Hey Ben Lechef,

Info zu XOMA vom 01.03.2000
Sutro & Co. Doubles Xoma Target To $30, Maintains At Buy (XOMA)
(NewsTraders.com)--Sutro & Co. analyst Eugene Melnitchenko doubled his price objective on Xoma Ltd. (XOMA) today to $30 from $15, pointing to the company`s broad biotechnology platforms.
Melnitchenko, who continues to rate Xoma at "buy," also called attention to the company`s strong research and marketing partners, which include Allergan (AGN), Baxter (BAX) and Genentech (DNA), adding that a potential fourth partner may join Xoma on its antifungal Mycoprex project.
Turning to finances, Melnitchenko feels Xoma is in good condition with enough cash to fund its programs over the next two years, although, according to the analyst, Xoma`s partners will be paying for the clinical trials of most of its new products.
Melnitchenko sees some of Xoma`s new offerings being commercialized within the next three years.

UK biotechs rise after investor meet, U.S. =2
Fri Mar 03 06:42:00 EST 2000
Cantab`s American Depository Receipts have risen from around $10 on February 11 to close at $30-1/2 on Thursday. During the same period its London-listed shares have risen from 218 pence to 730 pence.
"There was some switching yesterday in the U.S. from big to small and medium-sized biotech firms and both Cantab and Xenova have been beneficiaries," said one analyst. Several fund managers in the U.S. have been picking up select biotech stocks in Europe which have been found short of U.S. valuations despite being involved in similiar therapeutic areas.
Its been a similiar story with Xenova, whose ADRs were valued at around a dollar on February 7 but closed on Thursday at over $5.
Xenova is also expected to reveal further progress on its cancer-based products on Tuesday when it announces its annual results.
Among the companies that presented at the Charterhouse meeting on Thursday was French genomics company Genset SA, up three euros to 195 euros on the Nouveau Marche stock exchange. Cerep, a combinatorial chemistry company, shares rose three EUR to 106, gene therapy company Transgene, gained 50 cents to 95.50 EUR and Nicox rose 7.45 EUR to 90.95.

Drug stock triage
Scavenger Hunt 03/08/00 2:30 PM
By Kevin Pilot
Joseph P. Kennedy is said to have sold all his stock holdings in 1929, right before the great crash, when his shoeshine boy began to talk up one of Kennedy`s largest stock holdings. Listen up at the next barbeque, PTA meeting, or cocktail party (if there is such a thing anymore) you attend. More talk about DSL than the NBA? Soccer moms trading IPO tips instead of recipes? Did your next door neighbor quit his day job and take up day trading?
Never have so many been so interested in stocks -- more specifically, interested in so few stocks. Really, the market as we know it isn`t the 5000 stocks in the Russell 2000 index, or even the 500 stock in the S&P 500, but rather the 50 or so CNBC has enough air time to cover in a given day.
Old glory
Which brings us to drug stocks. These were the Internet stocks of the 1970s, just as biotech was for the 1980s. The population was aging, new drugs held tremendous promise for decades to come in terms of treatment and profitability, and while expensive, they were worth any price given their huge potential. Things went pretty well, up until recently.
Large pharmaceuticals hummed along at 20-30% earnings growth for most of the past two decades, until investors woke up one morning last week and discovered that most major drug companies had been cut in half, and were sporting valuations not seen since Clinton`s health reform push.
In a nutshell, they got broadsided by dot-com fever. While money has long been flowing from value stocks into technology, non-tech growth stocks have generally held their own until now. In fact, the pharmaceutical industry is still expected to grow at 23% or better for the next decade, but most of the stocks sell for less than the average P/E of the S&P 500. Here`s what I mean:
Company Yield P/E*
American Home Products 2.22% 18.6
Eli Lilly 1.91% 18.2
Glaxo Wellcome 2.84% 24.1
Merck 2.15% 17.7
Pfizer 1.20% 24.4
Pharmacia Upjohn 2.25% 18.3
Schering Plough 1.64% 16.0
SmithKline Beecham 2.73% 21.6
Bristol Myers Squibb 2.25% 16.4
*based on 2001 earnings estimates
Most of these companies are currently trading with P/E ratios well below their growth rate, a good sign if you believe in PEG (price-to-earnings-growth) ratios. But it gets better. Notice how some pharmaceuticals trade well above their peers? These are the companies which Wall Street has projected will have much stronger growth in the next five years than the others.
The problem with drug companies is that the pipeline of new products is extremely unpredictable. What looks like a blockbuster drug can crash and burn in clinical trials, while a little-noticed drug might have a new application and move from the minor leagues to the majors in a moment. Pharmaceutical companies either spread their risk by developing a lot of drugs, or simply buying a pipeline.
New glory
Take the biotech boom of the last decade. I remember the hype; talk of companies like Genentech (DNA) and Amgen (AMGN) taking the place of Merck (MRK) and Glaxo (GLX), smaller companies making their shareholders rich by developing a cure for cancer. Hundreds of millions went into biotech startups and they burned through it, most without living up to their promise.
Major drug companies took it in stride, developing limited biotech research operations, but mostly waiting and watching. Even small biotechs that had successes discovered they needed distribution, and those that burned through their money ended up selling their pipeline for pennies on the dollar to the major drug companies. In the end, only a few leading biotechs were left standing, and only one, Amgen, has really even come close to being a player.
Strength in size
The point? Size, positioning, and distribution are advantages major pharmaceutical companies can exploit. Biotechs are once again hot, and I imagine this can only benefit drug makers much as it did a decade ago. While Merck might not have a hot drug right now, the odds are in the next two years it will, and multiples will expand. The same is true for other compelling values like American Home Products (AHP), Eli Lilly (LLY), Schering Plough (SGP), and Bristol Myers (BMY).
The industry`s long-term outlook is perhaps even brighter than ever, given new developments in biotechnology and genetics, which could lead to even more pharmaceutical applications. And best of all, in the event of an economic downturn, major drug companies have historically been recession-proof, especially when purchased at valuations like these. After all, people will be quicker to give up their online shopping than their medication

