Punters feast on uranium cakeTony Grant-Taylor

AFTER doubling its share price earlier this week, uranium play Goldsearch came hurtling back to reality yesterday when its shares tumbled 10 per cent.

In the past 12 months any hint of a uranium find has turned penny dreadfuls into stockmarket darlings, supported by a strong spot price and likely changes to Australian Labor Party policy.
Goldsearch has been exploring around Mary Kathleen in Queensland's northwest, the site of the only uranium production in the state and a whiff of positive drilling results – even with a strong note of caution from the company – sent its shares skyrocketing from 4¢ to a high of 18¢.

But investors looking for a quick buck deserted the explorer yesterday on a mixed day for uranium stocks, sending the shares down to 13¢.

South Australian explorer UraniumSA soared more than 27 per cent to 54¢ while the likes of Deep Yellow, Energy Resources Australia and Uranium Exploration all fell.

Despite the volatility in the fortunes of the hopefuls, the setting is a favourable one.

Resource Capital Research, which monitors uranium producers and explorers in Australia and Canada, believes the spot price for the commodity will jump from the current $US70 a pound to $US90/lb by the middle of the year.

And it is forecasting a price of $US115/lb by September 2008.

RCR monitors 65 Australian junior uranium explorers and 92 Canadian juniors.

In its December quarter report, it said shares in its Australian juniors, as a group, were up 53 per cent in the previous three months and were 186 per cent ahead for the year.

Its portfolio of Canadian companies was up 40 per cent in three months and 143 per cent for the year.

While almost anyone who waved a

geiger counter over some ground and came up with a few clicks has seen plenty of investor interest, top of the Australian stocks have been those with advanced projects.

And these are the companies likely to retain their warm glow – with many of their less advanced counterparts probably destined, like the majority of junior explorers, to eventually fade from view.

Paladin Resources and Summit Resources were two of the 2006 market winners, with Summit shares up 436 per cent for the year while Paladin up 351 per cent .

For the time being new production by Australian companies has to come from offshore because of the ALP's no new mines policy.

But with new Federal ALP leader Kevin Rudd promising a change of policy at this year's party conference, that may soon not be a hurdle, despite continued opposition in some states, particularly WA.

ABN Amro analysts believe that will favour Australian uranium miners with advanced projects in South Australia and Queensland.

SA Premier Mike Rann supports the expansion of uranium mining while Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has said he will abide by the decision of the party's conference in April.

"We believe a change in policy would lead to a re-rating of the Australian uranium explorers and potentially to further consolidation of the sector," ABN said in its December report. "In our view, those explorers with advanced projects will be in the best position to benefit from a potential change in policy."

Most of the world's major uranium producers are currently selling their product at about $US20/lb under long-term contracts and are still making money so it is easy to see why a company that might be able to settle sales at close to today's prices could be extremely attractive.

RCR said the shares of Australian companies with advanced projects, which have a chance of tapping into such high prices, were up by 399 per cent over the 12 months to November.

One major reason for the recent price spike was news in October that the world's largest uranium producer, Cameco, had suffered flooding at its Lake Cigar project in Canada.

RCR estimates this could put production from the rich underground mine back from 2008 to 2010.

Cigar Lake's reserves are said to grade as much as 19 per cent uranium, which compares with Energy Resources of Australia's Ranger operation, which graded 0.24 per cent and Olympic Dam – with Australia's largest uranium reserve, but where admittedly uranium is a by-product to copper/gold production – where the grade is about 0.045 per cent.

But the underlying reason for soaring prices is the burgeoning demand implied by increasing international commitments to nuclear power inspired more by soaring energy needs than concerns about global warming.

RCR said in the six months to November, planned and proposed new reactor numbers soared.

It said that at November 27, the number had reached 223, up 70 from the May figure. All of these may not go ahead, though no doubt others will be added to the list. RCR points out that the numbers imply enormous growth, with only 442 nuclear power reactors currently in operation.

China is now planning 63 new reactors, up from 24 in May, Russia 26, up from 9 and the US 23, up from 13 – making the question of whether Australia will ever go nuclear all but irrelevant to the country's explorers.

This perceived demand is likely to underpin a continued rash of uranium floats, following the torrent of hopefuls who came to market in 2006.

Deloitte's December IPO Report estimated that by 2006's end, 77 new resource companies would have joined the stock exchange list.

Energy floats, dominated by the uranium sector, would have accounted for 40 of those, raising $912 million.

Queensland has a number of long-known deposits and plenty of potential, given the lack of modern exploration activity until recently.

Summit holds the Valhalla, Skal and Andersons deposits in northwest Queensland – two of them in joint ventures with Valhalla Uranium, now controlled by Paladin.

Westmoreland is another long-known uranium area, which like Valhalla was discovered in the 1950s. It is now owned by Canada's Laramine Resources.

Ben Lomond, about 50km west of Townsville was discovered by France's Total in 1975 – and it was almost mined in the 1980s.

But as with other ventures across the country it fell foul of low prices and the ALP's anti-uranium mining stance.

It is now owned by Mega Uranium, which also controls the small Maureen deposit near Georgetown, which was once to be developed in association with Ben Lomond.

Some of the plethora of other uranium hopefuls include Agincourt, whose Centipede project is in WA, Arafura Resources, with Lagoon Creek in the Northern Territory and Rio Tinto subsidiary ERA which has a huge resource at its Ranger mine in the NT.
