Interview mit Phillips S. Baker Jr., Präsident und CEO der Hecla Mining Company
Am Rande des European Gold Forum der Denver Gold Group am 20. April 2005 interviewte Richard Mayr von ArgentumInvest für Goldseiten.de Phillips S. Baker Jr., Präsident und CEO der Hecla Mining Company.

Kurzvita: Phillips S. Baker Jr. studierte an der Universität von Houston und an der Texas A&M Universität und hält mehrere MBA Titel. Er arbeitete in seiner 17-jährigen Berufslaufbahn u.a. bei der Battle Mountain Gold Company und Pegasus Gold Inc., wo er bis zum Vizepräsidenten und Chief Financial Officer (CFO) aufstieg. In dieser Zeit war er vor allem mit Übernahmen und Akquisitionen wie auch Projektfinanzierungen betraut. Im Mai 2001 wurde er CFO der Hecla Mining Company, bevor er im Mai 2003 zum CEO berufen wurde.


RM: Herr Baker, bitte nennen Sie für die Leser von Goldseiten.de die wichtigsten Rahmendaten Ihres Unternehmens. (Anm.: Download Hecla Mining Präsentation, PDF, 113 kB)

PB: Die Hecla Mining Company existiert seit 1891 und damit ist das Unternehmen einer der ältesten Edelmetallproduzenten in den Vereinigten Staaten. Zur Zeit haben wir eine Reserve von 80 Millionen Unzen Silber und 840.000 Unzen Gold. Die Cash Kosten für eine Unze Silber betragen derzeit unter 2,50 Dollar und für eine Unze Gold unter 185 Dollar.


RM: Was ist Ihr Hauptziel und wie ist die finanzielle Situation der Hecla Mining Company?

PB: Das Silbergeschäft soll vorrangig weiter forciert werden, wir investieren zur Zeit ca. 30 Millionen Dollar in Explorationsprogramme. Wegen unserer guten finanziellen Situation mit 80 Millionen Dollar Cash ist deshalb auch keine weitere Aktienemission geplant.


RM: Wo liegen Ihre Projekte?

PB: Unsere Operationen erstrecken sich von Nord- nach Südamerika. Wir produzieren und explorieren in Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, Mexiko und Venezuela.






RM: Welche Produktionszahlen erwarten Sie für Gold und Silber im laufenden Jahr?.

PB: Wir erwarten eine Produktion von 190.000 Unzen Gold und von 6,5 Millionen Unzen Silber.


RM: Fallen andere Metalle als Nebenprodukt bei der Gold- und Silberproduktion an und in welchen Mengen?

PB: Ja, es fallen Blei und Zink an. Im Jahr 2004 haben wir ca. 20.000 Tonnen Blei und 25.600 Tonnen Zink produziert.


RM: Charttechnisch sieht Silber sehr interessant aus. Wo sehen Sie den Silberpreis in Dollar in den nächsten 6 bis 12 Monaten?

PB: Ich gehe davon aus, dass der Silberpreis das Potential hat, wieder zweistellig zu werden.


RM: Sehen Sie für Ihre Firma irgendwelche Risiken?

PB: Nein. Das einzige Risiko unserer Firma ist personenbezogen, die Mitarbeiter haben das know-how.


RM: Wie stehen Sie zu der oft vorgebrachten Meinung, dass Silber wegen der Einführung der digitalen Photographie in Zukunft weniger nachgefragt werden wird?

PB: Ich denke, dass die Nachfrage nach Silber in der Photographie innerhalb der nächsten fünf Jahre nur schwach zurückgeht. Im Gegensatz dazu wurde Silber in den letzten Jahren verstärkt zur Produktion von Schmuck und Silberwaren nachgefragt, ebenso erhöhte sich die Nachfrage aus anderen Anwendungsbereichen, wie z.B. aus der Medizin- und Filtertechnik wegen seiner antibakteriellen Eigenschaften. Der Bedarf der Elektroindustrie ist innerhalb der letzten 10 Jahre gleich stark geblieben.


RM: Es ist bekannt, dass sich über die letzten Jahre im Markt bis heute ein Angebotsdefizit von über 50.000 Tonnen aufgetürmt hat. Was sagen Sie dazu?

PB: Die Nachfrage ist seit Jahren wesentlich höher als die Primärproduktion und die Rückgewinnung von Silber zusammen. Es wird über kurz oder lang zu einem Ausgleich des Defizits über den Preis kommen. Auch die Lagerbestände sind auf historischen Tiefs. Ich denke, es gibt genügend Gründe, warum Silber weiter ansteigen kann.

