Britain awards Equinor, BP carbon storage licences in Southern North Sea

OSLO (Reuters) - Britain's North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) on Thursday said it has awarded energy firms Equinor and BP two carbon storage licences on the UK Continental Shelf off the coast of Humberside.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) transports CO2 from where it is emitted and stores it, usually underground, to prevent its release into the atmosphere.

The technology is expected to help Britain meet its 2050 net zero carbon emissions target, the government has said, with the UK aiming to store 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year by 2030 and over 50 million tonnes by 2035.

The licences are valid for eight years, during which the firms need to achieve milestones such as performing seismic surveys of the four proposed storage sites and drilling wells to acquire data, the NSTA said in a statement.

Combined with existing licences nearby held by the Northern Endurance Partnership, which includes Equinor and BP, the licences have the potential to allow the storage of up to 23 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide, it added.

Including the latest awards, there are now six storage licences active in the UK, with the NSTA estimating first injections could come as soon as 2025.

Windfall tax on energy firms not the right way forward - UK's Johnson

LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday he did not believe a windfall tax on global energy firms was the right way forward and he wanted to ensure the government did not deter investment by energy companies.

A spike in oil prices due to the war in Ukraine has helped major oil firms book billions of pounds in earnings this year, prompting calls from some politicians for a windfall tax to help families facing cost of living pressures.

“I don’t like them. I didn’t think they’re the right thing. I don’t think they’re the right way forward,” LBC Radio quoted Johnson as saying when asked if he would rule out a windfall tax.

“The disadvantage with those sorts of taxes is that they deter investment … they need to be investing in new technology, in new energy supply.”

BP Chief Executive Bernard Looney told the Times last week that the company would go ahead with investment in Britain even if a windfall tax were to be imposed.

BP bids for two Dutch offshore wind power leases

May 12 (Reuters) - Oil major BP (BP.L) has submitted bids to develop two offshore wind power leases in the Netherlands, it said on Thursday, as the company increases its focus on renewable energy.

BP has bid in the tender process for two wind farm sites at the Hollandse Kust (West) zone, located 53 kilometres off the Netherlands' west coast with a potential 1.4-gigawatt power capacity.

The company said it would invest 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in more clean energy projects in the Netherlands if it is successful in the bids, which include a commitment to spend 75 million euros on ecological monitoring in the North Sea.

BP aims to produce 50,000 tonnes a year of green hydrogen from the wind farms, to meet its Rotterdam refinery demand and support sustainable aviation fuel production of 10,000 barrels a day, along with developing electric vehicle charging stations.

Die Ausschüttung der Dividende soll am 24. Juni 2022 erfolgen. Ex-Dividenden Tag ist der 12. Mai 2022. Im Vergleich zum Vorquartal bleibt die Dividende damit stabil."

Auch auf die Gefahr hin, dass die Frage dämlich ist..

U.S. to kick off latest offshore wind auction for Carolina coast

May 11 (Reuters) - Bidding for federal wind energy leases for two areas off the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina kicked off on Wednesday, with each attracting over $2.7 million.

The sale - the second such offering this year - is part of the Biden administration's broad push to put wind turbines in federal waters along every U.S. coastline and comes on the heels of a record February wind auction off the coast of New York and New Jersey that drew $4.37 billion in high bids.

U.S. President Joe Biden has said the nascent offshore wind industry will create well-paying jobs while creating the carbon-free electricity needed to combat climate change. His administration aims to permit 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030.

The online auction, which kicked off at 9 a.m. EST (1300 GMT), includes two leases covering 110,091 acres in the Carolina Long Bay area. The leases could one day generate 1.5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy -- enough to power half a million homes, according to the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which oversees energy development in federal waters.

The sale has 16 registered bidders, including arms of European energy companies that are already developing U.S. offshore wind projects, such as BP (BP.L), Orsted (ORSTED.CO) and Shell New Energies (SHEL.L), as well as new market players like United Arab Emirates-based Masdar and Japan's JERA. Duke Energy (DUK.N), a North Carolina-based power company, is also on the list of potential bidders, as is Avangrid , which is currently seeking a federal permit for a project off the coast of North Carolina.

Unlike the recent auction in the New York Bight, a single bidder may win both Carolina Long Bay lease areas, BOEM said.

The Carolinas sale is not expected to be the 3-day bidding frenzy that drove the New York Bight sale into stratospheric territory, in part because southeastern states do not have the aggressive offshore wind procurement targets of many of their northeastern counterparts.

The auction terms allow a bidder to receive a 20% credit if it commits to the development of a domestic offshore wind supply chain or workforce training.
