      Travelin` Light
Alan Farnham and Rob Wherry, 02.02.04

Fed up with endless airport check-in lines and security delays? Skip them. Send your luggage on ahead.
Next time you fly, call Richard Altomare. He runs Universal Express, a New York City firm that will pick up your luggage before your trip (anywhere in the U.S. and at select locations abroad) and deliver it to your hotel before you arrive. This luxury costs as much as $90 a bag and requires a little advance planning, since the delivery takes one to five days. Definitely worth it. With no bags in tow you could bypass airport check-in lines and some major security hassles. No more waiting as a guard rummages through your underwear. " We want to return to when you could run through the airport," says Altomare.

Manhattan facial plastic surgeon David Rosenberg, 37, used a similar service, from another New York freight forwarder called Luggagefree, last July. " I`m a busy guy," he says. " I was traveling with my wife and two young kids to Beaver Creek, Colo. We had two large suitcases, a golf bag and a baby-jogger." He paid $300 one way for the load, which Luggagefree picked up four days before the family`s flight and wrapped for extra protection. When the Rosenbergs arrived at their hotel, their bags were there waiting, already unpacked by the concierge. " It`s not as big a self-indulgence as it seems," Rosenberg explains. " Not having bags allowed me to rent a smaller car."

FedEx offers a luggage service, too. Take your bags to a FedEx office to get tracking tags. For no extra cost you can get the packaging material needed, especially for golf clubs, skis and other outsize sports equipment. Four-day ground shipping of a 30-pound suitcase from New York to Los Angeles runs $21; standard overnight costs $96. Double the weight and ground shipping costs $35. FedEx notes that you should call your hotel first to make sure it will accept your bags before you arrive.

Internationally the logistics aren`t as easy. Some countries don`t allow cargo shipments with personal effects. Check the FedEx Web site for international shipping restrictions.

Four-year-old Sports Express in Durango, Colo. specializes in handling travelers with skis, snowboards, bikes and golf clubs. The company uses FedEx, DHL and UPS. It will ship a 32-pound bag overnight for $88 including pickup (packaging is up to the customer), about the same as FedEx. Its two- and three-day prices for the same bag are $76 and $57, respectively. Universal and the other luggage shippers have a lot of territory to conquer. Satish Jindel, a transportation analyst who consults for Universal, estimates that 300,000 bags a year are being sent ahead--1 in 1,600. But Altomare thinks he can greatly expand his volume, which ought to enable him to wrest deeper discounts from ground and air shippers and cut prices to get still more traffic. He may get some help from the airlines, which boost revenue by charging more for excess luggage. A cross-country economy flier on United, for example, now pays $80 for every bag over the two-bag allowance.

Luggage manufacturers are watching from the sidelines, thinking about redesigning bags to suit ship-ahead travelers. Wheels? You wouldn`t need them--not if someone else is doing the schlepping. But bag exteriors would have to be toughened up to withstand rougher handling. Already Hardigg Industries, a maker of specialized shipping containers, is working on a product, a consumer variant of its suitcase-size Stormcase used to ship weapons and scientific instruments. Suitcases might get bigger, too, since extra pounds don`t cost much for ground shipping. Hey, maybe it`s time to bring back the steamer trunk (see box).

Es gibt noch mehr Gedanken von mir zu diesem Thema:

USXP könnte die $525.000.000 als Steuer-Abschreibung verwenden, wie sie ja schon des öfteren betont haben. Also ein enormer Anreiz für z.B. FEDEX

      UNIVERSAL EXPRESS, INC.
      OTC BB:YSXO - .065

Recommended in July and once again as the SOM in November, USXP owns
and operates several subsidiaries, including Universal Express
Capital, Universal Express Logistics (including VirtualBellHop, World
Post, and Luggage Express) and the Private Postal Network. These
subsidiaries provide the private postal industry and consummers with
valued-added services and products, logistical services, equipment
leasing and cost-effectives delivery of good worldwide, USXP recently
acquired a portfolio of seasoned and performing commercial lease
receivables valued in excess of $3 mil, gross with servicing provided
by one of the top 50 banks in the US. USXP now has in place a
foundation for booking transations with leading national banks, The
company will be able to book these transactions in the future as an
asset, which will strengthen the balance sheet and improve operating
cash flow, giving them access to potential customers for tuture
      lease/financing volume.

