Infospace CEO talks up a storm
      By Sarah Lai Stirland
      Redherring.com, March 08, 2000

NEW YORK -- Forget the "online" world. The real money is in using wireless devices to tap into the physical world. Naveen Jain, the founder, CEO, and chairman of Infospace.com (Nasdaq: INSP), seems to have succeeded in convincing investors that billions can be made by creating a business to take the boredom out of everyday chores.

Of course, charisma sells, and Mr. Jain, the P.T. Barnum of the wireless world, possesses buckets of it. On Tuesday, Mr. Jain acted both as an evangelist and entertainer to a Wall Street crowd here at the PaineWebber (NYSE: PWJ) Internet conference as he described his plans to grow Infospace into a cash cow.

Mr. Jain spent much of his time dismissing what people have traditionally thought of as "Internet" companies.

"Today, $3.7 trillion`s worth of transactions are done through the local merchants in the offline world," notes Mr. Jain. "Two-thirds of the GDP (gross domestic product) in this country comes from the service merchants -- merchants like dry cleaners and plumbers -- and these people are exactly the type of merchants who cannot take advantage of the Internet today. How do you sell dry cleaning on the Internet? What these service-based merchants need today is a way to drive retail traffic to their stores, and that`s exactly what Infospace does."

      JAIN`S GAME
Infospace is best known for providing directory information and other data, such as financial information, to the major Web portals. But the latest push is toward the relatively new wireless portals, which are set to become a regular feature on mobile phones. Mr. Jain is driving Infospace to become the premier supplier of that information, as well as the provider of commercial transactions to mobile phone users. For now, most of that information and the transactional capabilities are aimed at helping mobile consumers do things like find a restaurant in the neighborhood and make a reservation.

Mr. Jain`s game plan is to target the so-called "offline" world through wireless devices, cell phones, and other Internet-enabled devices. He expects that 40 percent of Infospace`s revenues this year will come from his information services being accessed through wireless devices; 30 percent to 35 percent is expected to come from merchant services -- that is, helping merchants promote their products and sell their services to consumers through Infospace`s wireless infrastructure. The rest will come from consumer services, which means the provision of consumer applications such as instant messaging across different technical platforms.

Great plan, but some investors in INSP must be starting to wonder how much further the recent momentum can carry the company`s shares after a scorching run. INSP is up 6,660 percent since its IPO in December of 1998, and much of that has been added in the last couple of months, as a wireless feeding frenzy has consumed Nasdaq. As of Tuesday, Mr. Jain`s company had a market capitalization of $25 billion, just four years after it was founded. This is a company that reported its $14.4 million in revenue (compared to $4.1 million for the same period the previous year) and a net loss of $2.79 in its last quarter.

To put things in perspective, Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM)`s market capitalization is $90 billion, but it has an annual revenue run rate in excess of $4 billion and in its last quarter reported over $200 million in profit.

With its astounding market capitalization, Infospace`s share price must be starting to give even its most ardent fans the jitters. Mr. Jain`s got some growing to do to fit into the large shoes he`s made for himself.

      STUD-ENABLING TECHNOLOGY
Mr. Jain reasons that his service will take off because consumers will find it convenient and merchants will have a better way to more accurately target their promotions, such as restaurant coupons. By way of an example, he said that guys on dates with their girlfriends can take their cell phones and show the maitre d` his coupon on the phone rather than bring along a paper coupon. "You can look like a real stud in front of your girlfriend," he said.

To make sure that the Infospace infrastructure is widely adopted, the company has licensed it to a wide variety of telecommunications companies such as US West (NYSE: USW), AT & T (NYSE: T), Vodafone Airtouch, British Telecom (NYSE: BTY), BellSouth (NYSE: BLS), and Bell Atlantic (NYSE: BEL), among others. These companies hope that the provision of these types of services to consumers will make them more loyal customers. Infospace makes money by taking a cut of the consumers` transactions with merchants and through licensing fees from the telecommunications companies. Approximately 350,000 merchants already use Infospace for promotions, said Mr. Jain.

"We get a $1 to $3 subscriber fee per month, and on top of that we get a piece of the commerce revenue. You do the math -- that`s a shitload of money," he said.

