      Good Morning, boys and girls.
      Welcome to Mr. Schrimp`s neighborhood.
Today we will learn about the "short squeeze".
To experience this in real life action, keep on shorting if you wish.
Press that spring as much as you can.
      Tick,tock,tick,tock,tick,tock........................

      Short Selling
Short selling is the selling of a security that the seller does not own, or any sale that is completed by the delivery of a security borrowed by the seller. Short selling is a legitimate trading strategy. Short sellers assume the risk that they will be able to buy the stock at a more favorable price than the price at which they sold short.
The Nasdaq Short Sale Rule prohibits NASD members from selling a Nasdaq National Market stock at or below the inside best bid when that price is lower than the previous inside best bid in that stock.

      www.fool.com/FoolFAQ/FoolFAQ0033.htm

      Short squeeze
A situation in which a lack of supply tends to force prices upward.

Why would you have to cover?

      For one of five reasons:

First, you may find yourself completely unable to sleep or concentrate on your work with this nightmare hanging over your head. (What if the stock hit 100 or 200 and you lost your life`s savings?) For the sake of your sanity, you are squeezed into buying in the borrowed shares to close your position. (And your buying itself pushes the stock a little higher, adding to the woes of others who, like you, have sold the stock short.)

Second, you may find that, while you are comfortable riding out the insanity, confident that this tree will not grow to the sky, your spouse does not share your view -- and is making your life intolerable. For the sake of your sanity, you are squeezed into buying in the borrowed shares to close your position. (And your buying itself pushes the stock a little higher, adding to the woes of others who, like you, have sold the stock short.)

Third, your broker may call and inform you that you have no choice: without an immediate infusion of fresh cash, you do not have enough assets in your account to support this short position, and it will be at least partially closed out whether you like it or not. (And your buying itself pushes the stock a little higher, adding to the woes of others who, like you, have sold the stock short.)

Fourth, some crafty folks who are long the stock may try to increase your pain by instructing their brokers to move their shares from their margin accounts to their cash accounts. When they do that, their broker can no longer lend their stock to shortsellers. And if you happen to be the shortseller who borrowed those particular shares, your broker may not be able to find new borrowable shares to replace them with. So he may call and tell you that you have been forced to buy the shares to return them to their rightful owners. (And your buying itself pushes the stock a little higher, adding to the woes of others who, like you, have sold the stock short.)

Finally, the first four reasons may have squeezed so many other shortsellers into buying stock to cover their shorts that now the stock is $95 and you are not $20,000 in the hole but $65,000, and suddenly reasons one or two or three, which had not applied to you before, now do.

      Till the next time.

Für alle, die noch lesen und verstehen können:

(ist nicht von und_WEG, doch von informierter Quelle)

SPD technology profile as of December 31 2003
      1) Automotive:
      — Setra buses (confirmed by various sources). This
breakthrough validated the performance of SPD technology and its reliability, its advantage over competition, its ability to meet industry standards, the manufacturability of SPD glass, its quality control and supply chain acceptability, and its cost-benefit ratio.
The Ernst Marti Bus that came off the D/C production line in May was the field-test vehicle for the SPD "TopSky" roof, and it proved so successful that by July, D/C was ready to start taking orders for the 20 Setra buses (confirmed on D/C media site).

      — Asahi Glass became a sublicensee. This is the pertinent
part of the press release: "Asahi Glass is the parent corporation of AP Technoglass and Glaverbel, SA, both of which are also existing licensees of Research Frontiers. Asahi Glass Company became authorized under sublicense from AP Technoglass, which is one of North America`s LEADING SUNROOF GLASS PRODUCERS (emphasis mine)."

      — Report out of South Korea about BMW order; translation
positive (unconfirmed; BMW Asia denial, but that may not be accurate, especially given Joe Harary`s quote below).

      — Volkswagen Passat (confirmed and installed by AGP).

      — Audi (rumor; Audi and Volkswagen have a business tie-in).

      — Mercedes Vision Grand Sports Tourer (unveiling next month in Detroit; source: just-auto.com; no confirmation of SPD use, but check out the site on the glass).

      — Bentley (experimenting with SPD).

      — Lotus Else (see Vision Ltd. under architectural windows
      below).

      — One claim that Cadillac is outfitting "1,800 units"
      (unconfirmed).

      — Finally, this beauty from Joe Harary: "With regard to
automotive applications, AP TECHNOGLASS, AGP, BRG, BOS
Automotive, Custom Glass, LTI, Kerros/IntelliTint, SPDi and others are ALREADY WORKING ON (emphasis mine) projects
with Bentley, BMW, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, GM, as well as other major Tier-1 automotive suppliers."

