Technical Update on Irish Atlantic Margin Prospects
& Participation in the Atlantic Ireland 2012 Conference, Dublin
Highlights:
· Detailed modeling has outlined a one billion barrel potential on Quad 35; part of our 11/4 Licencing Option.
· Targets are accessible with one well (i.e. vertically stacked targets) having been mapped at several levels.
· Petrel has mapped closure at its Quad 45 prospects against a major boundary fault and outlined a number of vertically stacked targets.
Petrel Resources (AIM: PET) today provides a technical update on work done on its 100 per cent owned Quad 35 Licensing Options (11/4 and 11/6) on Blocks 35/23, 35/24 and the western half of 35/25, and Quad 45 Blocks 45/6, 45/11 and 45/16 in the Atlantic Margin. These are located in the highly prospective South Porcupine Basin, in the Irish Atlantic Margin.
These blocks cover approximately 1,400 kilometres squared in total, in the northern and eastern sections of the Porcupine Basin.
David Horgan, Managing Director of Petrel, commented: "We have long known that Ireland's offshore Porcupine Basin is a hydrocarbon province. There are established petroleum systems, reservoir sands and possible traps at several levels. Our recent work has identified a number of high-potential prospects, at least one of which, we believe, has a billion barrel potential.
"Petrel will be presenting technical details of its work to date at the Atlantic Ireland Conference 2012, Dublin on Monday 12th November 2012."
Quad 35: Stacked targets have been mapped at Eocene (Lower Tertiary), Lower Cretaceous and locally Jurassic levels. This facilitates drilling and testing of several targets with one well.
Eocene Target
• The Eocene deltaic sand bodies lie in an ideal position for the entrapment of northward migrating hydrocarbons, generated from mature Middle / Upper Jurassic and possibly Lower Cretaceous source rocks.
• Updip seal is provided by marine flooding mudstone deposits.
• Drill depths to the top of the Eocene sand sequence are about 2,500 metres subsea, in water depths of 700-800 metre.
• Thick reservoir quality deltaic and shallow marine sandstones have been drilled in earlier wells in the region.
• The mapped sandbodies have the capability to host in-place reserves in excess of one billion barrels
Lower Cretaceous Target
• A large mounded feature with four-way dip closure is onlapped by mud-prone seismic facies. It is interpreted as a basin floor fan deposit, infilling and mounding residual Late Jurassic topography.
• The structure is undrilled but the seismic signature is significantly different from the mud-prone Lower Cretaceous strata drilled within the basin.
• The large mounded feature directly overlies Upper Jurassic strata with proven mature source rocks.
Quad 45: Stacked targets have also been mapped at Lower Tertiary and Lower Cretaceous levels:
• Substantial area of structural closure forming a trap at Lower Cretaceous level against the major basin boundary fault.
• Early Tertiary eastward updip thinning and stratigraphic pinchout of interpreted sand-prone succession.
• Mounded, prograding Aptian-Albian basin-edge fan with updip shale drape / trap.
• Basal Cretaceous target horizons pinch out through onlap onto the basin margin.
• Drill depths of up to 3,000 metres to the Lower Cretaceous marker in approximately 1,000 m water depth.
• Thick untested reservoirs derived from an easterly source (i.e. Celtic Platform).
These results are derived from Petrel's extensive database and updated in the following work programme, which has advanced rapidly in recent months:
• Purchase of additional 2D seismic lines and re-interpretation of the integrated data set across both option areas.
• Purchase of 3D seismic data, which is now being interpreted. The 1999-2005 survey covers only the eastern portion of the Quad 35 blocks.
• Petrophysical appraisal of 17 wells.
• Inversion of selected 2D seismic lines to assess targeted reservoir sections.
• Petrel Resources is funding two MSc research students at the UCD School of Geological Sciences at University College Dublin.
o A seismic project to detail the depositional facies and character of the identified sand bodies and potential reservoirs.
o A study of the provenance of the reservoir successions using petrographic analysis, followed by the application of the Lead-in-feldspar technique.
Next steps will include:
• Completion of acoustic inversion of selected lines to assist in the assessment of the targeted reservoir sections.
• Completion of the 3D seismic data interpretation in the south-east part of Quad 35.
• A seismic / sequence stratigraphic project is underway to characterise the depositional facies of the Lower Tertiary and Lower Cretaceous successions in the option blocks.
• A provenance study, involving petrographic analysis and the application of Lead-in-Potassium-feldspar geochemistry of the Lower Tertiary and Lower Cretaceous successions is underway.
Petrel Resources is a diversified oil and gas exploration and production company, with interests in Ghana, Ireland and Iraq. The company has a signed petroleum agreement in Ghana, holds two licences in offshore Ireland and recently completed an exploration and production joint venture contract in Iraq.

