Marathon Resources is concentrating primarily on its advanced uranium-REE-polymetallic deposit located in the Northern Flinders Ranges, covered by Exploration License 3258. The Company has recently completed the first phase of a comprehensive study of an extensive drill-hole data base which was the result of exploration of this area by previous tenement holders. The tectogenetic based study, carried out in conjunction with consultants from the Economic Geology Centre of the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow, Poland, led to a 3D model of the Mt Gee deposit, the largest presently known deposit in the mineralised system covered by the tenement.

Other exploration less advanced tenements are located in the highly prospective Gawler Craton and in the Adelaide Geosyncline (geographically the Flinders Ranges). Western Victorian tenements are located within the Moyston Fault Zone, south of the important gold mining centre of Stawell.

The tenements the Company is exploring are :

      Adelaide Geosyncline
Marathon’s tenements in the Adelaide Geosyncline display different geological settings and exploration potential. Historically, this area has undergone intensive exploration with numerous discoveries of uranium, gold, copper and lead-zinc. Aside from the advanced uranium project at the Company’s Paralana / Mt Gee tenement, the Company tenements in the Adelaide Geosyncline/Flinders Ranges are at a relatively early stage.

The Mt Gee tenement in the Paralana Fault/Arkaroola region of the North Flinders Ranges displays uranium rich metalliferous mineralisation and has been intensely explored in the past, particularly for uranium. Marathon has carried out an extensive review of previous exploration data and has developed a 3D model of a world class uranium-REE-polymetallic ore system, drawing on the Company’s in house tectogenetic analysis and the expertise of consultants from the Economic Geology Centre of the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow, Poland. Marathon has also assayed in full and analysed the core from a 636 metre hole drilled by the Company’s subsidiary in 2002. The results from that drilling demonstrated that uranium mineralisation is continuous from surface to the bottom of the hole, supporting Marathon’s model of the 11-12 km long Paralana Ore System.

The Pinda Springs tenement in the northern central Flinders Ranges is located in the vicinity of Blinman, a known and historic copper mining town, and Beltana, known historically and more recently from spectacular intersections of Zn by Perilya (including 19 metres 41.2%, 18 metres 42.5%) with a current resource estimation of 941,000 tonnes at 31% Zn (Louthean 2004). The Pinda Springs tenement has never been drilled. It displays, however, significant assay results, particularly for base metal and copper from the surface sampling program. This tenement requires geological and geophysical surveys prior to tectogenetic exploration modelling, target generation and follow up drilling.

The Company's Mongolata tenement includes historic gold mining, with some prospector type mining of very high-grade pods continuing to date. An average of 45g/t of gold is on record. This tenement is prospective for gold and possibly for copper. In relation to this tenement, certain geological relationships can be drawn with the historic Burra copper deposit/mine located to the west, in proximity to the tenement. The Company’s database indicates geophysical anomalism and a geological environment favourable for mineralisation in the central and eastern part of the tenement (near the White Dam Granitoid body). The Gawler Craton
The Gawler Craton is the host for WMC’s Olympic Dam, a giant iron oxide Cu-Au-U deposit. This deposit is eighth largest copper deposit in the world, producing about 1.5% of the world’s refined copper, and on of the largest uranium deposit, containing some 38% of the known world reserves. The recent discovery, by the BHP/Minotaur Joint Venture, of a smaller but similar in style gold-copper ore system at Prominent Hill, is indicative of the prospectivity of the province. Some other deposits have also been identified in the past, including a first class gold deposit now mined out at Tarcoola and the more recently discovered Challenger gold deposit, now undergoing mining. Other new gold prospects are under intensive exploration and will possibly prove economic, eg, Tunkillia (Helix Resources) and Barns (Adelaide Resources/Newmont Mining JV). However, the Gawler Craton remains under-explored with further potential for large metalliferous deposits.

Marathon’s tenements within the Gawler Craton are localised in strategic ground displaying geological environments similar to those which host major ore bodies. These areas, prospective for massive/very large bulk IOCG and other mineralisation, are Coondambo and Mulga Well, near Glendambo, and Mabel Creek and Woorong Creek, in Joint Venture with Minotaur Resources, north of Coober Pedy in the northern Gawler Craton. At this stage, the Company has advanced exploration at Coondambo, where significant gravity, magnetic and tectonic settings favourable for mineralisation have been identified. These anomalies will be drill tested immediately upon completion of a preliminary exploration program. Surrounding this area, the Mulga Well tenement extends along a regional scale tectonic structure/lineament and covers a specific area of the Gawler Craton exhibiting convergence of the eastern end of the Harris Greenstone Belt, prospective for gold, copper, gold-copper and nickel. This is underexplored ground, which requires more geophysical work prior to exploration concept implementation and drill target generation.
      Moyston Fault Zone
This fault is a deep rooted tectonic feature favourable for a variety of mineralisation styles. This structure separates two geological domains, a typical South Australian Delamerian Fold Belt to the west and a classical Victorian Goldfields domain of the Lachan Fold Belt to the east.

The Company is exploring two tenements in this area of western Victoria. These are Kalymna and Genlyle, located within and in the eastern proximity of the Moyston Fault Zone, both covered by a relatively thin sequence of younger sediments. The Company is targeting gold and copper as well as other styles of metalliferous mineralisation, as the area shows potential for gold-copper and nickel mineralisation, all associated with the development of the Moyston Fault Zone. A circular aeromagnetic anomaly in the Glenlyle tenement indicates anomalous copper mineralisation, possibly similar to the ‘Victor 1’ bulk copper prospect located to the south of Glenlyle. Marathon has developed an exploration concept and model for this area and has carried out geophysical studies and a first phase of drilling to test the concept. A second phase of drilling will finalise testing of the ground.

      COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENTS OFFICE
      AUSTRALIAN STOCK EXCHANGE
      ASX CODE MTN
      PARALANA MINERAL SYSTEM
SIGNIFICANT INTERCEPTS FROM DRILLING AT MT GEE
      UPDATE OF CURRENT RESOURCE DRILLING
Marathon Resources is pleased to announce that recent drilling at Mt Gee has intersected significant
uranium mineralisation in the western part of the deposit. The Mt Gee deposit is part of the11-12 km
NE extending uranium-rich Paralana Mineral System within Marathon’s 100% owned EL 3258
      (Figure 1).
Downhole gamma logging results from RC06MN22 and another 12 gamma logged holes of the Mt
Gee drilling program (see Summary of Intercepts in the table below) demonstrate the presence of high
grade mineralisation and significant thickness of intersections, including:
      RC06MN17: 98 to 128m: 30m @ 0.08% eU3O8
      Including 98 to 104m: 6m @ 0.15% eU3O8
      114 to 118m: 4m @ 0.22% eU3O8
      RC06MN21: 171 to 188m: 17m @ 0.07% e U3O8
      Including 171 to 179m: 8m @ 0.11% eU3O8
      RC06MN22: 153 to 230m: 77m @ 0.12% eU3O8
      Including 174 to 185m: 11m @ 0.16% eU3O8
      204 to 208m: 4m @ 0.19% eU3O8
      RC06MN25: 113 to 182m: 69m @ 0.07% eU3O8
      Including 117 to 182m: 5m @ 0.14% eU3O8
It should be emphasised that these results are preliminary and the gamma logging will be
confirmed by geochemical analysis. The gamma tool used in the logging program was
calibrated at the Adelaide Model test pits prior to the commencement of logging.
Analysis of the new drilling data demonstrates that increased thickness and high grade zones
are focused approximately 150 m north-west of the area identified by Exoil, CRA (Rio Tinto)
and Goldstream Resources in their exploration drilling programs in the past (Figure 2). Results
of those programs yielded the chemical analyses indicated below:
      Exoil MG101: 169.2 to 210.3m 41.1m @ 0.16% U3O8
      CRA DD91GE33: 234.0 to 281.1m 47.1m @ 0.16% U3O8
      Goldstream PD99GE03: 148.0 to 196.0m 48.0m @ 0.17% U3O8
The new Marathon’s drill hole intersections suggest a much larger extent of high grade and very
thick mineralisation along the north-west trend, as previously interpreted based on historical
drilling results, and the results are consistent with the Company’s exploration and resource model
      of the deposit.
The purpose of the current drilling is to upgrade the resource definition of the Mt Gee deposit from
inferred to indicated and/or measured category. During the period 17.11 - 18.12.2006, the first 18
drill holes, all located in the western part of the deposit, for about 3,500 m RC drilling of the 93

      3. Der Junge hält selber Acclaim.

Resource Capital research sieht z.B.

1/ Marathon`s resource model up to date looks pretty conservative to me. It seems like they`ve excluded some large areas of former drilling from the resource calculation because the drilling density was not great enough to include this area, despite indications of mineralisation. This is one of the aims of the current drilling

      China's uranium rushMandi Zonneveldt

Article from: Font size: + -
      Send this article: Print Email

CHINA'S rush on a rich uranium prospect in the Northern Territory has signalled the start of a second wave.

The NT Government confirmed this week that six Chinese companies were among more than 40 vying for a licence to explore the Pamela and Angela uranium prospects south of Alice Springs.
Chinese investment in Australian resources is by no means new. For 20 years, the Chinese have quietly staked their claim on Australia's iron ore reserves.

But a new vigour has emerged, marked by heightened activity at the junior end of the iron ore sector last year. And uranium appears to be the next target.

If any one of the Chinese companies is successful, Pamela and Angela will be the first uranium project in Australia wholly owned by the Chinese.

China first signalled its interest in Australia's vast uranium reserves last year, when the Chinese government-owned SinoSteel Corporation paid $40 million for a 60 per cent stake in two outback South Australian projects owned by PepinNini minerals.

CITIC, another state-owned Chinese behemoth, which is known to have considered a bid for WMC Resources and its Olympic Dam mine, has since built stakes in uranium explorers :D Marathon Resources :D and Southern Gold. It also has a stake in Queensland miner Macarthur Coal.

CITIC was the first Chinese company to invest here, taking a 10 per cent stake in the Portland Aluminium smelter in 1986.

China's Ministry of Metallurgical Industry (now SinoSteel) followed in 1987 with the $420 million Channar iron ore joint venture.

Melbourne lawyer Robin Chambers, former general counsel for CRA (now Rio Tinto), represented the Chinese Government in the negotiations with Hamersley Iron, which have set the stage for the new wave of investment.

He said a key issue was whether to have a long-term contract or form a joint venture.

CITIC turned a $17.9 million profit from its stake in the Portland smelter (now 22.5 per cent). It also made $12 million from its direct stake in Macarthur Coal's Coppabella mine.

Yancoal, a subsidiary of China's largest coalminer Yanzhou Coal, is expected to turn a profit this year following its revival of the Southland colliery in the Hunter Valley – a wholly owned venture.

