Das Unternehmen China Molybdenum Co Ltd hat heute erfolgreich seinen Börsenstart in Hongkong vollzogen.
Das Unternehmen platzierte seine Shares zu einem Preis von 6,80 HKD. Diese waren im Vorfeld 398 - fach überzeichnet. Die Handelsaufnahme erfolgte mit einem Aufschlag von 60,9 Prozent auf 10,94 HKD. Das Hoch im Vormittagshandel lag bei 11,28 HKD und 547 Mio. gehandelter Shares bei einem Volumen von 5,84 Mrd. HKD.
Der Analyst Matthew Kwok von Tanrich Securities geht davon aus, dass sich der Kurs um die 11 HKD stabilisieren dürfte und die Aktie aussichtsreich ist, auch wenn zunächst mit Gewinnmitnahmen zu rechnen sei. Institutionelle Investoren konnten auf Grund der hohen Nachfrage nicht vollständig bedient werden.
Die Spezialmetallsorte unterliegt höchster Nachfrage, vor allem aus den Bereichen Konstruktion und Automobilproduktion, so Kwok.

An der Berliner Börse ragten China Molybdenum Co. Ltd mit sehr
großen Umsätzen (WKN A0M ND2) heraus. Der chinesische Molybdän
Produzent feierte heute sein Börsendebüt. Die Papiere konnten in
Hongkong an ihrem ersten Handelstag zeitweise um über 60 Prozent
zulegen und notierten in Berlin gegen Mittag bei 1,040 Euro.

mich würde als erste mal die reserven und die jährliche fördermenge interessieren
vermutlich dürfte das kgv aber weit oberhalb von ble liegen
und weit über dem der anderen verdächtigen
würde mich nicht mal wundern, wenn das kgv bereits oberhalb von 20 liegt
das wäre dann eher ein wert
den man nicht im depot haben muss
zumal es reichlich andere moly werte gibt

Molybdenum producer markets growth story to IPO investors

The company plans to set aside around $150 million for cornerstone investors from its $500 million share sale.
The name doesn’t exactly role off the tongue, but if investors can get past that small problem, they will find that China Molybdenum, or China Moly for short, is actually quite a simple story – a mining company with one mine that produces a specialty metal which is in high demand by China’s growing stainless steel industry.

And the one mine isn’t just any old mine, but one of the largest pure molybdenum mines in the world with 498,000 tonnes of reserves. Much of the global supply of molybdenum is otherwise derived as a byproduct of copper processing, making companies with a primary focus on this metal something of a rarity.

The same mine also contains 506,000 tonnes of tungsten reserves, making China Moly the second largest owner of tungsten reserves in the world. This metal, which is a byproduct from molybdenum processing, currently accounts for less than 1% of China Moly’s revenues but will become an increasingly important growth driver once the company completes the construction of its own tungsten recovery facilities by early 2008, sources say.

The company will also use the IPO proceeds to increase both the ore output from its mine and the processing capacity of various molybdenum products further down the value chain. Consequently it is being marketed as a growth story with a potential for 44% growth in net profit this year and 15% in 2008, according to a syndicate research report. This comes on top of 31% profit growth last year and 319% in 2005.

“This company has the necessary scale in its molybdenum production and it is in the right place with demand in China increasing rapidly,” one observer says.

“There is also an M&A theme as the company is looking to buy up mines and mining rights amid further industry consolidation,” adds another.

Molybdenum is used primarily to harden various forms of steel, making it more resistant to corrosion and improving its strength at high temperatures. Steel mixed with molybdenum has a variety of applications within the construction, shipbuilding, auto, defense and oil industries among others. What makes it especially valuable though, is the fact that it has few substitutes.

According to a Roskill Molybdenum Economics report, quoted in the pre-deal research, China’s consumption of molybdenum grew at a CAGR of 17% between 2000 and 2005 which was 7.7 times the growth rate in the US, 5.3 times that in Western Europe and 3.5 times the growth rate in Japan.

Tungsten too is used as a steel alloy and is a metal which should be familiar to Hong Kong investors after Hunan Nonferrous Metals, one of China’s leading integrated producers of tungsten, completed its own IPO in March last year. Even those who didn’t pay much attention to the IPO will be aware of HNF’s spectacular 73% gain on its first day of trading. Since then the share price has continued to head higher and even after some volatility over the past month it closed at HK$5.06 on Friday – more than three times its IPO price of HK$1.65.