(GB Aktie) und 890282 (US ADRs) zustande?

"XNVA-XR9576 will soon be entering the final phase clinical trails.Xenova reckons 1 million patients will benefit from XR9576,making forcasts of $1 billon ayear look plausable.
Another drug it has in development is a possible cancer cure and the company dare not talk about it.
This company will hit the big time soon and will soon reflect in the share price.
I rate this stock as a strong buy"

Hi XENOVA-Gemeinde,

U.S. blue chips steady though biotechs hurting
Tue Mar 14 13:58:00 EST 2000
(Updates to early afternoon)
By Jennifer Westhoven
NEW YORK, March 14 (Reuters) - U.S. technology stocks
traded moderately lower early Tuesday afternoon amid selling,
especially in the biotechnology sector, while blue-chip shares
rose slightly. The technology selloff that began Monday, plus
worries about economic data later this week and next week`s Fed
meeting, unraveled a solid rally under way earlier Tuesday in
both Nasdaq and Dow stocks.
The Nasdaq composite index was down 41 points, or 0.85
percent, at 4,865 after giving up an early gain of 106 points.
The losses followed Monday`s trouncing, when the index was hit
with its fourth-biggest point loss ever. The Nasdaq is now off
3.93 percent from its closing high of 5,048.62 on Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 6 points, or
0.06 percent at 9,952. Earlier, the index had been up by as
much as 96 points. The Standard & Poor`s 500 Index was down 2
points at 1,381.
"We have a couple of numbers ahead of us and you don`t want
to be blind-sided by any of these events," said Joseph Barthel,
chief investment strategist of Fahnestock & Co. in Great Neck,
N.Y. "So you can expect a contraction in volume as people pull
in their horns."
On Thursday and Friday, Wall Street will get economic
reports on prices at the wholesale and retail level, which
could provide clues to the inflationary picture and the future
direction of interest rates.
On Tuesday of next week, the Federal Reserve`s
interest-rate-setting policy group meets and Wall Street is
betting on a 25-basis-point increase in the federal funds rate.
And on March 27, the world`s eyes will be on Vienna, where the
oil cartel, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries,
is due to meet to decide on future production levels.
Biotechnology stocks were down but off their lows. Human
Genome lost 18-3/16 to 134-3/8, Incyte Pharmaceuticals
fell 46 to 151 and AriadPharmaceuticals Inc.
slipped 3-3/4 to 21-11/16/
However, American Express Co. , one of the 30 stocks
in the Dow average, jumped 5 to 131-6/16. The financial
services company will provide electronic payment services to a
Web-based corporate marketplace being set up by Dell Computer
Corp. and e-commerce company Ariba Inc.
Dell shares rose 2-1/2 to 57-1/4 in heavy Nasdaq trading
and earlier touched a new 52-week high of 57-7/8. Ariba
dropped 1/4 to 297-3/4.
Oracle Corp. rose 2 to 80-3/4. The database
software company said it would team up with Cable & Wireless
HKT of Hong Kong to launch a Web-based electronic
marketplace in China.
Oracle is also due to report its earnings after the close,
with analysts expecting profits of 13 cents a share, compared
with 10 cents in the year-ago period, according to First
Call/Thomson Financial.
Dow component Alcoa Inc. , the world`s largest
aluminum company, stumbled 4-7/8 to 63-3/16 after it agreed to
buy aerospace industry supplier Cordant Technologies Inc.
, in a $2.9 billion deal. Cordant was up 25-3/4 to
55-5/16.
In economic news, February retail sales showed an increase
of 1.1 percent, compared with the 1.0 percent gain expected by
economists polled by Reuters. Excluding autos, retail sales
rose 1 percent, compared with an anticipated gain of just 0.6
percent.
The numbers calmed fears that the Federal Reserve might
aggressively raise interest rates when it meets next Tuesday.
The Fed has increased rates four times since last June.
The 30-year U.S. Treasury bond moved higher, with the price
up 21/32 and the yield, which moves in the opposite direction,
slipping to 6.12 percent from Monday`s close of 6.17 percent.
"This market looks treacherous and choppy for a while,"
Barthel said. "April in Paris is really where you want to be.
Go and fall in love and forget this."