Estimates vary, but the market research firm International Data Corporation figures that 61.5 million people will use wireless devices to access the Internet in 2003, up from the 7.4 million today in the United States. IDC also says that the biggest market opportunity is allowing consumers to access local information such as booking restaurants.

On Tuesday, Mr. Jain described how two key purchases last year enabled Infospace to offer the services. Infospace bought the wireless Internet gateway company Saraide and electronic commerce technology vendor Prio, though it has yet to integrate the company`s technologies.

While Infospace has been widely praised for its foresight in building a business in such a new marketplace, some in the industry wonder whether Mr. Jain might have gone too far in integrating a wireless gateway into his business plan.

"One challenge will be channel conflict," says an industry insider at a private company that makes applications for wireless devices. By acquiring the wireless gateway, Infospace is now to some extent competing with the infrastructure companies who would typically license Infospace`s content.

Habt Ihr schon vergessen - KZ 310$.

Is InfoSpace Bigger Than the Internet?
      By Cory Johnson
      Editor-at-Large
      3/13/00 12:25 AM ET

SNOWBIRD, Utah -- InfoSpace.com (INSP:Nasdaq - news - boards) CEO Naveen Jain lives in a world somewhere
between being tightly wound and having a screw loose. If nothing else, he can be counted on to deliver a pulpit-thumping
      presentation.

"There are two kinds of people in this world, right? Nonbelievers and believers," the animated Jain said to his audience at the
Chase H&Q plaNET.wall.street Internet conference last week. "In other words, those who don`t believe in God, and those
who believe in God and InfoSpace. That`s OK -- the nonbelievers will be converted when we become a trillion-dollar
      company."

The Redmond, Wash.-based InfoSpace.com has seen its share price rise more than 16 times in the last year, 136% this year
alone, bucking the downward trend of so many e-commerce companies. Amazon.com (AMZN:Nasdaq - news - boards),
for example, is off 16% this millennium. eToys (ETYS:Nasdaq - news - boards), once as beloved as a Furby to Net
investors, has fallen 49% this year.

      But after the VeriSign (VRSN:Nasdaq - news - boards)-Network Solutions (NSOL:Nasdaq - news - boards) deal -- and
      the America Online (AOL:NYSE - news - boards)-Time Warner (TWX:NYSE - news - boards) merger -- investors are
looking for some new math to value companies. E-tailers, suddenly, are not delivering. Specifically, investors are interested in
      InfoSpace.com as a cash-flow machine.

Jain`s company isn`t the easiest to understand. Too often, it`s been dismissed with the description "the Internet Yellow
Pages." But it`s a lot more than that.

Essentially, InfoSpace.com is something like an e-commerce tax. At the heart of it, InfoSpace.com matches likely buyers
with likely sellers and takes its cut in many ways. For example, if a consumer sees an online ad, then later buys from the
advertiser, InfoSpace.com gets a fee -- anywhere from 2% to 25% of the purchase. If a consumer performs a search on a
site affiliated with InfoSpace.com -- 87% of the Web, according to the company -- InfoSpace.com gets a cut.

"Every time you go to NBCi (NBCI:Nasdaq - news - boards) looking for a plumber, we get paid. Every time you go to Go
Network looking for a phone number, we get paid. We have 2,500 paying partners," says Jain. "We are probably the only
partner to both Disney (DIS:NYSE - news - boards) and Playboy (PLA:NYSE - news - boards) at the same time."

And its business isn`t just with online merchants. InfoSpace.com is focused on the much bigger offline services economy as
well. InfoSpace.com is the bridge between online listings and offline service merchants. Services, it`s important to remember,
represent two-thirds of U.S. gross domestic product.

"Nine months ago, I said that most e-tailers will go out of business, and I still say that," says Jain. "E-tailers will never have
more than 10% of commerce. E-tailing is nothing but a glorified catalog. And catalogs have never had more than 6% of the
market. So how do you help the bricks-and-mortar companies drive their businesses online? What about the dry cleaners,
the plumbers, the people who cannot put their businesses on the Internet? That`s what we`re doing."

      The InfoSpace-Time Continuum
InfoSpace.com`s quarterly revenue has grown 1,314% in just two years.