Excited punters stampeded into highly speculative Petrel Resources after it announced a target off Ireland’s West Coast contained a billion barrels of potential oil.
The target in the South Porcupine Basin of the Irish Atlantic Margin is located on a licensing option 100 per cent-owned by Petrel.
News of the ‘find’ and talk of a possible ‘farm in’ by an oil major, possibly Exxon, helped the stock more-than-treble and close 21.12p higher at 27.12p.

Clontarf Energy an. Gleiche Adresse, gleiche Tel.nummer..
Was meint ihr?

Connemara Mining, Botswana Dismonds, African Diamonds, Persian Gold...

Oil find could transform Kerry
Drilling on course for 2014, as Council pushes Fenit
The exploration company behind the discovery of an estimated billion barrels of oil off the Kerry coast is now seeking backing to sink a $100 million well and begin drilling by 2014.
Petrel Resources boss John Teeling said the discovery of what he described as a “jumbo oil field” in the Porcupine Basin, 200km from the coast and under 1km of water, is already attracting attention from the largest oil companies in the world.
“It’s big boys’ stuff now,” Mr Teeling told Kerry’s Eye this week.
Kerry County Council has already moved to get in on the discovery and has opened talks with third parties in an effort to promote Fenit as the possible base for any future oil field operation.
Petrel Resources confirmed this week that its discovery is now top of their investment agenda.
They have shifted their attention from projects in Iraq and Ghana to Kerry, and have begun pitching to potential partners which are listed among the top 50 oil companies in the world.
They have also begun the process of applying for an exploration license from the Irish Government which they hope to secure by the end of next year.
Mr Teeling said that the extraction of oil from the Porcupine Basin could transform the economy of Kerry and the entire West coast.
He compared its potential to Aberdeen in Scotland, the oil capital of Europe, where up to 500,000 jobs have been created around the petroleum industry.
Ideal
Any direct benefits to Kerry are likely to come only come by way of the oil field base - the site on land from which operations would be directed and from where much of the initial construction work would be carried out.
Kerry County Council, which has already entered talks with a third party on behalf of Petrel Resources, is pushing Fenit as the ideal location from which to run the drilling and shipping operation.
But Fenit faces stiff competition from a number of other ports along the west coast, including Foynes in Limerick.
Mr Teeling said the discovery off Kerry now means his company will have to seek a partner to help fund an exploration drill.
“Computer analysis has shown us that about 2,500 metres deep in the Porcupine, there is a very large structure which has the potential to hold oil.
“We know this because very similar structures, also in the Atlantic, have already produced very large reserves,” Mr Teeling said.
And Mr Teeling said the he is confident that Petrel Resources will be successful in securing a partner to sink a well off Kerry and strike oil.
“Am I confident about finding oil? Yes I am. Am I confident it will be us? I don’t know.
“All I know is that a billion barrels of oil potential is extremely significant. Porcupine is now number one on our list to get a partner in the next 12 months.”
While the discovery of oil off the Kerry coast is not new, this week’s revelation has notched up significant interest around the world.
Shares in Petrel Resources, which is listed in the Irish and London stock exchanges, rocketed by 350% after Monday’s announcement of the Porcupine Basin discovery.
The sheer quantity of the oil field, the current price of oil at $100 a barrel and new technology means the discovery is likely to attract interest from international oil giants like Esso, Exxon and British Petroleum