Was steckt hinter Xenova
Hi Xenova-Gemeinde,

"But it admits to having sold Tepnel Life Sciences too early after a loss of patience and has been disappointed by ERA Group, although it continues to ‘hold for the long-term’. Xenova, its only biotech stock, has yet to realise its full potential."

`Abwärtstrend hält an!`

Weiß jemend was neues über XNVA?

Konsequenz : der Biotechsektor in US hoch Xenova stagniert.
Xenova signs research agreement with Brunel University
Xenova Group plc has signed a two-year collaborative research agreement for the discovery and development of novel classes of telomerase inhibitors with Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK.
The collaboration with Brunel University aims to identify a mechanism by which telomerase expression could be inactivated in cancer cells, effectively provoking cancer cell death.
Xenova and Brunel will work together to develop novel assays, which target telomerase and telomerase-associated proteins, and will evaluate active small molecule compounds and drug leads with the goal of developing new drug candidates for clinical evaluation.
Professor Robert Newbold, Director of Brunel`s Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics, said: "I am delighted with the collaboration with Xenova and the potential it offers. Recent research has shown that controlling the activity of telomerase can potentially stop human cancer cell growth, and Xenova`s cancer drug discovery expertise when allied with Brunel`s research capabilities will provide us with an exciting development project."
David A Oxlade, Xenova`s CEO, welcomed this latest agreement, saying: "Professor Newbold and his team have recently achieved significant advances in the understanding of how telomerase works in cancer and how telomerase is itself controlled. Working with Professor Newbold and his team will provide Xenova with exclusive access to their leading edge research in telomerase."
In addition to XR9576 and XR5000, Xenova is also currently undertaking cancer research projects targeting MRP-related multi-drug resistance, next generation topoisomerase inhibitors, the potential of P- gp in oral drug delivery and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1). Xenova has a drug development agreement with Eli Lilly, based on small molecule inhibitors of PAI-1, to develop novel antithrombotic drugs for chronic use.