      Source: Securities and Exchange Commission

But most intriguing is InfoSpace.com`s rapid move into wireless. On Dec. 6, the company announced the acquisition of two
wireless technology companies, Saraide.com and Prio, acquired for some $760 million in stock. Suddenly, InfoSpace.com
has a robust wireless e-commerce capability and deals with all of the five regional Bell operating carriers.

Globally, 25 companies use InfoSpace`s wireless services, including AT&T (T:NYSE - news - boards), Vodafone Airtouch
      (VOD:NYSE ADR - news - boards), GTE (GTE:NYSE - news - boards), U S West (USW:NYSE - news - boards), Bell
      Atlantic (BEL:NYSE - news - boards), British Telecom Cellnet and Japan`s J-Phone.

One of InfoSpace.com`s largest shareholders is F. Quint Slattery, a fund manager whose Pilgrim Baxter New Opportunities
fund is up 829% (!) in the last year, and whose Select Equity fund is up 357%. Slattery has loaded up on the stock, with
722,200 shares in his two funds. But despite his sizable gains, he says he`s holding on for a wireless payoff, seeing
InfoSpace.com as the killer application for wireless.

"Imagine I`m on my way to Joni`s house to take her out on a date, but I forgot to get flowers," says Slattery, referencing Joni
Hanson, InfoSpace.com`s investor-relations vice president. "If I show up without flowers, I`m out. So I dial up flowers on my
phone, and it points me to Joe`s Store near her house in Redmond.

"Now this is the Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq - news - boards) killer, because if Joe`s doesn`t have `flowers` in its name, Yahoo!
won`t find it. But InfoSpace.com will. InfoSpace gets paid for that search. When I buy the flowers, InfoSpace gets a piece of
that sale. And InfoSpace might tell me that the store next door to Joe`s will give me a 10% discount, which would mean that
InfoSpace gets a bigger cut, and I save some money. That`s the power of this thing -- revenue every step of the way and
convenience for the customer. I get the flowers, go to Joni`s and -- bam! -- I`m in!"

Leaving Joni aside, the pitch is persuasive. And the transformation to wireless has been dramatic. According to Jain, more
than 300,000 people already are using InfoSpace`s wireless services. This year, he says, 40% of the company`s revenue will
      come from wireless.

To be sure, by any traditional metrics, the stock is a holy terror. The company did not turn a profit last quarter. It`s trading at
659 times trailing annual revenue. By comparison, the S&P 500 average is trading at five times revenue.

And yet some of the wiser money managers on the Street can`t get enough of this story -- or this guy. By the time Jain`s
presentation ended Tuesday, the room was packed, and as soon as he finished speaking, a mob of fund managers flocked to
the stage to glean more investable information. He spent the rest of the day in one-on-one meetings with big-time money
      managers.

From the looks of things, a few may have found a new religion.

MotleyFool.com - Fool on the Hill
      InfoSpace: Enabler of Mobile Commerce?
      By Matt Richey

No matter what your opinion of the current dichotomy between Old Economy and New Economy stocks, there can be no question that the convergence of everywhere-Internet-access combined with everybody-Internet-use is creating a bounty of new companies that deserve our attention as investors. The stocks may seem insanely valued, but we`d be fools not to seek out those few gems that have the potential to build vast amounts of wealth in the decades ahead. In this pursuit, one company that`s caught my eye is InfoSpace.com (Nasdaq: INSP - news). I just began to study the company yesterday, so what lies ahead is only an initial stab at figuring out this company`s investment potential.

Armed with software and information, InfoSpace`s goal is to connect mobile Internet users to a $3.6 trillion consumer retail world. In between, InfoSpace targets the $200 billion spent annually by merchants on promotions and Web-related activities. (Numbers courtesy of InfoSpace and the Kelsey Group.) InfoSpace has secured the first-mover advantage with most every major communications carrier -- including Vodafone, AT&T, BellSouth, GTE, Bell Atlantic, U S West, and 18 others -- in order to enable "m-commerce," the latest buzzword, which stands for mobile commerce.

