Market Outlook (30 January 2004)
Market trend: We expect the SET will bounce back to the support level of 700-710 points with a trading level between 700 and 730 points. Net foreign and institution selling continue to dampen retail investors’ confidence. The BOT expects the impact of bird flu on GDP to be only 0.2%, the same level as the impact from SARS. The SET has already dropped by 6% within one week, which to a certain extent implies investors are overreacting, and thus we expect the market to bounce back soon.
Strategy: Selective buy on weakness at the SET’s support level, especially if there is panic selling. Stock selection should focus on non-financial companies that we expect to post good 4Q03 results.

BIRD FLU RESPONSE
Foreigners worry about virus
But they are keen on state enterprise IPOs
Nuntawun Polkuamdee
Bird flu took centre stage among institutional investors during the first roadshow of the year by the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
Representatives from the SET, the Finance Ministry, Bank of Thailand and top banks have been meeting with investors in Singapore, London and Boston throughout the week.
SET president Kittiratt Na Ranong said in a teleconference from London that the bird flu and its effect on the Thai economy were the main issues raised by investors at presentations.
Twenty-nine institutions attended the briefings, with over half already invested in the Thai market.
Mr Kittiratt said most investors expressed confidence that the government would be able to control the problem and that the impact on Thai economic growth would be slight.
He noted that Thailand and other Asian countries were able to post robust growth in 2003 even with the Sars outbreak strongly affecting tourism revenues in the second and third quarters.
Mr Kittiratt said investors also expressed interest in the listing plans of state enterprises, led by the Airports of Thailand and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand in the first half of the year.
``Foreign investors are all professionals. Short-term factors are not going to start a panic, and many are seeing this as a good time to buy,`` he said.
The SET was one of the best-performing stock markets in the world in 2003, with the main index up 116% from the previous year. But the market has taken a beating over the past month due to the avian influenza, with the index off 4% over the past month and 10% over the past two weeks.
Tuangrat Keetibutra, research manager at National Securities, said the bird flu and unrest in Thailand`s southern provinces would likely dampen investor sentiment over the next six months.
She noted that foreign investors had been net sellers of Thai stocks since the bird flu epidemic exploded last week, even though the impact so far was mostly on only the agribusiness and tourism industries.
She recommended that investors look for buying opportunities in the banking, building materials and steel sectors.
