      Breakthrough in Chinese Digital Education
Launching “Peking University e-Learner” with V-Dragon CPU

(26 August, 2003, Hong Kong) Culturecom Holdings Limited (“Culturecom”, stock code: 343) has been able to reap rewards for its dedication to the e-book movement in the past few years as the Company today announced in Beijing that its V-Dragon 1610 CPU has been adopted by “Peking University e-Learner”, an e-book launched by PKU School.com.

PKU School.com, an online education service network established by Affiliated High School of Peking University, will co-operate with Viewlink Technology Company Limited, a subsidiary of Foxlink Group which is an electronic manufacturing giant in Taiwan, and Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Limited from Japan to promote “Peking University e-Learner” to 1,200 schools within its network.

Since Culturecom introduced V-Dragon CPU in July, marking the launch of the world’s first single-chip system with an embedded Chinese characters generating engine, it has received enthusiastic responses from Chinese IT enterprises and manufacturers who are interested in opportunities to develop mass-market computer products. The birth of “Peking University e-Learner” is a significant milestone in the commercial success story of V-Dragon CPU in such a short period of time.

In conjunction with the announcement of “Peking University e-Learner”, a large IT symposium and trade fair was organized by Culturecom and its partners, which attracted over 350 distributors from various parts of China. This success has laid a solid foundation for the co-operation among Culturecom, Affiliated High School of Peking University, Viewlink Technology and Matsushita Electric to accelerate the development of digital education in China.

No Chinese software and Chinese character programme is required for “Peking University e-Learner” because it has already pre-installed Chinese characters genes that take up just 256K storing capacity, which is able to display over 32,000 Chinese characters instantly, either in Simplified or Traditional format. Thus, with its 16M Flash Memory Card, the e-book can store 4 to 8 million characters, which is equivalent to the total text volume of all subjects in one academic year for every student. Besides, it also supports internet download, voice recognition, MP3, DIY library service. Most important of all, it represents the fulfilment of “4As in internet learning”— ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANYONE, ANYTHING.

Starting from this academic year, “Peking University e-Learner”, pre-installed with teaching materials, will be gradually introduced nationwide to 1,200 schools under the umbrella of PKU School.com. This step is instrumental in encouraging other schools and students all over the country to adopt e-book as an essential learning tool, due to the status and influence of Affiliated High School of Peking University in the Chinese education sector. Closely related to Peking University, the affiliated high school enjoys an excellent reputation in training and academic excellence, thanks to its outstanding team of teaching professionals, many of whom are Peking University graduates.

Mr Frank W.T. Cheung, Chairman of Culturecom, is pleased with the latest development in e-book and V-Dragon CPU. “As early as 2000, Culturecom has already raised the concept of e-book and completed its research on design and production technology for e-book in the following year. In 2002, a trail program for the use of e-book in 10 mainland schools was launched. This year, the development of e-book is strengthened by the commercialisation of V-Dragon CPU. The launch of “Peking University e-Learner” shows that e-book has come of age and is all set to revolutionize the PRC education market. We will seize every business opportunity that comes with this trend”, he said.

As Culturecom believes that e-books will not only change people’s reading habits but revolutionize the education industry in China, the symposium is supported by the Chinese government which sent officials such as Mr. Zheng Minzheng, Director General of Electronics and Information Product Administration, the Ministry of Information Industry of PRC, Ms. Wang Zhuzhu, representative from e-learning division of the Ministry of Education of PRC, and Mr. Xie Huanzhong, the Director General of Information Technology of the Ministry of Education of PRC, to attend the event. Their participation is an indication of their interest and support for the future of “Peking University e-Learner” that will enable students to acquire knowledge without being hampered by time and place, thus opening up a new era for a mass education movement in China.
