Boom to boost BHP, Rio

THE global mining industry boom will continue for the foreseeable future due to the impact of China-driven demand on commodity prices and long supply-response lead times, a new report says.

Global mining sector profits more than doubled in 2004 for the second year in a row, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers report, while return on equity tripled to 19 per cent.
"With the Chinese Government having set the target of doubling GDP by 2020, demand is expected to continue," the report says.

"This should mean another bumper year for the global mining industry in 2005. Rather than being at the top of the commodity cycle, the industry may be undergoing a structural change in global demand - enter the dragon!"

The world`s 40 largest mining companies reported a 111 per cent increase in aggregate net profits for 2004, up from $US13.2 billion ($A17.3 billion) in 2003 to $US27.9 billion, while revenue was up almost 40 per cent to $US184 billion.









This was the result of increased demand worldwide, particularly from China, and a weaker US dollar, which all helped to push up commodity prices.

BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Anglo American and CVRD accounted for 40 per cent of the sector`s $US461 billion market capitalisation, but none of these behemoths made the top five in terms of total shareholder returns for 2004.

French miner Cameco and US minerals group Peabody took the honours with total returns of 180 per cent and 140 per cent respectively.

Despite the bullish outlook PwC`s Asia-Pacific mining practice leader, Tim Goldsmith, warned industry players about the dangers of complacency and the need to protect high margins by remaining focused on rising costs such as energy and freight.

"Australia is well placed to continue to benefit from China`s increased demand for mineral products, particularly iron ore and coal," he said.

"However, Australian operators in particular must ensure we do not become complacent in the boom and lose focus on developing infrastructure and ongoing exploration.

"The challenge now facing all companies in the sector is how to make best use of their growing cash balances, with increased pressure for money to be returned to shareholders unless it is reinvested quickly."

Merger and acquisition activity has helped improve decisions on development and expansion and mitigate the risks of a boom-and-bust cycle developing, the report says.

BHP Billiton sichert sich Mehrheit an WMC
Der australische Minenkonzern BHP Billiton (Nachrichten) hat sich mit 55,45 Prozent den Mehrheitsanteil an dem Branchenkollegen WMC Resources (Nachrichten) gesichert. Wie BHP am Freitag weiter mitteilte, wird die Angebotsfrist zur Übernahme für A$7,85 je Aktie verlängert. Vergangenen März bot BHP für WMC A$9,2 Mrd.

Uran: BHP Biliton hat Weltmarktanteil von 40%
Der britisch-australische Minenkonzern BHP Billiton (Nachrichten) ist laut einer Pressemitteilung vom Freitag nun im Besitz von 90.59% der Aktien des Übernahmeziels WMC Resources und ist damit befähigt, auch die noch restlich ausstehenden Aktien zu übernehmen. WMC betreibt Basismetall-Minen und hat große Nickel- und Kuper-Resourcen. Zudem hält WMC 40% der weltweit bekannten Uran-Vorkommen in der Mine in Olympic Dam in Südaustralien. Mit der Übernahme wird BHP Billiton zum weltweit zweitgrößten Kupfer- und zum weltweit drittgrößten Nickel-Produzenten.
