High-tech firms lead way in fourth quarter

      By George Avalos

      CONTRA COSTA TIMES

      High-tech companies are hot again.

But before investors start to fret and mutter the "b" word -- as in bubble -- they can set their minds at ease. The gains are based on solid firms and solid products.

Still, the final three months of 2004 produced enough strong gains for tech companies to allow them to dominate the list of winners for public companies in the East Bay and Bay Area, according to the latest Times Bulls and Bears survey.

In contrast, investors pummeled the stocks of biotechnology and medical companies in the East Bay during the fourth quarter of 2004. Four of the five worst-performing stocks during the fourth quarter were in the bioscience-medical sector.

Nine out of the 10 companies whose stocks had the best performance in the October-December period were in the high-tech arena. This points to a clear recovery for the sector, which plunged during the bear market.

"Silicon Valley is coming back and so is the rest of the Bay Area," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst with Enderle Group, a San Jose-based market researcher. "Tech is resurgent."

The seeds for the rebound may have been planted with the tech crash of 2000-2002. Tapan Munroe, a director with consulting firm LECG Corp. and a Moraga-based economist, said the collapse of the technology sector left behind plenty of strong survivors.

"The boom-bust cycle was a cleansing process as a result of all the mistakes that were made by the dot-bombs," Munroe said. "The companies that are coming back are really solid companies that provide very useful tech goods and services."

One East Bay company managed to be both a winner and a loser in the same report.

Ipix Corp., a San Ramon firm that makes visual data products that can be used in a variety of security and surveillance systems, was the best-performing company of the year for both the East Bay and the Bay Area. But Ipix also was one of the worst-performing companies in the East Bay during the fourth quarter.

The highlight for Ipix came in early June when Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge commended it as a company that is helping make the nation more secure. Since then, Ipix`s shares have slumped. Although the company`s shares soared 230 percent for all of 2004, based primarily on the company`s second-quarter strength, Ipix`s stock was down 21 percent in the fourth quarter.

      Income (loss) from continuing ops
      after income taxes $2,330 ($1,023) $6,056 ($4,925)
Net income (loss) per common share $0.01 ($0.22) ($0.05) ($0.95)

      Year to year comparisons:

-- Net loss from continuing operations after taxes was $9.8 million compared to $4.7 million in 2003; and

-- Basic net loss per share was $0.95 compared to $0.05.

IPIX completed its fourth quarter and year end with the commencement of the sale of its AdMission business unit. The sale--completed February 11, 2005--is reported as discontinued operations in 2004 (and prior years) to reflect our current business structure. The sale of the AdMission business unit corresponded with our strategic plan for streamlining operations and focusing on the further development and expansion of our patented, immersive imaging technologies for security and commercial applications.

2004 marked the launch of IPIX`s award-winning line of 360-degree, immersive surveillance cameras which were selected for use at the 2004 G8 Summit, as well as the 2005 U.S. Presidential Inauguration. IPIX dedicated considerable resources during 2004 on this product launch, marketplace penetration, and continued research and development. Our entry into this market is marked by rising sales, the establishment of numerous strategic business alliances and expansion of our distribution channels both domestically and internationally. IPIX is positioned to capitalize on these efforts moving forward.

At December 31, 2004, the company had $14.9 million in cash, investments, short term and long term restricted cash and $15.2 million in stockholders` equity. In addition, we believe we will be successful in winning research awards from federal agencies that support research and development of visual intelligence applications.

"The substantial developments, strategic partnerships and product awareness created in 2004 clearly mark the direction we are headed," said IPIX President and CEO Clara Conti. "I am confident in our organization`s ability to continue to achieve our strategic business objectives in 2005."

During the past 12 months, IPIX identified market opportunities and generated interest from federal, state and local governments and various commercial enterprises. Commercial markets include transportation, banking, retail, public venues, educational institutions and critical infrastructure. In addition, IPIX established sales channels throughout Europe (including Russia), the Middle East, and the Pacific Rim (including Australia).

"We enter 2005 with a definitive plan for our business," said Conti. "We have made a commitment to recruiting talented and dedicated professionals at all levels of our organization (to join our existing group) as we continually work to expand our platform of industry-leading, immersive imaging technologies."

IPIX Corporation (NASDAQ:IPIX), a premier supplier of 360-degree, immersive imaging technologies for visual intelligence applications, announced today its appointment of Charles Crew as executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer, effective April 1, 2005. A seasoned professional, Crew brings more than 30 years of financial and operating experience to IPIX and its executive team, and will be responsible for the company`s global financial and administrative operations.

"As we continue to expand our leading-edge immersive visual surveillance solutions, build distribution channels, develop significant business relationships and increase our market penetration, it`s critical to have someone with Charles` background on our management team," said Clara Conti, president and CEO of IPIX. "His experience with both publicly traded and privately held high-growth companies will provide IPIX with an important element in achieving the next level of our corporate growth."