Chinese oil giant CNOOC will also start reaping rewards this year from its 25 per cent stake in the China LNG joint venture, formed as part of a $25 billion deal to sell gas from the North- West Shelf to China. And in northwest Queensland Chalco is working out the feasibility of mining bauxite at Aurukun.

Figures on the extent of Chinese investment are hard to come by. In 2004-05, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved 39 applications from China to invest in the mineral exploration and development industries.

FIRB has not yet published figures for 2005-06.

At December 31, 2004, Chinese investment in Australia totalled $1.98 billion, but the Australian Bureau of Statistics no longer releases figures on Chinese direct investment "for confidentiality reasons".

Chalco has since lodged a bid to develop a $3 billion bauxite mine on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.

Chinese companies have also agreed to invest more than $2 billion in iron ore projects, mostly in Western Australia.

      Zur Uranium Hype in Australien

      Bloodbath to come over uranium
      PURE SPECULATION
      Robin Bromby, The Australian
      January 06, 2007

FIRST punter's gong for 2007 goes to the uranium frenzy surrounding Goldsearch, although its partner near the old Mary Kathleen uranium mine, Central West Gold, faded earlier as all the day traders went for the main stock being talked up in the chatrooms. Did someone know something, or was it a pump-and-dump scam? We'll probably never know. So much for transparency.
David Reed, who now heads Reed Resources, has seen all this before. He started in broking in 1963 (and eventually would be known for running broker Eyres Reed). Six years later, the Poseidon nickel boom of 1969 took off and reason went out the window. He's predicting - as with nickel 36 years ago - there will be a lot of investor bloodshed before this uranium thing is over.
Reed reminds us that uranium is one of the most frequently occurring minerals, being found in almost all rock and soil but not too often in mineable quantities. Having looked at some of the new uranium companies, he reckons there's more uranium in the soil under Kalgoorlie's Hannan Street than there is in many of the hyped prospects.

Back in the mid-1990s, he was chairman of Noble Resources which had a few uranium targets in its portfolio. Getting his timing wrong by about 10 years, he changed the name in 1997 to Uranium Australia and got into joint ventures with France's Cogema and Paladin Resources. There was no uranium recovery then, as we know, and Reed moved on once the well-known Danny Hill became involved, the company by then having changed to Black Range Minerals and switched to nickel laterites.

But he made this point: the state and territory environmental agencies were hotbeds of anti-uranium types; when he left Black Range, there were some Northern Territory uranium lease applications that had been awaiting approval for 14 years. Reed believes nothing will have changed and, regardless of Labor policies, the bureaucrats will do their best to delay and derail uranium projects.

JUST ask David Harley what it's like dealing with the environmental people in Western Australia. It's coming up to four years since his Gunson Resources started the environmental approvals process, and it wants to mine zircon, not uranium.

The Coburn deposit, 400km north of the Eneabba heavy minerals operation run by Iluka Resources, was discovered in 2000. When the zircon price spiked in 2003, Gunson put together the bankable feasibility study and the matter was first referred to the Environmental Protection Authority, it then taking two years to meet all the requirements for the company's 220-page document for the public review process. This covered all the flora and fauna issues; you name the species, Gunson studied it. Then came the inevitable appeals against the project approval.

Gunson is about to lodge its 10th - yes, 10th - environmental management plan which will go to the Department of Environment and Conservation on Wednesday with approval expected in March.

But it should be worth it. When mining starts in mid-2008, and assuming zircon prices hold, Gunson will be shipping about $30 million worth of zircon a year, with ilmenite and rutile by-product revenue on top.

NEW floats keep coming at a dizzying pace. Calling an IPO Moggie Mining at least gets you noticed, although it does invite jokes about dead-cat bounces.

The company, which is looking for $3.5 million, will explore for diamonds, gold, copper and nickel around Greenvale, inland from Townsville. The name was decided upon very late one night at the Greenvale Hotel. In the sober light of the next morning, it was thought something conventional might be better, but it was soon found the name was catching on. Will the IPO?

Another that caught our eye was 3D Resources, whose prospectus for $3 million will be available from Monday. MD Craig Rugless has spent years collecting properties in the East Kimberley region. One is being explored in a joint venture with Sally Malay Mining, while another is near the zinc-rich Koongie prospect owned by Anglo Australian Resources. 3D also comes to market with the Cosmo Newbery gold project near Laverton. The former WMC did a fair bit of drilling around that part of the world in the late 1990s, but 3D's tenements seem not to have seen any recent work done.

MOST punters never mention the big losses, but Fat Prophets has told all in a year-end statement to clients. And there's nothing like having a nosey at someone else's track record.

Not bad in FP's case. Of its 49 "buy" recommendations in 2006, 41 came good. Best buy was Fox Resources, up 500 per cent from the 30c purchase price. Fox certainly proved wrong all the naysayers who thought it was mad taking over the closed Radio Hill nickel mine. Since then, copper and zinc have been added and, this week, Fox went into gold with Prime Minerals.

Other good moves include Jabiru Metals, up 300 per cent, Terramin Australia, up 434.9 per cent, and Bannerman Resources, up 212.6 per cent. But Territory Iron is sitting at the buy price, while the biggest losers for FP were Integra Mining, down 52 per cent, and Enterprise Energy, down 51.7 per cent.

The Australian implies no recommendations regarding any of the stocks mentioned. The author does not own shares in any of the mentioned securities.

      Dazu kommt: Eine SXR produziert.