Petrel Oil may be worth up to €3.5bn in taxes
John Teeling, the chairman of exploration firm Petrel Resources, has said Irish oil prospects could pay the entire cost of austerity in December's Budget or €3.5bn a year.
Mr Teeling, whose Petrel has identified a target off the west coast with the potential to produce one billion barrels of oil, said he was hopeful that Ireland's reignited oil industry could produce enough oil to eventually make the country energy independent.
"There is still risk of course," he said. "The only lie detector in the world is a drill hole."
Petrel plans to embark on a road-show to the Far East, China and Middle East with its new technical data. "This is like the wildcatters in the old days," Mr Teeling said. "You take extreme risks and then the big companies come in."
Mr Teeling estimated between €60m and €100m would need to be invested to bring a project to fruition. Petrel's share price rose by up to 350 per cent last week.
Mr Teeling said Petrel had spent about €1m collecting and analysing seismic data to date.

They have shifted their attention from projects in Iraq and Ghana to Kerry, and have begun pitching to potential partners which are listed among the top 50 oil companies in the world.
They have also begun the process of applying for an exploration license from the Irish Government which they hope to secure by the end of next year.

The real story behind the Irish oil rush
..
Porcupine Basin holds ‘promising geology’
What Petrel Resources actually said was that its examination of two prospects in the Porcupine Basin out in the deep and rough waters of the Atlantic margin to the west of Ireland had found promising geology.
The first was that Petrel reckons one prospect is big enough to have "one billion barrel potential" - that is where that headline came from!
The second is that there are other prospects at different stratigraphic levels. Essentially these are on top of one another like layers on a cake. The obvious advantage of this is that they can all be penetrated by the drilling of a single well, which cuts overall drilling costs and boosts the chance of success.

Petrel Resources plc
Board Change
It is with great regret that the board reluctantly accepts the resignation with immediate effect of Guy Delbès. Following his 84th birthday Guy is seeking to reduce his business interests.
A former French diplomat, Guy Delbès has served with distinction on the Board of Petrel Resources plc since 2000. His energy and optimism belie his five decades of Middle East experience.
A fluent Arabic speaker, Guy facilitated the Company's entrance into the Iraqi Oil Industry. Throughout the period of sanctions and conflict, he operated in hazardous and challenging environments without complaint and displayed a quiet courage that calmed everyone he worked with. He led from the front, travelling in Baghdad and elsewhere during the worst of the issues in-country. He was always courteous, exuding an air of experience and agreeable authority that calmed nervous young militia at check-points.
The Company will be appointing a replacement non-executive Director on or before 8th February 2012.