In addition to overseeing market risk management, cash management and capital structure, Crew will be responsible for IPIX`s legal and human resources activities. He also will report on IPIX`s financial information, facilitate regulatory compliance and communicate with Wall Street, investors and shareholders.

Crew previously served as executive vice president, CFO and a member of the board of directors for Cigital, Inc., a provider of software quality and software security solutions, where he developed and executed the company`s long-term strategic plan, including securing multiple rounds of venture capital funding. Prior to Cigital, Crew spent nine years at Group 1 Software, (recently acquired by Pitney Bowes, Inc.) as executive vice president, CFO and board member. At Group 1, Crew successfully managed several business units and spearheaded the merger and acquisition activities, which repositioned the company from a narrow, niche market to an international, specialty software provider. He also managed the restructuring of the business and secured both debt and private equity funding.

"This is an exciting time in IPIX`s nearly 20-year history, as well as in the markets we serve," said Crew. "I look forward to my executive leadership role and guiding IPIX`s financial decisions as we reposition ourselves to focus on our core competencies in the areas of 360-degree, immersive imaging technologies."

Crew holds a bachelor`s degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore and an MBA in marketing and finance from Loyola College in Baltimore. He earned an MBA upgrade from Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. Crew is a certified public accountant in the state of Maryland and has held a number of leadership positions in prominent technology organizations, including his role as former chair of the Northern Virginia Technology Council`s CFO Forum committee.

VistaScape Partnership Represents New Solution in IPIX`s Visual Intelligence Platform

IPIX Corporation (NASDAQ:IPIX), a premier supplier of 360-degree, immersive imaging technologies for visual intelligence applications, announced today a technology partnership integrating VistaScape`s SiteIQ(TM) surveillance software with IPIX CommandView(TM) cameras. The partnership will provide at-risk facilities the ability to detect, analyze and respond to potential security risks before they take place using SiteIQ`s graphical map interface and automated surveillance analysis.

"IPIX`s surveillance cameras represent the highest level of video surveillance sensor technology," said Glenn McGonnigle, President and CEO of VistaScape. "SiteIQ harnesses the full capabilities of CommandView`s 360-degree, immersive field-of-view and provides automated, policy-based detection for government and commercial enterprises."

Unlike video analytic point solutions, VistaScape`s SiteIQ performs automated video analysis and provides real-time situational detail through an interactive graphical user interface. The map displays the entire facility on a single screen, allowing security personnel to view sensor detail--video, chemical detection, radar, access control, etc.--on demand, as well as receive real-time alerts when detected activity breaches pre-set security policies. As a principal sensor in the SiteIQ platform, the CommandView camera enhances SiteIQ`s capabilities by providing a continuous 360-degree field-of-view.

A single IPIX camera can be used in conjunction with SiteIQ to perform both continuous video analysis and object tracking--typically requiring a minimum of two cameras to perform--providing a greater level of functionality and reducing the number of necessary cameras, infrastructure and installation costs.

"Using a traditional single camera approach for situational awareness and video analysis is like reading a book looking through a soda-straw," said IPIX President and CEO Clara Conti. "You can read the words, but you are only getting a few letters at a time. IPIX`s immersive imaging technology provides security personnel a continuous high-resolution video feed of the entire 360-degree field-of-view, allowing for accurate evaluation of the situation and the real-time coordination of appropriate response."

SiteIQ solutions are currently protecting national borders, industrial facilities, transportation and shipping hubs, and military bases.

SiteIQ delivers unparalleled situational awareness, enabling personnel to focus on prevention, not reaction. The day/night IP-camera combines full, 360-degree views in low-light, no-light and infrared (IR) lighting-assisted environments.

IPIX Corporation (NASDAQ:IPIX), a premier supplier of 360-degree, immersive imaging technologies for visual intelligence applications, today announced it secured a $2.4 million research contract from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to research and build the world`s highest resolution video camera. The camera will be used for aerial surveillance missions, with applications including border patrol, battle surveillance and forensic intelligence.

The contract win represents the first funding IPIX has received from DARPA.

"This contract from DARPA is validation of our ability to advance the research of high-resolution video camera technology to the next level," says Clara Conti, president and CEO of IPIX. "We are honored to be chosen at this time in our nation`s history because our research will directly benefit those on the front lines of military service and homeland defense."

The high-resolution camera will also serve as a sophisticated security and forensic tool.

"East Tennessee continues to produce cutting-edge technologies that will lead the nation to provide the necessary equipment in meeting tomorrow`s high-tech demands," said Congressman Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.).

Jede Meinung bringt meist neue Aspekte.

      Schönes WE :)

      Hallo Leute,
