By Bambi Francisco, CBS.MarketWatch.com
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Playboy.com, which celebrates its 10th anniversary Wednesday, is a pioneer in online publishing, but it`ll be a trend follower in Internet dating.
The Internet unit of Playboy Enterprises (PLA: news, chart, profile) is considering expanding into the online dating business, according to Jay Jay Nesheim, Playboy spokeswoman. But there are no imminent plans, she said.
Asked how an online dating service would work when Playboy`s demographics are skewed so heavily toward men, Nesheim said the idea of such a service is still nascent.
Should Playboy.com expand successfully into online matchmaking, it would significantly boost its online traffic.
Playboy.com had 2.2 million unique visitors in July, according to comScore Media Metrix. In the past six months, the monthly visit total has been between 1.5 million and 2.5 million.
This is far less than the traffic going to the larger online dating sites. The personals pages at Yahoo (YHOO: news, chart, profile) constitute the No. 1 dating site, with 7.1 million unique visitors in July.
Matchnet, which owns American Singles and Jdate.com, stood at No. 2, with 6.7 million visitors, in the same period. InterActiveCorp`s (IACI: news, chart, profile) Match.com had 5 million. Monster`s (MNST: news, chart, profile) Tickle Personals had 4.6 million. And Microsoft`s (MSFT: news, chart, profile) MSN Dating had 3.1 million visitors.
Sites that had less than 3 million visitors included Friendfinder.com, with 2.8 million visitors; Vintacom, which owns Dating.com, Singleme.com and Dreammates.com, with 2.3 million; Eharmony.com, at 1.4 million; and Friendster, with 700,000.
While Playboy.com`s traffic may be lighter in comparison, the site does fare well in comparison with most other online publishers as measured by the amount of revenue generated from paid content. According to a comScore and Online Publishing Association`s report, Playboy.com ranked No. 15 in 2003 for paid-content sites.
Playboy.com, which has 100,000 subscribers and grew sales by 20 percent in the first half of this year, also generates revenue through advertising and commerce. Its multiple revenue-stream strategy has helped Playboy.com stay profitable since hitting profitability in December 2002.
Online dating would be yet another revenue stream, and possibly a very lucrative one. InterActiveCorp`s personals business generated $48.5 million in the second quarter.
For now, Playboy.com is expanding on its subscription options.
As part of the online unit`s anniversary, Playboy.com is launching this week a daily subscription service for a $12 annual fee.