Timberline Resources Announces Encouraging Sample Results From the Snowstorm Project

SPOKANE, Wash., June 13, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Timberline Resources Corporation (Other OTC:TBLC.PK - News) today announced the results of its dump sampling program at the Snowstorm Project in north Idaho`s ``Silver Valley.`` Timberline can earn a 49-percent interest in the Snowstorm Project from Hecla Mining Company (NYSE:HL - News) by completing a Phase I exploration program with minimum expenditures of $250,000 by October 2006.

The Snowstorm Project features the Snowstorm Mine, a small but highly profitable operation from the early-1900s that produced 800,000 tons of ore averaging 4-percent copper and 6 ounces per ton (oz/t) silver. The dump sampling program targeted historic workings at the Snowstorm Mine, along with adits and shafts to the northwest in the Snowshoe, Lucky Calumet, and Missoula Tunnel areas. The sampled material is representative of the Snowstorm horizon from ten separate locations, covering a strike length of over 2,250 meters (1.4 miles). Assay results from select samples returned copper and silver values grading up to 6.26-percent and 8.63 oz/t, respectively, with many more samples returning grades comparable to the nearby stratabound deposits at Troy, Rock Creek and Montanore in western Montana.

Timberline Director of Technical Services Paul Dircksen added, ``These results further demonstrate the potential to discover a world-class stratabound copper-silver deposit within the Coeur d`Alene Mining District. We are strongly encouraged by our findings at Snowstorm to date and intend to move the project forward as quickly as possible.``

Snowshoe and Lucky Calumet Adits

The Snowshoe and Lucky Calumet adits are located between the Snowstorm Mine and the Missoula Tunnel area. The adits were driven in a northeast direction, apparently targeting the Snowstorm mineralized horizon. Select samples from the two Snowshoe dumps and one of the two Lucky Calumet dumps returned the following values:

Sampling from the Lucky Calumet dumps showed that the mineralized zone was at least partially intercepted in the workings. Timberline geologists believe that the lower grades returned from the Lucky Calumet area may be due to extensive leaching of the dump samples, though it is possible that the mineralized zone was not completely intercepted.

Missoula Tunnel Adits

The Missoula Tunnel adits are located about 2,000 meters northwest of the Snowstorm Mine. Two exploration-type adits are located high on the mountain and were apparently designed to confirm the presence of the mineralized zone down dip from the surface outcrop. A larger operation was developed on the lowest level at the Missoula Tunnel #3, targeting a Coeur d`Alene-type silver vein. Select samples from the Missoula Tunnel dumps returned the following values:

An underground sample map of the Missoula Tunnel #3, completed by a previous operator, shows that a 20-meter zone of copper-silver mineralization was intersected by the underground workings. Channel sampling along a 7-meter interval of the zone graded 1.0-percent copper and 1.43 oz/t silver, indicating the presence of ore grade mineralization more than 700 meters down dip from surface outcrops near the upper adits. Surface and underground sampling in the Missoula Tunnel area provides important evidence of a large mineralized stratabound zone on the western edge of the project area, more than one mile northwest of the Snowstorm Mine.

Work plans for the 2005 exploration season at the Snowstorm Project include a drill program designed to test the continuity and grade of the mineralized horizon. The program is subject to receipt of necessary financing.

Venezuela to revoke some mining contracts -Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Venezuela plans to revoke some gold and diamond concessions and create a new state mining company as part of a push to increase government control over the sector, President Hugo Chavez said.

"We have decided to revoke a group of mining concessions given by past government and this government," Chavez said in a speech late Sunday night to hundreds of supporters gathered in front of the presidential palace to celebrate his return from a trip to the United Nations last week.

Among major foreign companies mining in Venezuela are Canada`s Crystallex (KRY.TO), Bolivar Gold (BGC.TO), U.S. firm Hecla (HL.N) and China`s Shandong Gold (600547.S). Hecla is the country`s largest and most active gold producer.

Hecla Terminates Guariche Transaction

COEUR D`ALENE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2005--Hecla Mining Company (NYSE:HL) today announced that it has terminated an agreement to acquire Triumph Gold Corporation`s interest in mineral concessions in the Guariche Mining District in Venezuela. Hecla decided to terminate the transaction because the companies failed to reach a consensus on certain conditions of closing.

Hecla President and Chief Executive Officer Phillips S. Baker, Jr., said, "We have a large number of excellent exploration targets and properties in Venezuela on which we are currently working. Our priorities lie with these prospective properties surrounding our La Camorra and Mina Isidora gold mines." Baker continued, "We`ve had very good results on several targets with our exploration drilling on our Block B property in Venezuela, and we continue to be enthusiastic about our presence and future growth in Venezuela."
