02/23/2000 1:28:36 PM ETThe 50-50 joint venture, named TranscosmosChinadotcom (TC3), will be set
up in Hong Kong by the end of next month with a capital of $5 million. The partners plan to inject another $50 million in the new company`s business.
“TC3 will offer incubation and consultant services to Internet-related
companies in the Asia-Pacific region and U.S. Internet firms that plan to
enter Asian markets including Japanese market”, said Tokuhiro Ihara, a
      spokesman from Trans Cosmos.
The new company will also target Japanese Internet-firms which aim to step out to other Asian markets, as well as to help Internet-related firms in the region enter the Japanese market.
There is no plan to list the new company at this moment, Ihara said.
Shares of Trans Cosmos closed at 47,250 yen, down 650 yen or 1.36 percent, ahead of the announcement. Chinadotcom’s (CHINA: news, msgs) shares closed at 127 ½, down 6 ¾, or 5.0 percent in Nasdaq market Tuesday.
The announcement came a day after the Japanese firm unveiled a venture capital company in Hong Kong with a capital of $75 million to support Internet-related startups in Asia.
Trans Cosmos last Friday enjoyed a more than 6 percent share gain on news that it has teamed up with Listen.com Inc, a U.S. Web directory devoted to downloadable music, to set up a joint venture in Japan to introduce a Japanese version of the site.