Sound crazy? Cell phone Rule Maker Nokia (NYSE: NOK - news) projects one billion cell phones worldwide by 2002. Estimates are for more than half of those to be Web-enabled phones, such as the Nokia 7110. The InfoSpace vision is one of ubiquitous Web phones functioning as the critical information access tool that enables purchases, both online and, significantly, offline. InfoSpace CEO Naveen Jain, formerly a Microsoft exec, recently stated, "The market opportunity for services that use the Internet to drive additional commerce to the larger, firmly entrenched offline market is huge. More than 80% of all Internet users research products online but purchase products offline."

The key to InfoSpace`s immense market opportunity is localization. Your Web phone, which sends out a signal of your current location, will allow you to be targeted with ads and promotions from local restaurants and service merchants, such as the local dry cleaners and grocery markets. InfoSpace will provide the software that makes it all run smoothly -- on any platform and any device. The company also intends to take a small cut of the transactions it enables.

It`s a compelling business model, and it appears all the more compelling based on two significant competitive advantages. First, InfoSpace has gained significant momentum through a number of big-name partnerships, including deals with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news; for shared access to MSN`s instant messaging), Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - news; to provide services for Intel`s new Web appliances), and Verisign (Nasdaq: VRSN - news; for a secure wireless e-commerce platform). Second, InfoSpace owns some unique ("patent pending") technology that allows single-click instant buying. This server-based technology appears to be a huge convenience, as it automatically fills in website payment forms, eliminating the need to ever input payment or shipping information. For the time being at least, InfoSpace appears to be protected by some fairly significant barriers to entry.

With 24 carriers already on board, the company`s economic model is scaling rapidly. Fourth-quarter 1999 revenues came in at $14.35 million, up 314% from the year-ago quarter. As a software company, gross margins are very high -- 87.8% in Q4, up 3.5 percentage points from the year prior. Lo and behold, InfoSpace is even profitable, scoring a pre-tax operating margin of 9.8% during the most recent quarter. No doubt, profit margins will climb rapidly as the company gains scale.

Great income statement overall, but the balance sheet is only so-so. A flow ratio of 2.97 indicates that InfoSpace is lacking in the working capital management department. That`s an especially poor showing considering that metric is up from a much better 0.88 a year ago. It should be pointed out that a somewhat unusual $11.4 million loan to an "unrelated third party" was responsible for skewing the flow ratio to the high side. But even without that item and the associated interest receivable, the flow ratio is still on the high side at 1.57.

All told, the balance sheet weakness is really the only sore thumb that stands out in this story. Oh, well, then there`s the matter of valuation. Even after InfoSpace shares crumbled 12.5% today, the company is still valued at $19.5 billion. That`s 340x the run-rate revenues (Q4 revenue x 4). Obviously, the market is already onto InfoSpace`s potential. Consider, however, that even at that lofty level, the stock may actually make sense if it can become the gold standard for enabling mobile commerce. I`ll pass on a prediction for that outcome, but I will keep my eye on InfoSpace`s financial statements in the quarters ahead to see if the story has legs

      Hallo Leute,

US West, GTE and AirTouch Launch Using InfoSpace`s Platform of Wireless Internet Services, Increasing Industry Momentum
Strong Deployments and Growing Usage Mark Launch of InfoSpace-Powered Services; More Carriers Expected to Launch Second Quarter

REDMOND, Wash., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- InfoSpace (Nasdaq: INSP), a leading global provider of information and commerce infrastructure services for wireless devices, merchants and Web sites, today announced the continued success and penetration of its wireless Internet services platform with the launch of InfoSpace-powered services by GTE, USWest and AirTouch. The growing number of wireless subscribers makes the InfoSpace-powered services a success, just weeks after GTE`s launch and days after the US West and AirTouch launches. InfoSpace`s platform of commerce and information services for wireless devices will be used by more than 25 carriers worldwide, including Vodafone and AT&T.

      (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990625/INSPLOGO )

"Vodafone AirTouch is the largest worldwide wireless carrier with more than 35.5 million subscribers and operations in 24 countries," said Bill Bettencourt, vice president of marketing for AirTouch Cellular. "We chose InfoSpace because it offers a set of convenient and compelling services that could be deployed quickly. We believe these services will reduce customer churn and substantially boost usage."

