      Thursday, May 17, 2007.

Today has been an interesting day, in that my phone rang off the hook all day, and I spoke to quite a few of my friends about the PM sector. The questions that I heard repeated were: "Am I concerned about the selloff?" and "At what point do I sell?"

This suggests to me that we are close to capitulation, if so many people are suddenly getting fed up to the hilt with the constant meltdown in the sector that they begin to think about selling themselves. Capitulation of course marks the low point in a correction, ie. those who sell choose the exact worse time to do so. Now I do not look for a major capitulation event because I am still convinced that there is not much speculative excess priced into the market anyway. The selloffs we have seen for the last few weeks have come on low volume for the most part. So I do not look for a big collapse yet to come. But I do sense that some nerves are getting frayed.

Now let me get back to my own sentiment. There is an old expression that states: "Adversity does not build character, it reveals it..." I agree with that statement. Facing the uncertainty of multiple selloffs is going to create adversity for the average investor. People will start to question their decisions, and perhaps allow emotion to affect their trading. For me it is a non-issue. I can honestly say that if we got a major rally that started tomorrow, and all of my juniors regained all of the losses, I would be pissed off and think I should have found a way to buy more at the lows. It would not occur to me to sell a share of anything. This adversity that we are facing is nothing new, and I built it into my risk profile before I hit the buy button.

There is not one stock that I own right now that I have any concern for in the long term. Even some of the more beat-up juniors that have been punished to turn big paper gains into big paper losses. Not one... If you can ask yourself that question and honestly answer in the same way, then you have demonstrated the character that you need to play in this sector. If not, then you must accept that on some level you have been influenced by other factors: the desire for instant gratification, greed, gambling, etc.

This is the time of year that people are forced to confront what their real motivation is. It is a test of commitment. While I have no regrets, I do feel some frustration. I wanted to pay off my mortgage this year, buy a larger boat, and start to live a lifestyle more in relation to my net worth. So I have decided to accept another delay to reach those goals.

I believe a dollar that I keep invested today is worth 3 or4 dollars next year or the year after. My father used to remind that I need to put the horse in front of the goddamn wagon. That was his way of telling me to go without the toys and build the wealth before I spend it. And that is what I have decided to do.

To answer the questions that I have been asked all day, I will not consider selling my PM juniors no matter how severe the correction goes. I think the deeper the selloff, the more attractive the values will be, and the more extended any bozos that decide to short will be. The spring will be wound, and then we will get the next big rally in the fall if not sooner. It is worse this time around because I have so much more money invested, so the paper losses are huge. But its still the same game in the same sector that I have seen for 4 years, and it will not end any different. Very few people have what it takes to make that decision. Those who can be honest with themselves and realize what their motivation is will know how to act this time around, and be better off for the same situation when it comes around next year.

      cheers!

I wish I had a coherent theory on the whole issue of naked shorting and how FR fits into that. Until I saw the company listed on a deliver default notice I was not even aware it was a target, and I have no idea what the end game may be to resolve it. The surge in hedge fund capital is behind a lot of this. When a legitimate fund wants to short a stock they have to borrow real shares to sell. If they just hit the sell button that is naked shorting. In theory, these transactions are settled by the same firm buying the stock back and cancelling out the position within the 3 day window to deliver the shares. So by the time the default notice is issued, the transaction has already been covered. It is illegal but who is enforcing the rules? From what I heard, it is is a real problem and the regulators are way behind the curve. How much of this is related to the current slide in FR I have no way of knowing, but I can state with confidence that something stinks in the trading.
The PP was handled inefficiently IMO, because they originally wanted to do a bought deal for the entire $40 million and had to change the terms midway through when it became clear that a prospectus could not be filed in time. After that announcement, the stock has been driven successively lower day after day. I think it gave the shorts a longer time window to hit the stock, since the interval while a placement is underway is always a weak point in the trading for a stock. The end result was that the company was not able to raise the full amount they wanted, and the stock traded below the issue price for some of the time so it should come as no surprise.

I do see FR recovering to set a new high, once the dust settles. All the silver juniors are getting hit in the teeth right now, and the usual nonsense from some analysts about a double top in silver, breakdown in support levels, etc has spooked the market. I think fundamentals trump technicals, and with three mines producing and improved efficiency, not to mention the step up in exploration now that the cash is in hand from the placement, there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about the longer term trend for FR. The stock has a history of extreme volatility and we could rebound just as quickly as it was pounded lower. I do hope a handfull of retail shorts are also on the hook as they could be the launching pad to move FR back above $5 when the first dead-cat bounce for the sector arrives.

      cheers!
