Noch was.

      Also,

Vignette Plans Alliance With Rational, IBM, Inktomi, Others
      By Jim Finkle

Austin, Texas, Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Web-software maker Vignette Corp. is in talks with at least 10 other companies to form an alliance that would jointly develop, market and sell software and other products for doing business over the Internet, a Vignette official said in an interview.

Rational Software Corp., whose software helps computer programmers write new software, has already signed up as one of the first members of the alliance, said Erik Josowitz, Vignette`s vice president for strategy.

Austin, Texas-based Vignette expects to have about nine others on board by Oct. 23, when it plans to announce the venture as hundreds of Internet companies gather in New York for the Internet World industry trade show. Potential partners include well-known names such as International Business Machines Corp., Macromedia Inc., Akamai Technologies Inc., Inktomi Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc., Josowitz said in an interview.

The alliance would work to integrate the different software programs and services sold by its member companies, creating what Vignette says would be a ``one-stop shop`` for companies needing to bring their information systems up to speed as they expand use of the Internet.

Establishing the group could help Vignette distinguish itself from rivals BroadVision Inc. and Art Technology Group Inc. The three companies are in a bitter battle for control of a market for software that lets businesses tailor the content of Web sites to the individual interests of customers.

Vignette maintains that it`s tough for most corporate IT managers to discern exactly what it will take to build Internet systems that will be able to meet their current needs and also grow in the future as their Internet strategy evolves.

``We`re trying to say to the market, `look you need all of these things and this is how they fit together,``` he said.

While Internet software companies generally have dozens of marketing partners, there is no other group working in this area that has the same breadth of product offerings as the Vignette-led alliance, he said.

That should give all members of the group -- dubbed XCM, or the Extended Content Management Alliance -- an advantage over competitors, he said.

Vignette declined to disclose the specific financial terms of the proposed agreements, though it said that all members must agree to fund what will be an international marketing campaign to promote the alliance.

Companies can earn revenue from the alliance according to any of several formulas being planned.

Rational Software, for example, will sell a software package that incorporates Vignette technology and paying a royalty to Vignette, Josowitz said. That could give Rational a boost in its efforts to take market away from rival Interwoven Inc.

Filenet and Vignette, on the other hand, will both invest in writing software that will let customers integrate products sold by the two companies, he said.

IBM -- which makes software that helps businesses catalog digital assets such as photos, audio documents and word-processor files -- is among the companies that Vignette said is in serious talks to join the alliance. Vignette could sign an agreement with IBM as early as Monday, Josowitz said.

Vignette officials said that other companies likely to join are Filenet, whose products help track and file huge documents; multimedia software maker Macromedia Inc., Akamai Technologies, which helps speed delivery of Web content, he said. Vignette is also talking to Akamai-rival Inktomi, electronic-publishing software maker Adobe Systems Inc. and Internet service provider Concero Inc.

Vignette shares rose 1/16 to 27 1/4 in late trading. They`ve lost more than half their value this year in line with the broad plunge in Internet-related stocks.

      Rational of Cupertino, California fell 1 7/8 to 52 13/16. Armonk, New York-based IBM rose 5 9/16 to 108 11/16.

      Vignette - Allianz mit IBM?
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Press Release
Vignette and 13 Internet, Hardware, Software and Service Companies in Alliance to Extend Content Management
Companies Will Join to Support the Development, Marketing and Sales of XCM Software Products
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2000-- Vignette Corp. (Nasdaq:VIGN - news), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) and 12 other companies today announced they have joined forces to define enterprise requirements for content management by creating the eXtended Content Management (XCM) Alliance -- a one-stop destination for companies looking for comprehensive content management solutions for building online businesses.

With the best-in-category partners, the XCM Alliance is intended to create and define the standard criteria for content management solutions and help companies develop a framework for evaluating their various business needs to create fully-integrated, end-to-end solutions. In addition, the alliance plans to allow customers to contact one source when buying the highest quality content management solutions available that are extensible, scalable and easily integrated.

The XCM Alliance brings together vendors from the three major categories that make up the content management world -- Content Development Management, Application Content Management and Content Delivery/Acceleration Management. Classifying content management applications in this way is designed to enable customers to make faster, smarter purchasing decisions.

``The needs of customers go beyond just managing content for the Web and encompass the pains of managing information across the whole of their businesses,`` said Greg Peters, CEO, president and chairman of Vignette®. ``This alliance addresses the confusion that customers currently face when evaluating these solutions. With these world-class companies, the XCM Alliance is designed to redefine the market for content management solutions. Customers can now look to one source of information and can identify best-of-breed integrated solutions.``

The founding members of the XCM Alliance are Akamai (Nasdaq:AKAM - news), Artesia Technologies, Bulldog, Concero, FileNET (Nasdaq:FILE - news), Idiom, Inktomi (Nasdaq:INKT - news), Macromedia (Nasdaq:MACR - news), Nexgenix, Rational Software (Nasdaq:RATL - news), Sun Microsystems, Quark, Vignette and Virage (Nasdaq:VRGE - news), which combined have more than one million customers, both large and small.

