DENVER (Dow Jones)--Talk of a possible U.S. Senate vote next week on an energy bill that contains tax credits for alternative fuel sources sent stocks in the sector higher on Friday.
FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCEL), Danbury, Conn., a maker of fuel cell technology for power plants, led the rally. Shares hit a 52-week high of $19.59, topping the previous high of $17.89 set on Tuesday.
FuelCell shares ended the day up $3.46, or 21.7%, to $19.44 on Nasdaq volume of 4.9 million, compared with average daily volume of 699,690.
" Lobbyists in D.C. are indicating that a (Senate) vote on scaled-back tax credits will happen mid-week next week, which would be positive for the (alternative fuel) industry," said Jarett Carson, analyst with RBC Capital Markets in Austin, Texas. " I think you`re seeing some people today getting a running start."
Talk circulating " under the radar" about a major announcement in California next week regarding government plans for building infrastructure for hydrogen fuel use may also be sending alternative fuel stocks higher, Carson said.
Carson owns no shares in FuelCell or other companies in the sector, and his company hasn`t done any investment banking with those companies in the last 12 months.
Also making the rounds on Friday were rumors that a California professor`s prediction about a major earthquake there sent alternative fuel stocks higher.
" Among the smart hedge fund crowd, many were laughing at that - I think that went around as a joke," Carson said. " First of all, if I thought California was going off a cliff, I wouldn`t think that would be good for the markets in general."
Executives at the companies that experienced a big price spike on Friday thought the pending energy bill vote was at least part of the reason behind the price move.
" We`ve heard rumblings about good news in the legislature," said Steve Eschbach, certified financial analyst for FuelCell. " I think it`s part of a confluence of events signaling that fuel cells should be part of the economy going forward."
Gary Brandt, chief financial officer at Hydrogenics Corp. (HYGS), a Toronto company working to commercialize hydrogen and fuel cell technology, said: " I don`t really have any specifics, but we`ve heard that the alternative fuel aspects of the energy bill are being separated out and have a better chance of going through."
Shares in Hydrogenics ended the day up 31 cents, or nearly 6%, to $5.63 on Nasdaq volume of 615,650, compared with average daily volume of 437,700.
Congress returns from a holiday recess next week, but some beltway insiders have said that it will be difficult for Congress to get any major bills passed this session because of the increasing hostility between the parties.