USXP also announced that its subsidiary, The Virtual Bellhop, a
pioneer in baggage-free travel through sophisticated baggage movement
systems and software and arranges to pick-up luggage and any bags
that can be checked onto a flight and delivered to its end
destination or port, expanded its luggage free travel services to the
cruise industry. Crystal Cruises (parent company NYKof Japan – the
largest shipping company in the world), a multiple award winner of
the "World`s Best Large Ship Cruise Line", includes the only Caesars
Palace at Sea casino afloat and the popular Computer University@Sea,
offering 24-hours internet accesss. No matter where in the world the
cruise begins, the Virtual Bellhop service will pick up luggage for
those leaving on cruises and deliver it directly to the ship. In
addition, USXP acquired the successful and profitable Bags To Go,
Inc. (anticipate $4 mil, in annual revenues), a diversified logistics
provider in South Florida that also provides lost luggage delivery
services for major airlines and has experience dealing with the
intricacies of security concerns by the Transportation Security
Administration and the logistical concerns of airport operations,
which strengthens and greatly complements USXP`s (Luggage Express –
after a decade of experience they have not lost any luggage, not a
single bag!) luggage delivery business that advocates going to the
      airport carrying nothing.

"Isn`t there a better way?" As Congressman John Mica (R-FL) Chmn of
the House Subcommittee on Aviation muses does "TSA" (Transportation
Security Agency) really stand for "thousands standing around?"
Chmn/CEO Richard Altormare shows true entrepreneurialship when he
proposes revolutionizing how airline baggage is handled and shipped,
He is lobbying congressmen to make the change by separating airline
passengers and their luggage, enabling passengers to affordably ship
their luggage and bags ahead of time to their final destination, so
one way to cut down on the threat of error in the skies. "Try this as
a pilot program in a few airports in the country, Then I think you`d
find many saying. "OK, I`ll ship it ahead." Actually, it`s good for a
lot of jobs through the Postal Services, FedEx or UPS or others. And
when one looks at the amount of money, and the time and cost of
checking luggage, that`s a big cost in your airline flight and
obviously a lot of security at the airport," stated Virginia Senator
George Allen. The plan could save the government $1.4bil in baggage
screening costs and up to $6 bil in labor costs, while generating
billions of dollars in new revenue for the freight industry overall
and potentially a few hundred thousand new jobs.

Last month, subsidiary Universal Cash Express entered into a
strategic partnership agreement with Blackstone, a pioneer and
leading provider of electronic prepaid products and services.
Universal Cash Express products have an excellent reputation in the
marketplace and will be offered through thousands of points of
presense that Blackstone has in place with retail merchants
worldwide. Additionally, USXP will introduce co-branded Blackstone
terminals to thousands of private poster stores within the Universal
Express WorldPost network of merchants, with products offered from
the terminals, which will include a floral gift card from a major
floral association and the Universal Express Platinum Prepaid
      MasterCard/Debit Card program.

USXP continues its very aggressive acquisition program (one agreement
could increase `04 revenues to approx $200mil.)
      and is in ongoing
negotiation with two air courier services and also a strategic
acquisition that could double the size of newly acquired SCI
(anticipates $160 mil, in revenues). USXP is making headway in
tracing of funds with regards to the $500+ mil judgement and other
assets. Meanwhile, the stock after hitting .13 for 300%+ gains has
since pulled back into strong support in the .065 area where it is
establishing a new base to launch is next up-leg from. Our targets
remain the same and once the stock closes above .13 and starts to
chew up resistance at the .16 level we can expect to run to the .27
area. From there we could see an explosive upsurge to .65 and better.

Since the stock had an explosive upsurge through its five-year
downtrend line last year, the shorts were screaming that it was just
a short-term aberration. With strong entrepreneurial leadership and
an aggressive strategic acquisition program, you can understand the
comment we made in our last report that instead of betting on the
horse at the racetrack we will bet on the jockey. The shorts are
having a rough time, and if we are correct, they will be totally
      defeated.

Universal Express Sues North American Airlines for $160 Million

Jan 20, 2004 (financialwire.net via COMTEX) -- (FinancialWire) The proposed acquisition of North American Airlines by Universal Express (OTCBB: USXP) that came unwound abruptly on November 24 has led to a lawsuit for $160 million.

Universal Express has charged North American and its chairman and president, Dan McKinnon, with fraudulent concealment, breach of contract with respect to due diligence, breach of good faith, fair dealing and other matters.

The suit was filed in New York Supreme Court.

Universal Express recently terminated its coverage in Investrend Research`s unique and pioneering professional analyst program, which facilitates independent analysts to provide financial coverage for shareholders and investors in companies that otherwise would have little or no analyst following. Investrend Research analyst Jeff Howlett recently reiterated a "Speculative" rating on the company, a downgrade from the previous "Speculative Buy."

Investrend Research has committed, however, to self-underwriting the company`s coverage by Howlett through the next earnings report cycle.

The Dow Jones (NYSE: DJ) Newswires has stated that independent research has been growing in credibility over the past 18 months, specifically citing Investrend Research, and the New York Times (NYSE: NYT) has reported a survey by Charles Schwab & Co. (NYSE: SCH) reveals an astonishing 78 percent of active stockholders now "value research from independent firms over analysis by Wall Street firms with financial ties to the companies they are rating." A survey at Investopedia reveals that 74.7% of investors say that "legitimate fee-based research is objective and useful," and 70.9% say that a company that enrolls for "legitimate fee-based research is making a positive statement about its investment potential."
