Novatel Wireless Forecasts Increased Shipments of Cards for First-Quarter Sales

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Novatel Wireless Inc., a maker of modems for wireless Internet access, said Thursday that though the first quarter is normally a seasonally soft period, the company currently forecasts increased shipments of its new EV-DO cards and quad-band UMTS cards.

As a result, Novatel expects quarterly revenue to more than double from the prior-year period and range between $32 million and $34 million. However, this figure is below current analyst consensus estimates of $35.8 million.

Novatel shares rose 10 cents to $13.40 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq National Market.

UPDATE 3-Sierra Wireless sees first-quarter loss; stock falls
      Wed Jan 26, 2005 10:52 PM ET
(Adds fund manager and analyst comment, further detail, updates stock. In U.S. dollars unless noted)

      By Jeffrey Hodgson

TORONTO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Wireless modem maker Sierra Wireless Inc. (SW.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) (SWIR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , projected a first-quarter loss and an almost 70 percent decline in revenues from the fourth quarter on Wednesday, which sent its shares down sharply in after-hours trading.

The company, which also reported weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, said revenues would fall to between $18 million and $20 million for the first quarter, producing a loss of between $9.2 million and $9.9 million, or between 35 and 38 cents per share.

Analysts had forecast a first-quarter profit of 20 cents a share before exceptional items on revenues of $53.9 million.

"This may be, in my experience, the single biggest quarterly miss I have ever seen, which is why the stock is trading off," said Duncan Stewart, a fund manager with Tera Capital in Toronto, which holds the stock.

The news wiped out more than a third of the value of the company`s stock, which dropped to $9.50 in after-hours trade on the INET electronic brokerage from its close of $14.50 on Nasdaq.

Sierra said first quarter results will be hurt by expected weaker demand for its flagship product, the AirCard wireless modem, and for its embedded modules.

"We expect revenue in the first quarter of 2005 to be approximately $40 million less than in Q4 2004," the company said in a statement.

"This is partially a result of lower sales from embedded modules that will not include further shipments to PalmOne for the Treo600," the company said in a statement.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Sierra Wireless said its profit for the fourth quarter rose to $7.3 million, or 28 cents a share, in the quarter to Dec. 31, from $1.9 million, or 8 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter.

Revenues in the quarter rose to $58.8 million from $34.6 million.

Analysts had expected a profit of 29 cents per share before exceptional items, on revenues of $63 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

In October, Sierra forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $63 million, net earnings of $7.7 million and earnings per share of 29 cents.

The company said fourth quarter results were hurt by weaker demand for its AirCard wireless modem.

The company said it plans to step up research and development work in 2005.

"They`re saying all the things one would expect them to say, which is in some way kind of frightening. `Well, we`re going to spend more on R&D this year.` That`s because nobody wants to buy our current product so we have to go invent some new ones," Stewart said.

One analyst said he was also disappointed with sales of the company`s Voq smartphone.

"It doesn`t look like it`s taken off yet. Now you put on top of it what appears to be a rather dramatic change in the rate of shipments of PC cards, and you`ve got the makings of a very weak quarter," the analyst said.

      FORECASTS MISSED

Shares of rival Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) fell to $11.80 in after-hours trade from its close of $13.30 on Nasdaq.

"Novatel`s shares are down because of Sierra, but it`s a significant overreaction," said Erik Zamkoff, analyst with Independent Research Group LLC. He said in terms of market share, "Sierra`s loss is Novatel`s gain." (With additional reporting by Susan Taylor in Ottawa and Sue Zeidler in Los Angeles. ($1=$1.23 Canadian)

Qualcomm Seen As Best Way To Play 3G
David Ng, 03.29.06, 9:34 AM ET

The wireless handset market looks set for a strong 2006, with Qualcomm leading the way as the best stock for investors to play 3G migration, according to a report from Cowen & Co.

The research firm expects the global wireless handset to grow 14% year-over-year in 2006, thanks to demand for certain popular 2G handsets and the push into 3G.

"We believe 3G will hit an inflection point this year, propelled by the ability to provide high-bandwidth services and the availability of compelling devices," wrote Cowen analyst Matthew Hoffman in a Tuesday report.

The analyst said he prefers Qualcomm (nasdaq: QCOM - news - people ) as the best way to gain exposure to the 3G migration on the device side. He said Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) has solid near-term fundamentals, with the company gaining market share in the first quarter. Also benefiting is data card maker Novatel Wireless (nasdaq: NVTL - news - people ), which is leveraging HSDPA and mobile PCs.

"3G uptake is still one of the most controversial topics in the industry," said Hoffman. "We believe adoption will be rapid and that the roll-out's breadth is underappreciated by the market."

The analyst reiterated "outperform" ratings on Qualcomm, Motorola and Novatel. Elsewhere in the sector, he maintained "neutral" ratings on Sierra Wireless (nasdaq: SWIR - news - people ) and Brightpoint (nasdaq: CELL - news - people ).

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2006--Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL - News), a leading provider of wireless broadband access solutions, and Panasonic Computer Solutions Company today announced that they have joined forces to embed Novatel Wireless 3G mini-PCI Express modems within Panasonic® Toughbook® notebook computers.

Initially, Novatel Wireless' embedded Expedite EU730 HSDPA modems will be integrated into select fully-rugged and semi-rugged Panasonic Toughbook notebook computers. Certification for use on North American networks is expected to be achieved in the near future.