30,000 tonnes of uranium can't be all bad. $6,500 million worth in Australian dollars if my back of the cigarette packet maths is correct. 5th largest uranium deposit in Australia and it's in South Australia. No problems here. Resource currently being upgraded by current mega-huge drilling program AND feasibility study on track and should be announced soon. Chinese govt. is a shareholder..... No wonder MTN has tripled in price in 3 months....and still rising....all time high, just yesterday....

      http://www.canadianinsider.com/coReport/allTransactions.php?…

      http://www.elororesources.com/

...Conquest - that's typical bot trading, algo trading, whatever you want to call it. It's Direct Market Access (DMA) algorithmic trading done by some of the big brokers operating their own accounts, not their clients' accounts. They have at least two computers, usually at different IP addresses, one buying and one selling, often to each other. They walk the price either down or up, depending on what their aim is. It's usually down, so they hit stoplosses and cause the cascade effect that then causes the price to plummet, whereupon the computer bots start buying back in and the price goes back up to where it just came from.

See it all the time on PDN, SMM, PSA, and many others. Brokers don't have a minimum parcel size, and they don't have to pay brokerage, of course.

And yes - it's perfectly legal, even though many, including me, think it's immoral and manipulative.

      ...

Ah Ha, thankyou, I think that we night have seen some of this hanky panky trading yesterday with MTN, it took about 200,000 shares to smash it down to $2.45 and about 800,000 were bought back to about the $2.96 level.
      ...

Conquest - I don't hold MTN currently, but I have it on my watch screen in ProTrader. If you have access to the intraday chart, you'll see the pattern. There are about 10 sudden drops during today's trading, with a climb back fairly rapidly after each one. If you correlate that with the course of sales data, you can see where the bots have walked the price down one tick at a time until the stoploss cascade kicks in. Then there are several parcels of hundreds or thousands of shares traded, the buying bot soaking up most of them, and then it keeps on buying until the price gets back to where it was then stops. An hour or so later - it happens all over again.

As I said - I regard that as blatant manipulation, but nothing can be done to stop it. The only advantage is that if you see it happening (you need a realtime trading platform like ProTrader, WebIress, eTrade, etc) then you can take advantage of it to buy low. One person I know actively watches for just that sort of activity, and trades the intraday dips. He will buy when it starts to climb up after the sudden dip, then sell when it flattens off. Often several times in the day. And he makes good money doing it too!

      Hallo bmann025,

SECOND BATCH GAMMA RESULTS CONFIRM HIGH GRADE URANIUM
ZONES FOR MARATHON’S MT GEE PROJECT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

New gamma results from a second batch of holes drilled into South Australia’s promising Mt Gee uranium project have confirmed significant intercepts in the western part of the deposit within
Marathon Resources Ltd’s 100% owned EL3258 tenement in the Northern Flinders Ranges (Fig. 1).
The new results add to a similar outcome reported last month for downhole gamma logging of the first batch of 13 holes – part of a 93-hole infill drilling program by Marathon at Mt Gee, of which 44 holes for 7,800m RC drilling has now been completed. (Fig. 2).
Marathon also reported today it had received the laboratory assay results from the samples of the first batch of 13-holes, with significant assays including:
      RC06MN017: 111-127m: 16m @ 0.18% U3O8
      Including 113-118m 5m @ 0.41% U3O8
      RC06MN025: 106-180m: 74m @ 0.08% U3O8
      Including 172-180m 8m @ 0.11% U3O8
Marathon’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr John Santich, said today the Company was pleased with the latest outcomes, as the results, in particular from RC06MN017 and RC06MN025, further demonstrated the presence of high grade zones and significant thickness of intersections in the western part of the deposit which was the subject of the Company’s main drill focus on the tenement until last week.
The drilling program is designed to upgrade Mount Gee’s Inferred Resource of 45.6 million tonnes of uranium mineralisation, averaging 0.068% U3O8 for about 31,200 tonnes contained uranium oxide (about 69 million pounds of contained U3O8), into Indicated and Measured categories.

      Deadline extension for Marathon

Article from: Font size: + -
      Send this article: Print Email
A takeover offer for Marathon Resources has been extended again, despite being more than $3 below the current share price.

The Marathon board rejected the $33.4 million offer from Crosby Capital Partners in September last year saying it was "totally inadequate".
Marathon is now worth $170.8 million.

But in extending the bid on behalf of Crosby, representative Buttermere Australia said yesterday it realised its 68c-a-share bid was well out of the money.

Marathon's flagship asset is its Mt Gee uranium project in the state's Far North.

Fat Prophets recently rated Marathon Resources a "buy", despite the Adelaide-based uranium explorer tripling in value in recent months.

Fat Prophets resources analyst Gavin Wendt said the two things that set Marathon apart were the location of its main project in uranium mining-friendly South Australia and the fact that it has a large, identified uranium resource.

Mr Wendt recommended Marathon as a "buy" at about $2.80, compared with yesterday's $3.82.

The offer will now close on May 4.

Gemeinsam gegen Kohle und für Uran?

      [...]

      Quelle: http://aktien-blog.com/kohle-uran-hedge-fonds.html

Marathon battle - the rules of engagement
      Kevin Andrusiak
      March 16, 2007

RULE number one in the mining game when a hostile suitor springs a surprise bid on your boardroom table is to get on the phone and tell shareholders to sit tight.
Rule number two is make sure you keep pumping out some decent drilling results in what is thinly veiled as a two-fingered salute to your predator.

That's exactly what uranium explorer Marathon Resources has done in a move which would only add to the blood pressure of the bid plotters at Crosby Capital Partners.