Leading market and industry analysts have discussed the XCM framework and have been very positive about the potential the XCM Alliance creates.

``We`ve been talking about confusion in the content management market for some time now,`` said Andrew Warzecha, vice president, META Group. ``It`s refreshing to see that some vendors have started to listen. We believe that at least through 2002, no one vendor will be able to provide a complete content management framework and that, to meet user requirements, the market will evolve through tightly knit partner consortiums. These `keiretsus,` like Vignette`s XCM Alliance, will redefine the competitive landscape for content management, making it easier for companies to identify their content management needs and purchase the right set of solutions.``

      Sun Microsystems

``This is an exciting alliance of industry leaders committed to a common vision of delivering a comprehensive solution to the marketplace,`` said Doug Kaewert, vice president, Market Development, at Sun Microsystems Inc. ``When you combine leading implementation methodologies and best practices with Sun`s Solaris(tm) Operating Environment and Java(tm) technologies, you provide the standards-based tools and open architecture that customers require for running reliable, mission-critical applications. In conjunction with this alliance, Sun plans to help enable companies to create new value-added services, deliver their content across new mediums, speed product time to market and reduce overall costs.``

      Akamai

``Content management applications now need to interoperate with integrated global content delivery networks in order to provide e-businesses with required levels of scalability, reliability and infrastructure performance,`` said George Kurian, vice president and general manager of Content Delivery Services at Akamai. ``Our company, working with the XCM Alliance, will ensure that e-businesses are able to easily manage and optimize the delivery of their content, streaming media and applications to their end-users.``

      FileNET

``FileNET is proud to be a charter member of this unique alliance,`` said Lee Roberts, CEO of FileNET. ``XCM delivers on what most businesses have known all along -- that comprehensive management and delivery of content across and beyond the enterprise is one of their most important assets. FileNET`s market leading eProcess management platform, combined with Vignette`s historical strength in providing e-business applications with strong content delivery and e-marketing capabilities, is the perfect complement for delivering an e-business application that extends internal operational processes to the Web.``

      Inktomi

``By integrating critical elements within the content value chain, the XCM Alliance enables enterprises to further leverage content creation tools and content distribution technology,`` said Ed Haslam, chief strategist, Network Products Division at Inktomi. ``Within the XCM framework, Inktomi`s leading network cache and content delivery platform provides companies with higher performance and more control over the distribution of their content and greater visibility into how it is used.``

      Macromedia

``As the market leader in providing professional Web authoring and development solutions, we see the need for standards for content management,`` said Tom Hale, senior vice president of Product Marketing for Macromedia. ``We`re delighted to support the XCM Alliance to help define how content should be authored for it to be more successfully managed.``

      Nexgenix

``Nexgenix is pleased to be a charter member of the eXtended Content Management Alliance to help create global standards for the creation, management and delivery of content worldwide,`` said Rick Dutta, chairman, co-founder and co-CEO of Nexgenix. ``With the growing importance of rich media and broadband requirements for content management, creators, syndicators and aggregators will need a framework to ensure that users worldwide get content when, where and how they want it. By helping launch the alliance, we can help ensure that standards are designed to support relationship marketing functionality, which is critical to building a profitable e-business in today`s crowded marketplace.``

      Rational Software

``By combining Rational`s market-leading e-development tools and best practices with Vignette`s market-leading content management technology, we`re providing customers with a complete set of integrated products for developing the highest quality e-business sites,`` said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of Marketing and Suite Products for Rational. ``Every e-business site contains a combination of code and content, and if that code and content are not managed in unison, the site will fail.``

      Virage

``Virage is very pleased to be a charter member of the XCM Alliance,`` said Paul Lego, CEO, president and chairman of Virage Inc. ``Virage`s industry leading Internet Video Application Platform will enable Vignette`s suite of leading e-business applications to fluidly work with video. As streaming video becomes pervasive throughout the Internet and corporate intranets, customers are demanding a highly extensible and scalable approach to publishing, managing and distributing their valuable video content. With XCM, we believe Vignette, Virage and the other partners have gone a long way to defining a solution that addresses this need.``

      Vignette Corp.

``We have found that corporate IT managers want reliable information on content management solutions and the ability to buy software that performs exactly like it is advertised,`` said Bill Daniel, senior vice president of Products for Vignette. ``The XCM Alliance fills that need by ensuring that IT managers know where every content management product available to them fits into the overall XCM framework, and that each solution is scalable and easily integrated with those from other vendors. Our overall objective with the XCM Alliance is to bring clarity to the decision making process that IT managers face when confronted with a content management purchasing decision.``

``Our customers tell us that there is too much chaos in the world of content management,`` said Vignette CEO Peters. ``So, as the market leader in content management, we listened and created an alliance of world-class content management companies that will help define this segment while providing solutions to customers` pressing business problems. This XCM Alliance will calm the chaos by becoming a one-stop destination offering extended content management solutions for companies who want world-class solutions to world-wide problems.``

Companies interested in learning more about this Alliance can call Vignette at 512/306-4300 and ask to speak to an XCM Alliance representative.

