      ARACRUZ
      KGV: 9

ARACRUZ Celulose is the world`s leading producer of bleached eucalyptus pulp. The company is responsible for 31% of the global supply of the product, used to manufacture high value added goods such as tissue, printing and writing, and specialty papers.

ARACRUZ`s forestry operations are situated in the states of Espírito Santo, Bahia, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul. They involve some 247,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantations, intermingled with 128,000 hectares of company-owned native forest reserves, which are specially maintained to preserve the balance of the ecosystem. In Espírito Santo, Bahia and Minas Gerais there are a further 58,000 hectares contracted within the Forestry Partners Program, which is run in partnership with more than 2,500 local farmers; in Rio Grande do Sul, another 7,000 hectares of plantations are kept in association with third parties.

ARACRUZ’s production of pulp, totaling 2.4 million tons a year, is distributed between two pulp making units: Barra do Riacho, in Espírito Santo, and Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul.

In Espírito Santo, the company operates a pulp making complex that is fully integrated with company-owned eucalyptus plantations and a specialized private port, Portocel, through which over 80 percent of ARACRUZ`s pulp production is exported. The Barra do Riacho Unit site contains three mills with total capacity of 2 million tons a year of pulp. The industrial complex includes three recovery boilers; three continuous digesters; five bleaching and drying lines, and facilities for chemicals recovery, water treatment and electricity generation through biomass. Environmental control is ensured through modern systems that treat all solid, liquid and gaseous wastes.

At the Guaíba Unit (formerly Riocell) site, located in the municipality of Guaíba (RS), ARACRUZ operates a high-tech mill with capacity to produce 400,000 tons annually of bleached eucalyptus pulp, which also is equipped with advanced environmental protection resources.

A third unit — Veracel Celulose — is being built in the municipality of Eunápolis, in the south of Bahia, in partnership with Stora Enso (a 50% ownership stake each). With startup of operations scheduled for 2005, Veracel will have the capacity to produce 900,000 tons a year of bleached eucalyptus pulp.

In association with Weyerhaeuser Co., ARACRUZ owns one third of ARACRUZ ARACRUZ Produtos de Madeira, which operates a high technology sawmill in southern Bahia and supplies top quality solid wood products made from eucalyptus plantation lumber to the furniture and interior design industries in Brazil and abroad.

ARACRUZ`s commitment to sustainable development is reflected both in the company`s management of its eucalyptus plantations and in its preservation of natural ecosystems. Strict environmental practices at the company`s pulp mills are also subject to a process of continuous improvement.

The company`s standards of social responsibility are reflected, among other aspects, in a significant program of social contributions to neighboring communities in the regions in which ARACRUZ operates.

Four major shareholders control the company`s voting shares: the Safra, Lorentzen and Votorantim groups (each owning 28 per cent of the voting shares) and BNDES, the Brazilian National Economic and Social Development Bank (12.5 per cent). ARACRUZ`s preferred shares, which constitute over half the company`s total outstanding shares, are traded on the São Paulo, New York and Madrid stock exchanges.

      BUSINESS STRATEGY

The following ongoing projects implement ARACRUZ business strategy:

      * Economies of scale resulting from new capacity increases. The commencement of the operation of the Fiberline C Expansion Project at the end of May 2002 increased ARACRUZ nominal production capacity from 1,300,000 to over 2,000,000 tons per year in the middle of 2002. The Fiberline C Expansion Project relies on ARACRUZ technology advances and benefits from its existing overhead and management structure, which has absorbed the new activity without significant additional fixed costs.
      * Improvements in forestry technology using advanced genetic techniques, which will result in an increase in the forest yield.
      * Optimization of transportation logistics. Transportation of wood to the Mill comprises a large portion of the cost of the pulp production. Improve in transportation logistics and costs are a priority for the Company. At the end of 2002, ARACRUZ improved the logistics of its rail transportation. The Company also launched its Multimodal Transportation Systems—Maritime and Rail—, the main objective of which is to enhance logistics and further integrate its Mill-Port-Forest system.
      * Redesign of management processes with the support of state-of-the-art information technology in order to improve efficiency and reduce costs. In 2001, ARACRUZ implemented new modules of the company-wide SAP R/3 enterprise system that controls, simplifies and integrates its business processes. The Company is currently using virtually all the modules supplied by SAP, both in the pulp mill and the sawmill operations. Recently, ARACRUZ has selected the “mySAP.com” platform to improve connectivity with customers and suppliers.
      * Increase of competitiveness. The competitiveness of ARACRUZ business operations, combined with its significant cash generation capabilities, has led the Company to evaluate from time to time various future strategic alternatives, including further increase of current pulp operations either through acquisitions or expansion of existing capacity, and/or further acquisitions of additional forests.

Aracruz is now `investment grade` in foreign currency too

Standard & Poors Ratings Services has just raised Aracruz Celulose`s foreign currency risk rating from BB- to BBB- (investment grade), the same rating the company has in local currency.

According to Aracruz`s Chief Financial Officer, Isac Zagury, "the foreign currency investment grade rating should contribute to a reduction in the cost of capital for Aracruz over the medium term and, consequently, to an increase in the company`s market capitalization. This recognition bolsters the global position of Aracruz, the world`s leading producer of eucalyptus pulp and one of Brazil`s largest net exporters."

Aracruz Celulose included on Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Brazilian pulp maker is now among the world leaders of corporate sustainability

(Barra do Riacho, September 13, 2005) - Aracruz Celulose (NYSE: ARA), the world leading producer of eucalyptus pulp, and one of Brazil`s largest exporters, has just been included in the select rank of companies on the New York Stock Exchange`s Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) 2006. The list highlights the best corporate sustainability practices in the world and was published on September 7, encompassing companies from 58 sectors and 24 countries after analysis by the SAM Group.

Aracruz is the only Brazilian company to join this list this year. In the forestry sector, Aracruz is listed together with Stora Enso of Sweden-Finland (Aracruz`s partner in the Veracel pulp mill in Bahia) and Finland`s UPM-Kymmene. Two other companies from Brazil, Cemig and Banco Itaú, remained on the index.

"This is a significant accomplishment for Aracruz. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index has the greatest credibility and is the most complete in the world. It takes into consideration the strictest economic, social and environmental criteria," said Aracruz`s president and CEO, Carlos Aguiar.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index lists companies in the top 10% of their respective industries in the world. A total of 2,500 companies were considered for a place on the index. Aracruz competed in the Forestry and Paper & Pulp sector and obtained outstanding ratings in the three dimensions that were appraised.