But before we get into the drill results, let's go back to July 5 last year when Crosby launched its takeover for Marathon.

The Hong Kong-based company at the time said there was little to like about the aspiring junior, but even so the company was worth an offer of 68c a share.

Privately, many sniggered at the offer - which was made through Crosby's subsidiary Buttermere _ and came in at a small premium to where the share price was trading at the time.

Marathon shares tracked from a close of 55c the previous day to a close of 76c the day Buttermere went public with the offer.

Buttermere argued that Marathon was not a liquid stock and without it, there was no surety shareholders could easily sell on the market.

They also said Marathon's Mt Gee project in South Australia was no certainty of ever getting up and running because it was in the lowest confidence category.

But since the bid was launched, Marathon's share price has not looked back.

Nine months had passed and Buttermere had no takers. Little surprise given that Marathon's stock price jumped through the $4 hurdle in November.

As the uranium frenzy grew, Buttermere proved stubborn enough to keep its 68c a share bid on the table by moving to extend the offer a number of times.

If the industry wasn't laughing before, they would have been rolling around the ground when Buttermere sheepishly upped the offer last week to $3.52 a share and added "the underlying fundamentals" of Marathon had not changed.

In response, Marathon chairman Peter Williams said on Wednesday that the board's position had not changed. Shareholders should continue to reject the bid.

However the board would mull over the new offer and release a new supplementary target statement "within the next week".

Which brings us to today and the new drilling results from Mt Gee which will surely be a factor in Marathon boardroom deliberations over the new bid.

"Marathon is pleased to announce the intersection of further significant uranium mineralisation in the western part of its 100 per cent owned Mt Gee deposit in South Australia," the opening line to its Australian Stock Exchange announcement read.

"The Mt Gee deposit, with its Inferred Resource of 45.5 million tonnes of uranium mineralisation averaging 0.068 per cent U3O8, or 69 million pounds of contained U308, is one of Australia's largest undeveloped uranium deposits."

The new hits were outside of the defined resource area and include 16 metres at 0.10 per cent U3O8 between 23m to 39m down hole RC07MN057.

"These results are further confirmation of Marathon's deposit model and the extension of the resource to the south and east of the previously defined resource area," Marathon chief executive Dr John Santich said.

The results still need to be verified by geochemical analysis.

The market responded by pushing Marathon's share price 1c higher to $3.70 which was a tad disappointing given the massive bounce in the market.

However Fat Prophets believes that a rival to Buttermere's bid is brewing.

"Given the way uranium prices are edging ever higher, along with the unprecedented level of corporate interest in the uranium sector in Australia, we believe members should maintain their position in Marathon," analyst Gavin Wendt said.

SA talkfest on uranium draws 350
      March 20, 2007 01:15am

THE world's largest uranium producer, Cameco, will be represented at an Adelaide event this week.

In a sign of the international interest in Australia's uranium potential, the number of delegates to the Paydirt 2007 Uranium Conference has almost doubled to 350 since last year's conference and will include a Who's Who of Australia's early-stage uranium explorers.
Also present will be delegates from China, South Africa, Europe and North America. Presentations to be given will include those from:

MINISTER for Industry, Tourism and Resources Ian Macfarlane.

PROFESSOR Peter Johnson, who was part of the Federal Government's uranium mining, processing and nuclear energy review taskforce.

AUSTRALIAN Uranium Association director Michael Angwin.

NUCLEAR Energy Corporation of South Africa chief executive Rob Adam, representing the state-owned specialist in nuclear energy research and development.

While the Thursday-Friday conference has attracted many companies keen to promote their prospects, it also will be a forum for deal making.

Last year's event was attended by Chinese investor CITIC's Australian arm which later invested in South Australian companies Southern Uranium and Marathon Resources.

Interest in uranium mining has surged in recent years, with the price rising from as low as $US9.70 a pound five years ago to $US91 now.

The contentious mineral's price growth has been driven by rising interest in building nuclear reactors around the world as an alternative to plants which generate more carbon dioxide emissions. Stocks of nuclear fuel have also declined as stores of decommissioned weapons-grade material starts to run out.

The conference will not have any sessions open to the public free of charge. Copies of presentations will be available for purchase from conferencer organiser Paydirt, a West Australian company.

China plans national reserve of natural uranium
      (Xinhua)
      Updated: 2007-04-18 16:10

China plans to set up a national strategic reserve of natural uranium as part of a five-year plan for its nuclear industry, according to a document released by the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense.

The document, entitled the 11th Five-Year Plan for the Nuclear Industry, says China will encourage careful exploitation of domestic uranium deposits and improve its domestic production capacity.

China also hopes to increase international cooperation on uranium exploitation and import more uranium from the international market to enrich its stockpile, it says.

The reserve will be linked up with a commercial stockpile system to ensure an adequate uranium supply for electricity generation, it says.

China began developing its nuclear power industry in the late 1980s to help ease an energy bottleneck.

China's State Council has adopted a strategy to ensure the nation's total installed capacity of nuclear power reaches 40 million kilowatts by 2020, accounting for four percent of the country's total electric power.

In 2006, China's installed capacity of nuclear power reached 6.85 million kilowatts, accounting for only 1.1 percent of the country's total installed power capacity.

MARATHON Resources could be staring down the barrel of another takeover bid, or conversely have two very powerful white knights after moves on its share register.

In separate lodgings on the Australian Securities Exchange, Talbot Group Holdings and Chinese investment group CITIC Australia yesterday both announced they had moved to a 19.9 per cent stake in the Adelaide-based uranium exploration company.
The companies, which have made a number of other investments in the past year, now control almost 40 per cent of the company. The 19.9 per cent figure is important because it is the point beyond which a full takeover bid must be launched.

