TotalEnergies has completed its closely watched Nara-1X exploration probe offshore Namibia, with an announcement thought to be imminent on what could be another blockbuster oil discovery.
The ultra-deepwater Nara-1X probe was drilled by drillship Tungsten Explorer in the red-hot Orange basin in Block 2912.

According to tracking data from marine intelligence provider VesselsValue, the Vantage Drilling-owned rig arrived at the Nara-1X location in mid-June, departed on 16 September and is now heading for Walvis Bay port.
While the well results are not known, the fact that TotalEnergies is set to issue a statement on its Namibia drilling campaign within days — it is also close to wrapping up a well test on the Venus-1X discovery probe in Block 2913B — could be taken as an indication that positive news is imminent.
“I believe that TotalEnergies will be issuing a statement soon,” said a knowledgeable source.
On the implications of a statement being released and it relates to Nara-1X, another source remarked: “I think it will be good.”TotalEnergies’ original plan, if it made a discovery with the first Nara probe, was to test this probe and then drill and test a follow-up appraisal well.
Nara-1X was drilled in water depths beyond 3000 metres, just two kilometres from the boundary with Block 2913B and about 23 kilometres northwest of the recently completed Venus-1A appraisal well.
Despite its name, Nara-1X could be a westerly extension of the Venus reservoir.

Upstream reported in June that if Nara-1X met expectations it had the potential to double reserves from about 3 billion to 6 billion barrels of oil, according to a Barclays research note.
State-owned Namcor said last month that Venus holds about 5 billion barrels of oil in place, only a certain amount of which will be recoverable.
Upstream was told last year that Venus had the potential to house 12 billion barrels of oil if was proven to extend into Block 2912.
TotalEnergies had not responded to questions at press time.
