PAUL KANGAS: My guest market monitor this week is Dr. Hans Black, Chairman of Interinvest, a global money management firm with offices in Switzerland, Canada, Bermuda and Boston, Massachusetts. Welcome back to NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT, Hans.

KANGAS: You know, you were last with us April 11 of this year. The Dow was around 8,200 and you were the most optimistic you had been in years. And, boy, what a good call. Let`s take a look at the recommendations you made last April. We see Corning (GLW) at $5 and change. It`s now almost $11. Red Hat (RHAT) was $5.65. it`s now over $12.50. Those were great recommendations. And Foundry Networks (FDRY) you liked at $9, said "buy" it. It`s $23 and change. Microsoft (MSFT) didn`t do much. It`s only up about $0.80 or so. You still like all of these?

BLACK: I think some of these gas companies, we all know about the problems, but that one in particular looks very cheap to us. And one of the other technology stocks, we like the company NOVELL (NOVL). And they recently made a deal with IBM (IBM) and is involved in the Linux area and very well positioned.

KANGAS: Boy, this thing has had an awfully strong run up recently. You still like it though?

BLACK: We do.

KANGAS: OK. You`re not afraid of buying something in an uptrend, obviously.

BLACK: Well, we look at fundamentals and --

KANGAS: And you do own all of these new recommendations, as well?

BLACK: We own them all, yes.

Bit-Betriebssystem vor, das auf einem PC mit dem AMD-Athlon 64 Prozessor jede
Frage beantworten konnte.
Ein staunender und überzeugter Windows-User bat dem LINUX-Programmierer dem
Programm folgende Frage zu beantworten:
"Wo ist zur Zeit mein Vater"?
Das TFT-Display verdunkelte sich etwas, das Programm begann zu arbeiten und
der Athlon 64 zu rechnen und zu rechnen.
Plötzlich leuchtete das Display hell auf und es erschien die Antwort:
"Ihr Vater sitzt an der Strommeile 712 am Mississippi und angelt"
"Ha" lachte der Microsoft-Infizierte. "Sch... LINUX, mein Vater ist schon
lange tot"
Der LINUX-Programmierer gab die Bestätigung ein:
Vater schon lange tot.
Darauf das Programm:
Tot, ist der Ehemann Ihrer Mutter, Ihr Vater sitzt immer noch am Mississippi
und angelt !

Novell bietet Schutz vor SCO
Softwarekonzern zahlt seinen Linux-KundInnen bis zu 1,5 Millionen US-Dollar im Falle eines Rechtsstreits – Kauf von SUSE abgeschlossen

Der Softwarehersteller Novell bietet seinen Linux-
KundInnen nun Schutz gegen juristische Angriffe von Seiten des angeblichen Unix-Rechteinhabers SCO. Bis zu 1,5 Millionen US-Dollar – oder dem 1,25-fachen Wert des Softwareeinkaufes - will der Konzern im Rahmen eines "Indemnification Programs" für juristische Streitigkeiten bereitstellen.

Mit dem neuen Angebot will Novell verhindern, dass auf potentielle KundInnen von Seiten SCOs Druck ausgeübt werden kann, wodurch die Verbreitung von Linux behindert werden könnte. Novell ist zwar nicht die erste Firma, die ihren KundInnen solchen Schutz anbietet, allerdings wird der Firma durch ihre spezielle Position in diesem Streit – Novell erhebt selbst Anspruch auf zahlreiche Unix-Rechte – besondere Bedeutung zugemessen.

SUSE=Novell

Gleichzeitig wurde am Montag die Übernahme von SuSE Linux abgeschlossen. 210 Millionen US-Dollar hat Novell für den Linux-Distributor springen lassen, im Gegenzug gab es dafür ein 50 Millionen US-Dollar schweres Investment von IBM beim Softwarehersteller.

Komplettes Linux-Angebot

Nach der Übernahme des Linux-Spezialisten bietet Novell ein komplettes Linux-Angebot vom Unternehmensserver bis zum einzelnen Computerarbeitsplatz aus einer Hand an. Das Unternehmen will damit eine weitere Stärkung des Geschäfts mit Linux sowie eine bessere Stellung gegenüber dem Hauptkonkurrenten und Erzrivalen Microsoft gewinnen. Das Stammprodukt von Novell, die Netzwerk-Software "Netware", hatte Ende der achtziger Jahre noch den Markt dominiert. In den neunziger Jahren wurde Novells Marktanteil dann zunehmend durch die "Windows- NT"-Systeme von Microsoft verdrängt.

400 Mitarbeiter

Mit seinen rund 400 Mitarbeitern gilt SuSE Linux als einer der führenden Anbieter von Software und Dienstleistungen rund um Linux. Das im Jahr 1991 von dem Finnen Linus Torvalds programmierte Betriebssystem wird von Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates als die größte Bedrohung der Vorherrschaft des Microsoft-Systems Windows angesehen. SuSE and Dell buddy up

SuSE and Dell plan to share the limelight next week at LinuxWorld with the two companies refining their shared support and certification agreements, The Register has learned.

Dell, a longtime Red Hat backer and investor, will work with SuSE to certify its operating system with various hardware products, most notably servers, according to industry sources. The two companies are also looking to improve their shared support services to make sure customers are more readily taken care of when problems arise.

A better relationship with Dell is good news for SuSE as it tries to gain ground on Red Hat in the US. SuSE has enjoyed a tight partnership with IBM, but Dell and HP tend to promote Red Hat more often than not.

That said, SuSE and Dell already share some customers who will no doubt benefit from closer links between the companies. Some of the supported Dell systems can be found here on SuSE`s Web site.

SuSE this week became an official part of Novell. With the $210 million acquisition complete, Novell is offering Linux users indemnification against any IP attacks from SCO.

As an aside, Dell`s relationship with Linux has been most intriguing over the years. The company was the first major hardware vendor to offer Linux from the desktop to its highest end server and invested in companies such as Red Hat and Eazel early on. Then, however, Dell abruptly pulled the plug on its Linux desktop efforts. Many industry observers have said the desktop flirtation was meant to give Microsoft a bit of a scare and little else.

Unlike Red Hat, SuSE still has strong desktop ambitions, particularly now that is partnered with Ximian at Novell. Dell happens to be offering SuSE Linux 9.0 at this time.
