00:35 23Jul2004 UPDATE 1-Air Canada seeks C$220 million in WestJet lawsuit

      (Adds WestJet counter-claim)
MONTREAL, July 22 (Reuters) - Air Canada <AC.TO> said on Thursday it had amended its corporate spying lawsuit against arch-rival WestJet Airlines Ltd. <WJA.TO> and was seeking C$220 million ($167 million) in damages from the discount carrier.
Air Canada had earlier sought C$5 million in the case, in which the two airlines have traded accusations of corporate espionage.
In its amended claim, filed in Ontario Superior Court, Air Canada alleges WestJet improperly logged on to an internal employee Web site at Air Canada nearly 250,000 times over 12 months and created automated technology to download and analyze passenger load and booking information.
"As a result, WestJet acquired a competitive advantage by obtaining access to the number of passengers booked on any flight on any route Air Canada flies anywhere in the world, for up to a year into the future," Air Canada said in a statement.
Calgary-based WestJet, which denies the accusations, filed its own counterclaim seeking damages for the unlawful seizure of WestJet`s confidential financial information.
In a statement on Thursday, WestJet said a court had granted the go-ahead for its counter-claim that Air Canada and its private investigators had taken confidential documents from the garbage of former executive Mark Hill.
Hill, a WestJet co-founder, resigned last week as vice-president of strategic planning at the no frills airline.
Air Canada filed its original claim in early April. Its amended claim seeks C$170 million in compensation, C$25 million in punitive damages and C$25 million for what it said was WestJet`s intentional destruction of documents.
WestJet did not give a dollar figure for the damages it is seeking.
