Leiden University Real Estate has selected Heijmans to build its new Bèta Campus
FWN (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) in Leiden. Heijmans will be
responsible for all the architectural aspects of this project. The contract is
valued at approximately EUR 38 million and was partly awarded on the basis of
    quality criteria.

The contract consists of the construction and coordination of approx. 45,000
m(2) gross floor area and comprises laboratories, lecture halls, offices and an
underground car park. The specifications were fully developed using the Building
Information Modelling (BIM) approach. These specifications will be further
optimised between now and May 2013. Heijmans scored well in terms of price, as
well as qualitative aspects, such as approach, organisation, control measures,
limiting inconvenience, sustainability and the proposed technical optimisations.
As such Heijmans made a difference.

The Bèta Campus will be constructed with a BREEAM Very Good´ Certificate which
reflects the building´s exceptional sustainability performance. This
certification is unique for a non-residential building that accommodates a lab
function. The sustainability measures that will be applied include the
sustainable generation of heating and cooling and energy efficient ventilation,
among others. Work on the next design and optimisation stage has since started,
after which construction will start in May 2013. The project is expected to be
    completed in September 2015.

    Leiden Biosciences Park
The construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences constitutes
the first stage of the total of 99,000 m2 to be developed in the Leiden
Biosciences Park. The faculty consists of a partnership of institutes in the
field of natural sciences, mathematics, biology, chemistry, biopharmaceuticals,
information technology, the environment and astronomy. The faculty wants to be
housed in a single building in the future in which the interaction between
research and education and collaboration between research institutes are key
    considerations.