"InfoSpace`s unparalleled platform for wireless services will give our users the ability to not only receive useful information but also get connected, communicate and manage their lives while on the go," said Matt Sopcich, general manager for data, US West Wireless. "Providing access to these cutting-edge services, further demonstrates our commitment of delivering the most advanced wireless solution to our customers."

"We chose to partner with InfoSpace because it is the proven leader in delivering comprehensive services to leading carriers," said Marc Lefar, vice president of marketing, GTE Wireless Services. "The addition of InfoSpace`s services gives us the ability to offer our customers immediate access to the most comprehensive platform of wireless Internet services they need, wherever and whenever they need it, at the touch of a button."

      Recent launches include:

-- AirTouch Cellular introduced its first phone-based wireless Internet service, Mobile Web, in digital markets throughout Washington, Oregon, Ohio and Michigan ahead of an expanded launch planned for the second quarter. AirTouch`s Mobile Web, which is built on InfoSpace`s platform of commerce, information and communication services, offers AirTouch digital customers in Western Washington access to information, e-mail, e-commerce, mobile-originated messaging and address book and calendar functions through mobile Internet-ready phones.

-- GTE launched its service last month, powered-by InfoSpace`s wireless Internet platform. As a result, users are now able to securely access a wide range of comprehensive services, including commerce services that allow single-click buying from wireless devices, communication services that enable users to send an instant message from any device to another, localized and personalization information services including e-mail, address book and calendar.

-- US West`s BrowseNow(TM) service, powered-by InfoSpace`s comprehensive wireless Internet services platform, puts the power of the Internet in a "to go" box for wireless customers and brings the convenience and simplicity of Internet and information services customers already use to their wireless handsets.

InfoSpace arms its wireless carrier partners with the platform of services needed to differentiate their own service offerings while harnessing the transactive power of the Internet to create new revenue streams. InfoSpace attributes its continued success to the rapid adoption of its comprehensive platform from wireless carriers worldwide including Vodafone, AT&T, AirTouch, Orange, Dutchtone, Panafon, J Phone, KPN, Libertel, Omnitel, diAx, Telfort, Ben, Microcell Telecommunications, Sprint, BellSouth, AirTouch, GTE, US West, and Bell Atlantic Mobile. All of these carriers have chosen InfoSpace-powered services making it the default standard for all wireless devices. InfoSpace`s platform of services also powers services for Nokia, Ericsson and Neopoint.

"The killer applications for wireless will be communications and commerce," said Naveen Jain, chairman and CEO of InfoSpace. "Leading carriers and device manufacturers are choosing our platform of wireless services because we offer the most comprehensive and integrated communication, information and commerce services that are available today."

Through InfoSpace, wireless carriers across the world are now able to offer their subscribers the innovative services that will transform the cellular phone into a transactive device where users can conduct commerce, including the ability to purchase products with a click of a button, enter UPC codes to find a product and find and receive promotions contextually integrated with what the user is doing at that time. In addition, InfoSpace`s communication services enable users to send instant messages from device to device, and use localized and personalized information services including e-mail, address books and calendars.

In addition to the innovative solutions InfoSpace has been delivering to wireless carriers since 1996, the Company has launched additional services including:

-- Commerce services such as single-click instant buying and the electronic delivery of promotions that can be used online or offline.

-- Communication services such as device-independent e-mail and instant messaging.

-- Productivity applications such as address book, calendar and `to do` lists.

-- Transaction services such as accessing account information and transferring money.

-- Localized information such as real-time traffic reports and finding the nearest ATM.

-- Real-time alerts such as auction bids and stock alerts.

-- Security services such as personal authentication for secure transactions.

The unique single-click instant buying technology allows mobile users to press a single key to make purchases from virtually any Web site, turning wireless devices into secure e-commerce enabled devices. This patent-pending server-based technology automatically fills in Web site payment forms, eliminating the need to enter in payment or shipping information, register at sites or enter any site-specific passwords from the device.

InfoSpace is also the first company to allow mobile users to find and receive promotions on wireless devices from retailers and service-based merchants, such as dry cleaners and restaurants, that can be used online and offline. To take advantage of the promotion, the user can purchase the goods online, through a catalog, go to the retail store or simply utilize the service. Using this technology, promotions are seamlessly matched and automatically credited to the user`s credit card statement through secure back-end transaction processing.

