The system will feature a proprietary cannula design, fitted with disposable nasal dilators that diffuse the stream of oxygen as it enters the nasal passage and prevent the nasal dryness, irritation and discomfort commonly reported by cannula users. The nasal dilators also work to open the nasal passage and increase airflow by up to 60%, enhancing the overall effectiveness of oxygen therapy. Commonly prescribed for patients with chronic shortness of breath, sleep-related breathing disorders and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), oxygen therapy has been widely provided through a nasal cannula system since the 1940s. A recent international survey found that worldwide prevalence ranged from 7%-9% (up to 640 million people). With home oxygen patients averaging two or three cannulas a month, an estimated 800 million cannulas are used annually for oxygen therapy alone.