Technical Update on Irish Atlantic Margin Prospects
Petrel Resources (AIM:PET) is pleased to announce that it has now completed the initial work on its two highly prospective Licencing Options (1,400km2) in the promising and under-explored Porcupine Basin, offshore west Ireland. It is now moving forward in talks with prospective partners. Option 11/4 in the North of the basin covers Blocks 35/23, 35/24 and the western half of 35/25 and the second option 11/6 in the East of the basin covers Blocks 45/6, 45/11 and 45/16. In addition to the previously identified potential on Quad 35,
Quad 45 (Option 11/6) has the capability to hold several hundred million barrels of in-place oil.
Interest in the Porcupine Basin continues to rise with the nearby ExxonMobil well about to be spudded on the Dunquin prospect. The basin contains known working petroleum systems at Jurassic and Cretaceous levels, with oil/gas shows recorded in most of the 29 exploration wells drilled in previous times. Flows of high API, good quality oil have been recorded from three wells, with condensate flows recorded in a fourth well. Mature source rocks are proven in the Jurassic and are also likely in the Lower Cretaceous. Good quality reservoir sands have been recorded at Jurassic, Early Cretaceous and Early Tertiary levels.
Since award of the Options, the company has purchased additional 2D seismic data, 3D seismic data and well logs to supplement its data base and has carried out further regional seismic mapping integrated with well analysis. Since our last update Petrel has completed further detailed technical programmes, including:
• The interpretation of 3D seismic data in the south-east part of Quad 35.
• Acoustic inversion of selected lines to assist in the assessment of the targeted reservoir sections.
• Detailed internal seismic mapping of two mounded Lower Cretaceous fan features in the Option 11/4 area.
• Detailed seismic mapping of the Eocene delta in Quad 35 (Option 11/4).
• Mapping of Lower Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary prospects within Quad 45 (Option 11/6).
• Progressed the seismic/sequence stratigraphic and provenance studies to characterise the depositional facies of the Lower Tertiary and Lower Cretaceous successions in the option blocks.
The recent work has firmed up a number of prospects, in both option areas. These are at both Lower Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary levels across the blocks.
David Horgan, Managing Director of Petrel, commented 'We have long believed that the offshore Porcupine Basin is a hydrocarbon province. This has been further supported by our recent work in identifying potential prospects on both of our blocks. The spudding of a well by Exxon Mobil in the nearby Dunquin prospect will add to the interest. We look forward to increased activities across the Basin which we believe has the potential to be a major new oil province. We have commenced our search for potential partners'.
PROSPECTS: OPTION AREA 11/06 (QUAD 45)
A significant Lower Cretaceous prospect has been mapped in Blocks 45/11 and 45/16, with a closed area of approximately 27 km2. Drill depths to this feature are up to 3,000 metres in approximately 1,000 m water depth. At shallower levels this feature is overlain by Lower Tertiary sand-prone sediments that provide a promising stacked second target. Further south in Block 45/16 a second potential prospect has been mapped in Lower Cretaceous sands that pinch out in a lobe up-dip eastwards within the block. The up-dip wedge within the block covering 80 km2. Lower Tertiary sands provide a promising shallower target.
There has been no drilling in this sector of the basin and hence there is no control on the nature of the potential reservoir sections. Nevertheless, given the thicknesses of the target sections seen on the seismic sections and the mapped areas under closure, the Option 11/6 prospects are capable of holding several hundred million barrels of in-place oil. Additional inversion work will be carried out on both prospects in these blocks. These features lie 35 km northeast and up-dip from the ExxonMobil group well currently being spudded on the Dunquin prospect in the Porcupine Basin.
PROSPECTS: OPTION AREA 11/04 (QUAD 35)
Eocene (Lower Tertiary) As a follow up to our previous work, seismic mapping has identified southward prograding Eocene clinoforms as potential targets. The Eocene deltaic sand bodies lie in an ideal position for the entrapment of northward migrating hydrocarbons, generated from mature Middle/Upper Jurassic source rocks. Recent seismic inversion lines have further helped us understand a number of sand-filled channels that represent potential stratigraphic targets. Interpretation of 3D data further east on the Eocene delta has revealed a number of promising sand sheets on the shelf slope with a potential for up-dip seal. Further inversion work is ongoing in this area to constrain the stratigraphic trapping potential. Drill depths to the top of the Eocene sand sequence are about 2,500 m subsea, in water depths of 700-800 m.
Lower Cretaceous: Further work has also gone into understanding the Lower Cretaceous play. A mounded feature was discovered within the Lower Cretaceous of Option Area 11/04 which displays internal stratigraphy and evidence of erosion prior to burial. Seismic inversion has shown alternations of sand-prone and mud-prone layers within the feature. Internal areas of 4-way closure up to 15 km2 in extent have been mapped as potential targets within the fan complex. The Cretaceous fan is here at a depth of about 4000 m subsea, with water depths of 800 m.