The move also blocks Crosby Capital Partners' long-running takeover bid, which at $3.52 per share is well out of the money.

The changes were each made up of a mix of the exercise of options and the purchase of shares.

The companies also released a memorandum of understanding stating they would discuss Marathon matters, but were not involved in any link related to the company.

Marathon shares closed steady at $5.50 yesterday.

The management of Marathon, CITIC and the Talbot Group could not be contacted late yesterday.

On Monday, Marathon chairman Peter Williams reiterated the board's rejection of the Crosby Capital Partners offer.

Previously, the Talbot Group and CITIC held 8.8 per cent and 8.38 per cent of the stock in Marathon respectively.

Marathon shares have been on a steep trajectory for the past year as the company progressed its Mt Gee uranium deposit towards commercialisation - a decision which has not yet been made.

      PROJECT ANALYSIS
      Australia’s top 12 uranium projects
Mineweb’s Australian commentator, Ross Louthean, with more than 30 years involvement in the sector behind him, picks his top 12 up and coming projects in the ultra-hot uranium sector.

      Author: Ross Louthean
      Posted: Friday , 11 May 2007

      PERTH -

What are the top 12 uranium projects in Australia? Several had been sleeping for decades and were re-awakened when the new uranium rush began in the country in the past two years. Mineweb's Australian correspondent who has followed the downs and ups for uranium exploration over the years filed this summary listing after consulting two old hands in the uranium sector.

Political differences will need to be addressed before some of these will see the light of day, but the momentum seems to be moving in favour of new uranium mine construction, although this may take longer in some States than others.

Four Mile (SA). Quasar Resources, subsidiary of Heathgate Resources 75%, Alliance Resources 25% An initial resource for part of Four Mile West was 3.9 Mt at 0.37% U3O8, for 32 million lbs contained U3O8. Grade and roll front-style deposits should provide excellent economics, given that Heathgate's Beverley mine is 10 km away. Alliance said drilling was confined to about 1 km2 covered by this resource statement is within more than 5 km2 of potential mineralisation.
Honeymoon (SA). Uranium One's proposed In Situ Leach (ISL) mine has key permitting from the SA government and was slotted for development in 2009 but may now dovetail into Uranium One's broader global planning - after its acquisition of assets in Kazakhstan.
Jabiluka (NT). Energy Resources of Australia, controlled by Rio Tinto plc. One of Australia's long-mothballed deposits with reserves of 12.8 Mt at 0.52% U3O8 and a measured-to-inferred 21.07 Mt at 0.46% U3O8, plus a 1 million oz gold deposit. ERA's need to streamline development, subject to Aboriginal landowner sanctions, may have eased with the higher uranium price making Ranger's vast lower grade stockpiles economic to work too.
Kintyre (WA). Rio Tinto may target a 2010-11 development with strong support from the local Martu Aboriginal people. Rio Tinto has outlined significant scope for other metals. The measured to inferred resource of 12.7 Mt at 2.75 kg/t for a contained 34,924t of U3O8 is considered ultra conservative by many observers.
Bigryli (NT). Energy Metals Ltd 53.3%, Paladin Resources 41.7%, Southern Cross Exploration 5%. There is an inferred-indicated resource of 14.3 M lbs of U3O8 and 16.3 M lb of vanadium pentoxide. The JV began a major new drilling programme in May, focussing mainly on targets outside the resource envelope. The JV has a good working relationship with local Aborigines.
Yeelirie (WA). A mothballed WMC Resources advanced project from the 1980s now in BHP Billiton's hands. BHP has remained low profile but this is Australia's technically best-packaged deposit for development. Yeelirrie has an indicated 35 Mt at 1.5 kg/t for 52,500t of U3O8.
Skal-Valhalla (Qld). Now controlled by half owner Paladin Resources which has an advanced takeover of partner Summit Resources. Skal has an indicated-inferred 7.712 Mt at 1.095 kg/t for 8,4506 of U3O8 while Valhalla has 33.3 Mt at 0.781 kg/t for 26,040t contained U3O8. French utility Areva is in the mix with an offtake-equity arrangement with Summit that is yet to be resolved.
Crocker Well (SA). PeninNini Minerals Ltd-Sinosteel Corporation. The most advanced of this JV's Curnamona Basin JV with resource of 19.8 million lbs of U3O8and an ambitious target of development within three years. Politics are highly favourable, being in SA and in a region of high unemployment.
Centipede (WA). Nova Energy's most advanced deposit in the Lake Way area near parent Oxiana Ltd's Wiluna gold mine. This shallow, flat lying and soft dig deposit has appealing economics but must await the eventual departure or softening anti-uranium stance of Premier Allan Carpenter. The inferred resource is 7 Mt at 0.63 kg/t for a contained 4,410t of U3O8.
Ben Lomond (Qld). Canada's Mega Uranium gained this project through takeover of Australian company Redport. This long mothballed target was established by a group of international utilities and has an indicated 1.328 Mt at 0.27% U3O8 for 7.9 M lbs U3O8, and an inferred 602,585t at 0.21% for 2.8 M lbs U3O8.
Mount Gee (SA). Marathon Resources has undertaken more detailed exploration on this old discovery with consultants recommending an underground mining operation in the North Flinders Ranges. Mt Gee now has an inferred 45.5 Mt at 0.068% U3O8, or 69 M lbs of contained U3O8.
Mulga Rocks (WA). Prospector Michael Fewster won a court hearing in early May for full ownership of this remote Mulga Rock project which had been a 1980s discovery by PNC of Japan. Fewster has links with Perth-finance group LinQ Resources Fund and another company. Uranium Equities Ltd which had claimed 50% but Supreme Court Judge Le Miere had said there was no enforceable contract with Fewster. Late 1990s data shows that the Emperor Shogun and Ambassador deposits had a non-JORC Code 10.8 Mt at 1.2 kg/t for 13,000t of contained U3O8.