Vignette Cements Leadership Position in Wireless Space With Rollout of New Vignette eWireless Application
Industry`s First Wireless B2B Commerce Application Enables Companies to Slash Time-to-Market for Delivery of Wireless Products and Services to Customers, Trading Partners
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 2000-- Vignette Corp. (Nasdaq:VIGN - news), the leading supplier of e-business applications, today announced Vignette eWireless(tm), the first e-business application that enables companies to conduct B2B transactions and exchange information with business applications using any wireless device, is available and shipping to customers.

Based on open Internet standards, including XML and the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and featuring a powerful intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), Vignette eWireless leapfrogs the competition by enabling a fully interactive Web experience on virtually any wireless device.

The new product allows a company`s employees, customers and trading partners to conduct transactions -- such as purchasing from product catalogs, approving requisitions or accessing back-end applications -- directly from their handheld wireless device. Devices supported include WAP-based phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and pagers.

Vignette eWireless is a comprehensive application that automates many of the labor-intensive custom coding requirements associated with other wireless-enablement products. Specifically, Vignette eWireless:

Allows companies to easily manage content, transactions and access to workflow.
Manages users/security. The application manages access to content by user and allows companies to personalize user experiences individually or by role.
Manages multiple devices. The application greatly simplifies the process of presenting content to many different/unique devices while accommodating the unique characteristics of each device.
For example, an industrial supplier using Vignette eWireless can provide its customers with a wireless device pre-loaded with a custom catalog of products they routinely purchase. When these customers are out in the field or at a job site, they will be able to use a wireless phone or PDA to order or reorder products, approve a price quote and purchase order, and arrange for delivery at a specified time -- without tracking down a telephone, fax machine or filling out paperwork.

``The wireless channel is becoming more and more important to businesses requiring tailored vertical applications, such as the construction and manufacturing industries,`` said Shawn Willett, senior analyst, Current Analysis at Sterling, Va.

``The Vignette eWireless application is a strong step in the right direction towards meeting the demands and needs of companies requiring the ability to remotely execute and exchange information with business applications using wireless devices. We foresee applications like this playing a much larger role in businesses in the near future.``

The unique ability of Vignette eWireless to integrate B2B content, transactions and any back office system with wireless devices enables companies to:

Slash the time-to-market for delivery of new wireless products and services to any number of customers and trading partners.
Increase revenues by reducing the total cycle time for processing and confirming orders through wireless devices.
Dramatically reduce the costs of doing business with new wireless services by using open, Internet technology that easily evolves over time and integrates with existing business applications.
``We believe that the true `killer apps` for wireless will be found in the business-to-business segment,`` said David Shirk, senior vice president and general manager, Collaboration and Integration Products Division, Vignette. ``By enabling employees, customers and trading partners to conduct B2B transactions using wireless devices, Vignette is making it possible to conduct business anywhere, anytime.``

IDC & Roberston Stephens estimates that by 2002 the number of wireless subscribers will reach more than 1 billion. And within 10 years, the total wireless revenue opportunity is expected to range from $15 to $18 billion for the consumer market and $250 billion in the business segment, according to a Feb. 25, 2000, report from H. C. Wainwright & Co.

``The opportunity for wireless has been virtually untapped in B2B and our clear leadership, with applications like Vignette eWireless, in this market will help our customers get to market early with new wireless products and services,`` said Shirk.

Vignette eWireless Provides Comprehensive B2B Solution

Unlike existing wireless solutions, which consist of simple notification systems that do not facilitate B2B transactions or allow access to back office systems, Vignette eWireless allows companies to rapidly wireless-enable their existing applications, data and processes, as well as those of their trading partners. Vignette eWireless features include:

Support for Multiple Wireless Devices: Vignette eWireless provides integration with a number of wireless devices, including smart phones, PDAs, Windows CE devices and other information appliances.
Intuitive Portal Environment: Vignette eWireless provides a user portal which enables end-users to quickly and easily retrieve information in a form tailored to their device and browser.
Personalized End-User Experience: Vignette eWireless allows companies and end users to personalize and configure default settings to gain the most out of their wireless device.
Powerful Administration Capabilities: Vignette eWireless includes capabilities for administering and managing wireless services deployment to individual users and devices.
Java-based Web Architectures: The Vignette eWireless architecture provides inherent scalability in a Web environment by being 100% J2EE compliant and running on industry-leading application servers.
Support for Leading Protocols: Vignette eWireless provides for support with all leading wireless protocols, including WAP and WML.
Extensible and Customizable Business Logic Environment: Vignette eWireless utilizes a comprehensive and integrated platform for B2B development that allows for easy customization by business managers.
Scalable Wireless Platform: The Vignette eWireless platform provides flexibility as companies grow their wireless products and services by easily scaling across thousands of devices.