      2) Aircraft:
      — Boeing 7E7 (manufacture approval confirmed; IAS` Jim Lang confirms that his company "is continuing to work with Boeing," but SPD use unconfirmed; various media stories arguably point to SPD; announcement on interior details not expected fo 18 to 24 months).

      — News developing on Boeing 777-300ER with advanced window technology (no SPD confirmation, although much speculation; news story talks about electronically ontrolled windows; competition expected). This is a link to a video of the "enhanced lighting" and "electrically adjustable shades" being piloted on the 777, which has been mentioned as "pioneering" some of the systems planned for the 7E7. Scroll to the end of the article and select your video speed:
      http://www.boeing.com/commercial/777family/rollout/flt_test/…

      — Cessna Citation X (deliveries in 2004; report of SPD use
unconfirmed; Cessna Web site shows mechanical windows).
(und_WEG: watch out for Singapore fair)

      — 747-400 and 777-200 retrofits (unconfirmed).

      — Corporate jets and Bell helicopters (confirmed,
      IAS-installed).

      3) Architectural windows:
      — SPD-Smart windows are in Disney`s House of Inventions in
      Epcot Center (confirmed).

      — Wall Street Journal article of 11/13/03 on energy efficiency in new buildings and more stringent energy codes, all pointing to the new glass technology (in which SPD is clearly THE industry leader). There is a multitude of green building initiatives across the industrialized sector of the globe and in the "hot" regions.

      — The Freedonia Group has predicted that smart windows will be the fastest growing sector of the glass industry, growing at approximately 20% per year compared to 2.5% growth for the glass industry in general (source, Joe Harary).

      — "At this year`s "100% Detail" exhibition, Vision (Environmental Innovation) Ltd. showcased the first-ever UK launch of SPD-Smart technology, which allows users to control or "tune" the amount of light, glare and heat that passes through glass or plastic. ... This was a very successful trade show for us, and we received hundreds of serious inquiries from architects, designers, specifiers, consultants and other key people in industry, as well as media attention." (Source: Bob Hudson, president.)

      — SPD Systems sold and delivered a skylight to a
      Pennsylvania residence (confirmed).

      — Reports of MIT interest in the New York skyline. Again, no direct reference to SPD, but it`s certainly centered on evolving window technology, of which SPD is THE leader. May be an academic project at this time.

      — ROLOX test-marketing SPD in the Ozarks (confirmed by
      outside inquiry).

      — Roy Zeluck of Zeluck Inc. told me in an e-mail that while his firm hasn`t sold any SPD products to date, he has "4-5 jobs that I am awaiting decisions on." In a subsequent phone call, the company confirmed no sales but that it is pushing ahead. "It`s just a matter of time." He`s very impressed with the technology but not the price.

      4) Yachts:
      — InspecTech joined forces with Cable Marine Inc. (confirmed by press release).

      — Alex Martinez reports SPD glass installed on yacht.

      5) Production:
      — Glaverbel, Isoclima and St. Gobain are either in active
product-development stages or in actual manufacture (confirmed by news reports, press releases and/or in e-mail to me).

      — Hankuk-SPDi supplying licensees (confirmed by news
      reports and press releases).

      — Laminated Technologies is laminating and warehousing
film purchased from SPDi (confirmed to me by LT).

      — Razor`s Edge is selling and installing SPD products
(confirmed to me by Razor`s Edge).

      6) Expansion:
      — News articles and press releases point to expansion of
SPD into Japan, Russia and China, vast and lucrative markets, all three.

      — Japan (through Asahi, Dainippon and Hitachi) appears to be the first country of the three for SPD growth. Russia, despite the racial slurs (mafia and vodka) on the Yahoo message board, can indeed be a productive market for SPD products, including imported cars. China at this point may be a long shot, but the dynamics of its economy are positive.

      7) Insider buying:
      — The greatest indication of great things to come.
      — A Web site devoted to investments based on insider trading touts REFR.

      8) Brasher/short reaction:
      — The increased volume of brasher/short postings and their
stridency tells me that they, too, are aware of RFI and SPD developments. Their urgency matches the momentum that can be seen in the above items.

      9) Media exposure
      — SPD-Smart windows were featured in Popular Science
magazine`s Smart Garage, which toured the country this
summer. This event and the related print and online promotions for it were seen by more than an estimated 58 million people (source, Joe Harary).

      — Forbes article by Emily Lambert was not just an unethical hatchet job; there was something more to it. A reputable magazine fact-checks such a story before publication. Although I`m not a conspiracy theorist, I refer you back to "brasher/short reaction" just above. At the very least, Joe Harary got in a few cents` worth in a subsequent issue, including this very important statement: "We have over 400 patents and patent applications, licensed to 27 companies (now 28), including two of the world`s largest glass companies (Asahi and Saint-Gobain) and some of the world`s largest film and chemical companies (Air Products, Dainippon and Hitachi)."
