Apple? Was kommt von denen schon Neues, Großartiges? Wenig, oder? Google?

Microsoft (MSFT) reported earnings this week, and shares gapped higher and right into long-term technical resistance. The integrity of this level will help determine the direction of the stock price going forward.

A large horizontal channel pattern formed on the weekly chart in 2015, and a breakout from this pattern projected an $8 move. The breakout occurred later that year, and the stock rapidly met the target projection. It began trading in a second channel, with the $56 level acting as resistance and the resistance level of the previous channel acting as support. It has been moving in this new horizontal channel for the last nine months.

On the daily timeframe, the stock can be seen gaping up and into channel resistance after the company reported earnings this week There had been strong positive momentum going into the report after the June low was successfully tested, but Chaikin money flow has been tracking lower during this period and is currently below its center line, and the relative strength index is entering an oversold condition.

These are not definitive indications that the stock is preparing to pull back, but they are signs of waning price and money flow momentum.

If Microsoft is able to move above resistance, the channel pattern projects another $8 move in the stock, but there will likely have to be some digestion of the recent gains before it will be able to meet that objective. If the stock fails at this current resistance level, the July gap is the first downside objective, the next is the rising 200-day moving average currently in the $52 and finally there is the channel bottom.

Microsoft (MSFT) was the subject of a slew of analyst upgrades following the release of the company's fourth-quarter earnings results Tuesday after the closing bell. The tech company was able to beat analyst expectations amid falling PC sales thanks mainly to its cloud services segment performing so well in the quarter.

The stock closed trading Wednesday up 5.3% to $55.91 per share, its highest jump in nine months, after reporting fourth-quarter revenue of $22.6 billion, ahead of analysts' $22.1 billion estimates. The company's bottom line of 69 cents a share was also ahead of estimates by a dime.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank reaffirmed a buy rating and $65 price target while lauding the company's cloud services. Microsoft's commercial cloud business ended fiscal 2016 with an annualized run rate of $12.1 billion, it expects that number to grow to $20 billion by fiscal 2018. The company said nearly 60% of Fortune 500 companies have at least three of its cloud offerings.

"More so than any other mega-cap tech stock, MSFT seems to be navigating the transition to the cloud and subscription model very well," Deutsche Bank analyst Karl Keirstead wrote in today's note. "This, we believe, should offset any weakness in the on-premise portfolio and sustain MSFT's valuation multiple. Downside risks include further erosion in on-premise revs growth."

It wasn't all good news for the company, however, as it forecast a 6% decline in its personal computing segment in the current quarter. The company's implied EPS guidance of 67 cents in the first quarter was short of the bank's own 70 cent per share expectations.

LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) founder and chairman Reid Hoffman chose to sell to Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), in part, because it was getting too hard to compete with the Redmond company and other technology giants.

Startups and private companies can compete with Microsoft, Facebook and Google, he said, but it became more difficult for LinkedIn once the company went public.

"Once you get into a public company, if you're not throwing a lot of ability to do R&D, and to progress your technology at a very fast rate, then it's difficult to compete,” Hoffman told CNB. "As a public company you're held to, 'OK, what is your quarterly earnings? How does that growth look like?'"

Microsoft announced last month plans to acquire LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, or $196 per share. Hoffman, as the company’s largest shareholder, stands to pocket $2.9 billion if the deal goes through.

Instead of trying to compete Microsoft, he said, now the company will help LinkedIn grow customers. Microsoft plans to integrate LinkedIn into its enterprise cloud service Office 365 and other offerings, which will put the platform in front of millions more users.

"To reach a lot more people and to grow much more strongly, especially internationally, Microsoft brings all that," Hoffman said.

From Microsoft’s end, the deal could help anchor the company’s dominance in the workplace and bolster its effort against two of its largest competitors: Amazon and Salesforce.

      Guten Abend allerseits !
