Microsemi and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Team Up for Advanced LED TV
      updated 8:30 a.m. ET May 20, 2008

IRVINE, Calif., May 20, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading manufacturer of high performance analog mixed signal integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors, and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), a major global manufacturer of LCD TV display panels, have partnered in the design of an advanced TV backlit with RGB (red/green/blue) LEDs. This system will be on display at the 2008 Society for Information Display Conference in Los Angeles, May 20-22.

CMO has designed a high performance large screen TV utilizing advanced LED drivers based on Microsemi's Digital Advanced Zone Lighting(tm) technology. This TV supports the scanning backlight mode for backlight LEDs (1-D) and the more sophisticated zone dimming mode (2-D) as well. The scanning backlight mode significantly reduces motion blur phenomena. The zone dimming mode, in addition to reducing motion blur, offers substantial enhancement of the contrast ratio and also provides vastly reduced power consumption.

Microsemi's advanced lighting technology, DAZL!(tm), includes a family of LED drivers both for high and low power LEDs. These drivers, designed in a high voltage mixed signal technology, greatly reduce the number of external components needed to build an LED backlight system, while offering advanced capabilities such as zone dimming. They can be used with either RGB or white LEDs.

      Topmeldung:

China's LED Industry is Roses All the Way
SHENZHEN, May 20, 2008 (SinoCast via COMTEX) --

Development of LED technologies has been listed as one of the most important national projects by China in the coming five years, according to Wu Ling, director of the National Semiconductor Lighting Department of the Ministry of Science.

China's LED industry is growing rapidly. At the last account, China's LED display market recorded total sales of CNY 7.2 billion in 2007, representing an increase of 44% from CNY 5 billion in 2006.

Last year the LED chip industry of the country scored a capacity of CNY 1.5 billion, up 43% from CNY 1.05 billion one year ago. The market capacity of LED packaging industry in China reached CNY 16.8 billion in 2007, up 15% in comparison with CNY 14.8 billion in 2006.

Production output of LED increased 24% to 82 billion pieces by the end of 2007 from 66 billion in 2006. High power LED production output hit CNY 12 billion, accounting for 71% of the total LED market.

China became the biggest producer and exporter of LED displays and solar LED decorative lights last year, with a total market value of CNY 30 billion.

As the largest lighting and lamps maker in the world, China's lighting manufacturing industry saw total sales of CNY 160 billion in 2006. However, its products were mainly focused on low- and mid-end markets, accounting for merely 18% of the global market.

The Chinese government now is standing firmly behind Chinese lighting products makers. This country so far has set up five national LED production bases in Shanghai, Xiamen, Dalian, Nanchang, and Shenzhen. And it has turned out to be the number one LED packaging production base in the world.

Mr. Wu says that China at the moment has the ability to take a toehold in the high-end market, but it has to spend heavily in innovation, research and development, as well as boosting the brand recognition in the international markets.

A working group was formed in August 2007, which is aimed to set up national LED technology standards. Lately the National Lighting Standardization Association has come up with ten LED standards, which now are under scrutiny.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a display and lighting technology used in almost every electrical and electronic product on the market, from a tiny on/off light to digital readouts, flashlights, traffic lights and perimeter lighting. LEDs are also used as the light source in multimode fibers, optical mice and laser-class printers.

Epistar Acquires One More LED Customer

      2008/05/19
Taipei, May 19, 2008 (CENS)--Epistar Corp., Taiwan`s No.1 LED maker, recently signed up one more customer for its light emitting diodes (LEDs), increasing the total number of its international customers to three.

After receiving OEM contracts from Toyoda Gosei and Osram, Epistar has recently won orders from a new buyer in Asia, which will help boost the company`s shipments beginning in the third quarter.

Becoming a contract supplier of Osram and Toyoda Gosei, Epistar has acquired licenses from the two LED heavyweights, allowing its products to go most of the world. Industry watchers pointed out that Taiwanese brand-name suppliers of notebook computers like Asustek and Acer usually use Epistar`s own-brand LED chips as backlights in their computers when they ship their products to Taiwan and mainland China. Multinational suppliers like Dell and HP or Taiwanese brand-name suppliers targeting European, North American and Japanese markets tend to use licensed chips, and Epistar is always their choice.

Epistar executives estimated that LED penetration in notebook computers would reach a higher-than-expected level of 20% in the second half this year, mostly thanks to top-view backlight methodology, which delivers higher yield rate than does side-view methodology and higher illumination. Epistar is now the exclusive supplier of top-view technology.

Epistar`s blue-LED brightness intensity has reached millicandela (mcd), making the company the only Taiwanese LED chipmaker to supply the emitters boasting that much of intensity. The high-end emitters give the company high chance to supply the chips to Asustek`s next-generation Eee PC and high-end notebook computers from international big-name suppliers.

Epistar has begun shipping the high-end chips this month and will ramp up the shipments in the third quarter.

The company has received NT$1.1 billion (US$36 million at US$1:NT$30) worth of orders so far this month for its high-power chips and chips for notebook backlights.

The company will boost output of blue LEDs to 1.4 billion units in the third quarter from current 1.1 billion to keep up with surging demand in the back-school shopping season.

Epistar is now the world`s biggest supplier of four-element LED chips, turning out 1.6 billion chips a month. In the third quarter, the company`s combined output of blue LEDs and green LEDs will reach 1.4 billion chips a month, becoming the world`s No.3 supplier of LED chips.

Major shareholders of Epistar are Untied Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd. and Wan Hai Lines. While many of Epistar`s international rivals have branched into the LED packaging sector, Epistar remains firmly clung to chip making.

Some LED players recovering better than others in 2Q

Siu Han, Taipei; Yvonne Yu, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 20 May 2008]

While the LED market is recovering in the second quarter, some makers have benefited more than others, though market watchers expect more players in the industry to see an improved sales performance in May. According to compiled sales reports from players in Taiwan's LED industry, overall revenues for Taiwan LED companies totaled NT$6.1 billion in April, up 4.4% compared to March and up 18% on year.

However, results were mixed, as some companies including Epistar and I-Chiun Precision Industry reported record monthly revenues in April, while other companies saw sequential revenue declines for the month. Epistar had revenues of NT$1.1 billion, up 23% on year, while I-Chiun had revenues of NT$326 million, up 61% on year.

For upstream LED chipmakers, total revenues for Taiwan makers totaled NT$2.81 billion in April, up 11% on month. Epistar led the way, with the company receiving rush orders at the end of the month for LEDs used in backlighting for 7- to 10-inch LCD panels, as well as for Christmas light and flashlight applications. Other companies including Formosa Epitaxy and New Century Infocomm performed well in April, the market watchers noted.

For downstream packaging players, Everlight had revenues of NT$945 million, while Lite-on Technology had LED sales of NT$928 million. However, second-tier companies totaled revenues of about NT$3.28 billion in April, down 1.25% from the previous month.

According to industry watchers though, LED market demand has continued to recover in May and more companies are expected to report improved sales this month. Epistar estimates its orders for May will reach NT$1.1 billion on new orders for notebook applications.

With LED leadframe prices currently rising 10-15%, I-Chiun's monthly revenues should see a related increase, industry watchers noted. In additon, demand for high power and AlGaInP LEDs is recovering, the industry watchers pointed out.

However, Formosa Epitaxy indicated that orders for side-view LED applications from international handset makers this quarter is not as strong as expected, with order visibility not very high. The company also noted that demand in the second quarter is not as strong as it was last year during the same period, though the company stated that its second quarter revenues should increase 10% from the first quarter

      Nachkaufgelegenheit?
