undervalued.