      Running hot

With uranium explorers a dime a dozen these days, it's getting harder for punters to pick out the few available gems.

But Deutsche Bank and Fat Prophets both agree Marathon Resources has the right stuff.

Marathon owns the Mt Gee deposit in South Australia, the one state where you can actually mine uranium.

It has an inferred resource of 31,200 tonnes, making it one of the largest unmined deposits in Australia.

Marathon is also a proven takeover target, although Hong Kong investment bank Crosby Capital Partners' $3.52 a share offer which is set to close next month is well below the uranium company's current share price. Marathon shares closed 15c higher at $6.15 yesterday.

Some strong resource drilling results this week were enough to make Deutsche analyst Brendan James confident Mt Gee was one of Australia's "premium uranium resources" and to rate the company a "buy".

Fat Prophets analyst Gavin Wendt agreed Marathon was one of the best investments in the ultra-hot sector.

"Unlike most of its junior rivals … Marathon has a high quality asset base and technical team," he said. "It is one of a handful of uranium companies that we currently follow and that can transform their potential into reality."

Wendt also warned his clients about the pitfalls of investing in fly-by-night uranium upstarts given the uranium bubble would ultimately burst.

"Certainly, the 'greater fool' theory is at work in the current climate," he said.

"That is, many investors know that their stocks are overvalued and overhyped when they buy them, but are happy to do so in the knowledge that they should be able to on-sell them to someone even more gullible at a higher price."

ASX RELEASE MARATHON ASX RELEASE MARATHON RESOURCESRESOAUSRXCREESLEASAESX REL
      MARATHON RESOURCES
ASX Release Wednesday, 27 June 2007 ASX Code MTN

TAKEOVER OFFER BY BUTTERMERE TO LAPSE
Buttermere Australia Pty Ltd (“Buttermere”) has notified Marathon Resources that after
seven extensions it proposes letting its offer lapse for Marathon Resources. The offer is
due to close at 7pm (Sydney time) on 4 July 2007.
Marathon looks forward to continuing its exploration and development program without the
need to divert resources to an unsolicited and opportunistic offer that significantly
undervalued the Company’s assets and future prospects.
Buttermere originally announced an offer of 68 cents per Marathon share on 6 July 2006
and subsequently increased that offer to $3.52 per Marathon share on 9 March 2007.
Marathon’s closing price of $6.27 on 26 June 2007 - the day Buttermere announced it
would not proceed with its Marathon offer - represents a premium of 822% to Buttermere’s
original offer and 78% to Buttermere’s revised offer.
Marathon’s share price has always traded at a premium to Buttermere’s offer price since
the date the offer was announced.
The significant difference between Marathon’s current market price and Buttermere’s
original and revised offer clearly reflects the total inadequacy of the takeover bid and
strongly supports the advice of the Marathon Board that shareholders reject the offer.
Despite the distraction of the Buttermere offer, the Marathon Board has, during the period
of the offer, focussed on developing Marathon’s assets for the benefit of all shareholders.
The Company undertook an extensive drilling program at Mt Gee, in South Australia’s far
north, engaged Hellman and Schofield to prepare a new resource calculation and raised
new capital via a share placement to Talbot Group Holdings Pty Ltd and CITIC Australia

      Hallo allerseits,

      · Warum so hoch?

      Marathon
While classed as a uranium explorer, the definition is not entirely accurate as Marathon holds one of the worlds more significant uranium deposits, Mt Gee, in South Australia’s Flinders

Rangers. Mt Gee contains over 29,000t of U3O8 (64 million pounds uranium), with the mineralogy being predominantly uraninite, and therefore easily extracted. However, being in South Australia’s Flinders Rangers, the project is classified under planning zone “Environmental Class A”. Under the South Australian Development Act of 1993, Consolidated on the 21st August 2003 by the Flinders Rangers council. Requirements for mining under Planning Zone Environmental Class A are detailed under Objective 3, which we have reproduced below. Objective 3: The retention and protection of the landscape from mining operations, andprospecting and exploring for new resources. Mining activities should only occur in the Environmental Class A Policy Area if the reserves of minerals are of paramount importance, not available elsewhere in the State, or their exploitation is in the State or national interest. If mining activities occur, they should be carried out with the minimum effect on the scenic and natural areas of the area. From Marathon’s Mt Gee scoping study, we believe the company is fulfilling the requirements of minimizing environmental effects. We also believe that in the pro-uranium mining State of South Australia that the project will be considered as being in the State’s interest. We also believe the company is progressing well with its community relations through the formation of a North Flinders Community Consultative Committee (NFCCC). The NFCCC comprises local members from the State and Federal Government (or their alternates) and representatives of local landowners, graziers, tourism operators and the indigenous community. The aim of the Committee is to act as a forum for the company and the local community to regularly meet and discuss progress at Mt Gee and any issues of concerns that may arise. The NFCCC will be chaired by Neil Andrew, the former Federal Speaker of the House of Representatives. Like all things dependent upon a political outcome, we believe there are no guarantees of the projects development, and while optimistic of development obviously see this as the greatest risk to the project. However, with a current market value of just A$2.55/lb U3O8 resource against recent sector acquisition’s pricing resources in excess of A$30/lb U3O8
resource (Paladin takeover of Summit Resources, SXR Uranium 1 takeover of UrAsia), we believe that a positive decision towards the development of Mt Gee will result in a significant
re-rating of the stock. Therefore, while the stock may be perceived as higher risk, we maintain our view that Marathon remains an attractive investment proposition, and should be a part of any uranium investor’s portfolio. Mt Gee Scoping Study Coffee Mining Pty Ltd conducted an initial scoping study, assessing the requirements for a 1000tpa U3O8 facility. The key points from the study are detailed below. The scoping study report recommends underground mining as the “best” solution from both an economic and environmental standpoint, with ore transported via a ‘gun-barrel
decline’ to a processing plant outside the area of environmental and social significance at Mt Gee.