Hier ein kurzer Aufsatz was die US Food and Drug Behörde (entspricht unserem Bundesgesundheitsamt) darunter versteht.
The Clinical Trial Process
The drug approval process starts in the laboratory. After discovering a promising compound, studies using the compound in cell cultures, isolated tissues, and laboratory animals are conducted. This gives researchers a pretty good idea of what to expect in human trials. On average, only one compound in a thousand will actually make it to human testing. Assuming the data is promising, the company makes the decision whether to begin the long and costly process of getting the compound to market. Since most drug companies have multiple candidates, the company must take into account the size of the potential patient population, whether the market for that particular drug is already well-served, and the company`s financial situation. Also, the patent protection for the drug, generally lasting 17 years, begins to tick once the compound begins pre-clinical trials. The pre-clinical trials for most drugs average about five years.
Assuming the company decides to pursue human studies, it must first submit an Investigational New Drug application to the FDA for approval. The IND becomes effective 30 days after receipt by the FDA (assuming the FDA does not require further information), and must be filed annually thereafter until the completion of clinical testing. The IND must provide pre-clinical data of sufficient quality to justify the testing of the drug in humans. About 85% of all IND applications move on to begin clinical trials. Assuming the company receives FDA go-ahead, the company will move the drug on to Phase 1 testing in human subjects. At this point, the compound has a one in five chance of eventually reaching the market, and will normally take another five to nine years to reach that destination.
Phase 1
Phase 1 trials concentrate on developing the drug`s safety profile. The human subjects in the study are normally healthy volunteers, though sometimes patients who have terminal illnesses and have no other therapeutic alternative will take part in Phase 1 studies as well. The sample is normally not more than 100 patients in Phase 1. The basic goal of Phase 1 is to determine how the drug is absorbed, distributed in the body, metabolized, and excreted. The duration of the drug`s effects are also measured. Phase 1 testing ranges from one to three years, on average.
Assuming the data from Phase 1 are positive and the safety of the compound is established, the drug moves on to Phase 2 testing. If the company moves on to begin Phase 2 trials, the drug`s chance of eventually making it to market improves to just under 30%.
Phase 2
Phase 2 trials consist of small, well-controlled experiments to continue to evaluate the drug`s safety and assess side effects. The drugs are given to volunteers (usually between 100 and 300 patients) who actually suffer from the disease or condition being targeted by the drug. This phase is where the optimal dosage of the drug is established. Also, statistical end points are established for the drug that represent the targeted favorable outcome of the study. The current standard of care for the medical condition can be used as a benchmark in setting the end point. Phase 2 trials last an average of two years.
A drug that moves on to begin Phase 3 testing has about a 60% chance of actually being approved by the FDA.
Phase 3
Phase 3 testing is intended to verify the effectiveness of the drug against the condition that it targets, based on the statistical end points established in Phase 2. The study also continues to build the safety profile of the drug and record possible side effects and adverse reactions resulting from long-term use. Phase 3 studies are tightly controlled, double-blind studies with a sample size of at least 1000 patients. If the drug proves to be effective in this stage, the trial is deemed successful (pivotal). Normally two pivotal trials are required to ensure the validity of the studies, although if the results are extremely strong, one may suffice. Phase 3 testing averages between three and four years.
Assuming the drug reaches the desirable end point in Phase 3 trials, the company will then file a New Drug Application, which can contain 100,000 pages of data supporting the efficacy and safety of the drug. At this point, the drug has better than a 70% chance of being approved by the FDA.
Approval of the NDA can take anywhere from two months to an extreme of several years (in the case that the FDA requests additional information), with an average wait of between 18 and 24 months. Upon approval, the company may begin to market and distribute the drug.
Phase 4
Once the drug is on the market, the company must continue to perform observational studies in an ongoing evaluation of the drug`s safety during routine use. The company also attempts to monitor any usage of the drug for conditions other than the approved medical indication. If the drug is being successfully used for off-label indications, the company will often initiate further clinical trials for those indications in order to widen the potential market for the drug. The company cannot advertise or endorse off-market use of the drug, however.

U.S.. At least the UK has some comprehenison of its value. We IPO Biotechs that basically
have nothing going for them that go up to 75 and 100 dollars in its first day. Please tell me if I am missing something. Do people need a brick to hit them in the head to realize what we have here. I wouldn`t mind all of this if I had any money left to buy more of this stock at these cheap prices, but I am out of money. And the craziness of all of this blows my mind.
I won`t sell my shares cheap when the public wakes up to this coming miracle, $45 or nothing less. Then I will only sell a tiny bit, just for play around money. This should be worth at least $400 after mid 2000 when Phase III is over and successiful. I can`t watch this for a while, it is pure craziness.

Week in Review
April 3-7, 2000
The market`s wild ride continued this week, with volatility culminating in a death plunge half-way through trading Tuesday. The battle between the Old vs. New economy stocks ceased momentarily as both were swept up in a general downturn that sent investors racing to dump shares or cover margin calls. At their lows on Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 504 points (4.5%) and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 574 points (13.6%). The Nasdaq Composite moved into official Bear Market territory (a drop of more than 20% from its high), having lost 28.9% from the high achieved in early March. Biotech stocks, already in decline, continued to slide. At their lowest point on Tuesday, the Nasdaq Biotech Index and Amex Biotech Index were down 44% and 48%, respectively, from their early March highs.
Relief came Wednesday when President Clinton clarified the joint statement made with Prime Minister Tony Blair on March 14 supporting free public access to genomic sequencing information. Clinton reassured the industry that commercial gene discoveries could be patented. The languishing sector received a second boost on Thursday with Celera (CRA) announcing that its researchers had completed the sequencing phase of the genome from one human being. The company is now on track to complete the assembly and annotation of the human genome later this year. This news gave investors reason to celebrate and drive up the shares of Celera 45% for the week. The rest of the biotech sector came along for the ride, effectively reclaiming the previous week`s losses. The Nasdaq Biotech Index finished the week up 2.6%, and the Amex Biotech Index finished 8.7% higher.
The IPO scorecard this week gave further evidence that the window of opportunity for biotech companies to raise money could be closing.
