1. das Geld geht Tesla offenbar nicht so schnell aus (*)
2. es gibt noch nichts Aufregendes zum Herzeigen; nicht mal für die Fanboys
3. das Märchen von der "supply constraint" (bei Batterie-Zellen durch die böse Panasonic) kann aufrecht erhalten werden

USA: spürbarer Rückgang der Verkäufe Q2 --> Q3: geschätzt -15% (derzeit und mindestens)

das ist die eigentliche Story für 2019Q3

--> und die maßgebliche Erklärung dafür ist auch einfach: weitere Einschränkung der Förderung auf Bundesebene ab Juli (Staatsebene ist was anderes und sehr kompliziert)

--> ich komme damit nur noch auf ~46k Autos in den USA - derzeit:




..und das würde einem Rückgang Q2 nach Q3 von (derzeit) ~-15% (oder ~8000 Einheiten) entsprechen!

--> das auch zur Einordnung der ~3000 Autos nach Tesla-Angaben, die in Q3 aus logistischen Gründen in den USA nicht mehr ausgeliefert werden konnten (siehe oben)


Nebenbei:
• nach den JL Warren-Zahlen ergab sich in China ein Rückgang von ~-4.9% von Q2 nach Q3 bei den Gesamtauslieferungen

nach meinen Zahlen gingen die Auslieferungen bei Model S und X in den USA leicht überproportional um ~-18% von Q2 nach Q3 zurück

--> d.h., das "Raven"-Upgrade ("enhanced Dynamic Air Suspension and a more powerful motor") konnte hier nicht einmal für eine Stabilisierung der Verkäufe sorgen

Of 33 analysts polled by FactSet, Tesla is expected to report an adjusted loss of 45 cents a share for the quarter. That would contrast with an adjusted profit of $2.90 a share in the year-ago period. Tesla reported GAAP and adjusted per-share profits in the third and fourth quarters of 2018.

Estimize, a crowdsourcing platform that gathers estimates from Wall Street analysts as well as buy-side analysts, fund managers, company executives, academics and others, is expecting an adjusted loss of 40 cents a share for Tesla.

The analysts surveyed by FactSet expect sales of $6.45 billion for Tesla. That would be down from $6.82 billion a year ago. Estimize sees revenue of $6.61 billion for Tesla.

For a company that prides itself on its computer expertise, Tesla's rookie mistake on flash storage is hard to fathom. But not impossible. Here's how it screwed up.

According to the folks at InsideEVs, the problem begins with the massive amount of system logging enabled on the car's Media Control Unit (MCU), a single-board computer running Linux. Soldered on the MCU is an 8GB eMMC (enhanced Multi-Media Controller) flash storage chip.

The eMMC is a small solid-state drive (SSD) with an on-board controller. The eMMC has a standardized interface that makes it easy for board designers to add storage without worrying about all the details required to keep flash working well.

The major worry with flash is that flash wears out. Write a bit enough times and it will stop accepting new data. The controller works to ensure that bits are written to in a round-robin fashion, a technique known as wear leveling.


What happened?

Someone at Tesla enabled logging on the MCU for no good reason. The constant writing of logs to the eMMC, data that is rarely needed, means the eMMC eventually wears out, and firmware that the eMMC stores is no longer readable, so the MCU fails.


Bummer.

The logging isn't the only problem. The firmware stored on the eMMC has grown over the years from about 30MB to 1GB. The logging has less capacity available, and the firmware updates require a writable eMMC.

Thanks to wear leveling and other techniques, flash wear out isn't a problem today unless you do something stupid. Like logging unneeded data year after year.


The fix

Third parties can replace the chip on the MCU, which is a fiddly process, but cheaper than replacing the entire board. Which is what Tesla does.

The third parties write the syslog data to a RAM disk, which won't wear out, but is volatile. But why is Tesla writing the data at all?

Die Loggen im gleichen Flash Speicher, wo auch die FW drin ist. Irre ansich. Jeder Schreibzugriff schwächt den gesamten Speicher und irgendwann sind die Daten fehlerhaft und die Prüfsumme stimmt nicht mehr. Soweit mein Kenntnisstand. Ansich könnte man als Work-Around den gesamten Speicher refreshen (Zellen lesen und gleich wieder schreiben). Aber dafür braucht man garantierte OFF Zeiten, also Zeiten, wo der Speicher nicht benutzt wird von der Anwendung. Dann steht das Auto halt für einige Minuten still.

Es gab schon verschiedene Berichte, wo der Tesla erst nach Minuten fahrbereit war. Kann es sein, dass Tesla das schon längst versucht zu beheben aber es immer noch die alten Probleme gibt ?

Es zeigt sich wieder einmal ... Tesla hat keine Ahnung davon, wie man ein zuverlässiges Produkt baut. In keinem Bereich.