      The scoping study assessed:
      • An operation processing approximately 1.5 million tonnes per annum at 760 ppm
      U3O8.
      • Production of about 900 tonnes per annum of U3O8 using conventional atmospheric
tank leaching (or slightly less using heap leaching).
      • A mine life of 13 years.

      Risks
Our valuations are derived via DCF calculations on life of mine and asset cashflows. Pure commodity plays, such as these, immediate influence stems from price movements driven by supply/demand dynamics. For most companies the A$ is the most relevant currency in terms of operating costs, particularly for ERA. As each company detailed in this document has projects in feasibility or the early stages of development, downside risk is present in the
form of budget increase, delays to schedules, or delay or the non-granting of mining approvals, which is particularly relevant to each of the uranium producers and developers detailed within this document. Company-specific risks: For ERA, further risks comes from its ability to gain traditional landholder approvals for the development of Jabiluka, and near-term production risks
associated with another heavy rain event in the approaching wet season. Paladin is exposed to Namibian exchange rate volatility with specific risks associated with its investment in the
high risk country, Malawi, and the present ban on uranium mining in Australia. Marathon’s additional risks include local landholder, or traditional owner objections, causing delays to the
development of Mt Gee. Whilst the deposit does not reside in the Flinders Ranges national park, we believe its location, along with the development being a uranium mine, could possibly result in a lengthening of the permitting process. Specific risks associated with Uranex include the continuation of Western Australia's no-uranium mines policy, causing delays to the development of Thatcher Soak. Additional risks result from the early stages of
exploration and resource definition at many of Uranex's prospective tenements.

Uranium mining in Flinders Ranges may be closer

Marathon Resources is hoping to mine uranium in the northern Flinders Ranges of SA by 2011.

      http://www.abc.net.au/news/maps/map.htm?lat=-30.4873&long=13…

An Adelaide-based resources company says it hopes to have an underground uranium mine in the northern Flinders Ranges by 2011.

Marathon Resources says a final scoping study of the Mount Gee deposit has found that an underground mine would produce about 900 tonnes of uranium annually.

An independent analysis of exploration results means the company has reduced its estimate of the resource from about 45.5 million tonnes to about 43 million tonnes.

Marathon chief executive Stuart Hall says the result is still positive.

"We are still talking about one of the three or four biggest resources in Australia and its location in South Australia which is one of the most supportive for mining development," he said.

MARATHON Resources is within weeks of signing a deal with a major mining contractor, which could cut years off the development of its Mt Gee uranium deposit.

Denis Wood, who was recently appointed to oversee the Mt Gee project in the northern Flinders Ranges, said yesterday he wanted to push the project faster to ensure it came online before some other projects which were in development, especially large overseas projects.

Mr Wood, speaking at the company's AGM in Adelaide, said he wanted the development timetable, which aims for first production in mid-2011, speeded up.

``I would like to see some acceleration of the process,'' he said. ``We are a bit short on some drilling results.''

Mr Wood said despite this, the company started detailed mine planning this week and would have a mine plan ready by the middle of next year.

The company also aimed to have a pre-feasibility study finished by that time, he said.

Mr Wood said the shortage of skilled mining engineers and similar professionals had led to a decision to partner with a mining contractor to speed up the development of Mt Gee.

"For a young company like Marathon to go out and pick up a suite of engineers would be no small task,'' he said.

On the other hand, a partnership with a large contractor would ``take years off our timetable'' he said.

Marathon chairman Peter Williams said the company had started a drilling campaign in October, in a bid to increase the current 42.8 million tonne uranium oxide resource at Mt Gee.

      Also, was tun ?
      Investiert bleiben, abwarten, hoffen.

Offensichtlich herrenlos. Von den Bohrtrupps schlicht vergessen. Was auch immer.

"The honourable Chris Schacht, a former Labour Federal Government Minister, has been appointed to the Board of Marathon Resources Limited.
For Marathon, this is a significant appointment which further expands the broad range of expertise on the Company´s Board, Marathon Resources Chairman, Mr Peter Williams, said today.
Chris Schacht is one of Australias most highly-respected political minds with vast international Government experience. We are absolutely delighted to have Chris join our team, he said."

      Also, etwas politische Unterstützung.

      Außerdem, wiederum aus hotcopper:
"Also encouraging signs from the west musgraves area where they are looking for gold nickel and Platinum groups and anything else that come up in the samples.
Also a gold venture in victoria as well.
So this marthon is not a purely Uranium company at all it has its fingers in many pies and growing a very strong director base."

      Aber gut, was soll´s.