GAITHERSBURG, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 2000--Netword, Inc. (OTC: NTWD - news), creators of the patented Netword System of Internet keywords, and InfoSpace.com, Inc. das ganze errinnert wirklich an letztes jahr im frühling.

      InfoSpace seen linking with Hanover
      Catalog retailer`s order-fulfillment operation involved

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Catalog retailer Hanover Direct is linking with InfoSpace in an alliance that looks to have the potential to expand the customer base for Hanover`s order-fulfillment business.

The companies are expected to announce the alliance Thursday, according to a person close to the arrangement. Officials of the two companies were not immediately available for comment.

Under the plan, InfoSpace (INSP: news, msgs) is expected to promote merchandise from Hanover`s 13 catalogs to its network of shoppers.

InfoSpace, an infrastructure services provider for wireless devices and Web sites, maintains an affiliate network with 2,100 Web sites, including the America Online (AOL: news, msgs) and Disney (DIS: news, msgs) networks. The company is best-known for its phone directories on the Internet.

For Hanover (HNV: news, msgs), the biggest component of the alliance could involve order fulfillment via Hanover`s Keystone unit. Plans are for InfoSpace to offer its network of some 300,000 merchants Keystone`s fulfillment services.

Keystone had 18 third-party clients at the close of the year, the company said in a recent statement. The unit generated revenues of $14.9 million in 1999.

Hanover`s catalog brands include Domestications, The Company Store and Silhouettes.

      `Spacers` circle the wagons
      Is InfoSpace `more than justs a `.com`?

      By Shawn Langlois, CBS MarketWatch

Merely a speed bump on the road to riches.

That`s what investors on the message boards are calling InfoSpace`s ragged performance during the Nasdaq`s recent downturn. When the tech market turned jittery earlier this month, shares of InfoSpace.com (INSP: news, msgs) followed suit with a 45 percent free fall. See Bambi Francisco`s Net Sense.

Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Nasdaq spent most of the week roaring back toward its highs, INSP couldn`t recoup the losses. Still, the longs in cyberspace liked the company`s chances of rebounding heading toward next quarter`s earnings announcement and the stock split scheduled for April 6. See full story.

On CBS MarketWatch, GregoryPB couldn`t understand why the Street has been shying away from the stock: "When will the market realize that InfoSpace is no longer just a `.com`? Will it be when revenues reflect the massive earnings attainable from wireless content? With billions of wireless devices enabled over the next two to three years ... conservatility, the revenue that InfoSpace is capable of generating is mind-boggling. Imagine 500 million wireless Internet devices around the globe placing cash into the vaults of InfoSpace at one to two dollars per month apiece. A week of market turmoil does not undo the future."

JBJr tried to make sense of the drop on Raging Bull: "The Nikkei is still having jitters about Nets being overvalued. While INSP is much more than a Net play, the market still thinks it`s a Net stock. They just don`t get it, but perception is the cruelest form of reality. This may weigh on the price. I also think that Fortune`s expose on Net companies` financial smoke and mirrors coupled with MicroStrategy`s dog-and-pony show has spooked a lot of people."

Speaking of which, Krisko was one hesitant bull: "Something is very spooky here. Almost every day there is good news that would whip other Internet stocks into a frenzy, and it doesn`t affect us at all. I came off other positions that were kicking (butt) to get more INSP to try and cost average my original price. I`m still wondering if I`m a bonehead or a visionary."

Over on Silicon Investor, there was a bearish clan that spoke up amid the cheerleading. Impristine felt like he was "shooting a pellet gun at the Hindenburg" when he and SpyTrdr, his naysaying comrade, offered a bevy of negative posts like this one: "Worth almost half as much as General Motors at the high? What could people possibly be thinking? How can judgement (sic) become so clouded?" And "INSP is more than high tech; it`s science fiction."

The barbs just kept on flying as the bulls and the bears went head-to-head throughout the message boards. The proof is in the pudding, I suppose, and, despite recent foibles, InfoSpace has proved itself a company to contend with in the information technology space.