No doubt, investors will be hoping for similar medium-term gains for China Moly, which is currently pre-marketing an initial public offering of more than $500 million through Morgan Stanley and UBS. Notably, Morgan Stanley was also one of the bookrunners for HNF’s IPO together with BOC International.

The molybdenum producer has already attracted the attention of a number of tycoons and corporate investors. According to sources, the company plans to sell around $150 million worth of shares to seven or eight such cornerstone investors who in return for a guaranteed allocation will commit to a 12-month lockup.

The final list of cornerstone investors has yet to be agreed upon, but sources say they will include many of the usual players who tend to participate in Hong Kong listings of large Mainland companies, including China Life Insurance, Henderson Land Development chairman Lee Shau Kee, Dickson Concepts chairman Dickson Poon, and either Temasek or GIC, both of which are investment companies set up by the Singapore government.

China Moly is selling 22.7% of its issued share capital in the form of 1.08 billion new H-shares. There will also be a greenshoe of between 10% and 15%, with the final size to be determined before the launch of the formal institutional roadshow on April 9. The price range will also be set at that same time.

As with all H-share IPOs, the company will also need to transfer shares equivalent of 10% of the new share issue to the National Social Security Fund. This transaction will be done outside the actual share offer but the shares will count towards the free-float, bringing it up to the required 25%. The deal will have the usual 90-10 split between institutional and retail investors with a standard clawback mechanism.

The eventual IPO price is expected to value the company somewhere in between fellow specialty metals producer HNF, which currently trades at about 15.5 times projected 2007 earnings, and base metals producers like Jiangxi Copper and Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco), which tend to trade at an average forward P/E multiple of about eight times.

Base metals aren’t in the same short supply as specialty metals, however, and the irreplaceable nature of both molybdenum and tungsten in steel production suggest they should trade at a premium to the former group, one observer notes.

HNF has a larger total tungsten reserves than China Moly at 525,000 tonnes, but when taking account of the fact that it only owns 79% of its main mine, China Moly’s attributable reserve is actually 16% greater than HNF’s 436,000 tonnes. China Moly’s estimated profit is also about two times that of its listed rival. Balancing out that somewhat, HNF’s tungsten business is more developed than China Moly’s which was started only in the past year. HNF also has exposure to lead and zinc, making it slightly more diversified.

China Moly could potentially also be compared to Toronto-listed which is the only pure molybdenum producer that is publicly listed and currently fetches a 2007 P/E multiple of about 8.3 times. Here too, analysts argued that China Moly deserves a premium, because of its four times larger reserves (which are also of higher grade), its longer mine life at 46 years versus less than 10 years, and its lower cash costs.

Using a valuation based on enterprise value to molybdenum reserves, a syndicate research report estimates Blue Pearl’s valuation at $4.56 per pound, compared with a proposed range of only $2.48 to $3.16/lb for China Moly (due to its larger reserves), which could result in some investors viewing the latter as a value play in comparison with its Canadian peer.

At the end of last year, China Moly’s Sandaozhuang mine processed 9.9 million tonnes of ore per annum at its six processing plants, which was double its 2004 output. While this is expected to remain constant over the next two years, the company is forecast to raise its extraction of molybdenum concentrate to about 28,000 tonnes this year and 33,000 tonnes in 2008 from 21,410 tonnes in 2006, representing a three-year CAGR of 49%.

Starting from this year, the company will sell none of its molybdenum ore but will use it internally to produce other products down the value chain, such as molybdenum oxide and ferromolybdenum.

Last year, the company derived about 40% of its revenues from ferromolybdenum, which is its most refined product and about 25% each from molybdenum oxide and molybdenum concentrate (the rest came from its tungsten business, the selling of ore and “other” things).

Two years down the line, ferromolybdenum’s contribution is expected to have increased to 55%, while molybdenum oxide will fall to 9% and molybdenum concentrate to 19%. The sale of tungsten concentrate should pick up to 4%-5% of the total from less than 1% now when it sends all the leftovers from its molybdenum processing to a 40% owned-associate that extracts the tungsten, the analysts project.

“We believe China Moly is evolving from an upstream material producer into a fully integrated molybdenum product producer,” one report notes, and adds: “increasing downstream processing helps to create a more stable profit profile.”

Like other mining and metals companies, China Moly’s profits are highly dependant on the price of the metal it sells and as seen in recent years this can fluctuate substantially. Molybdenum prices multiplied to an average of $33.90/lb in 2005 (after peaking at above $40/lb) from $5/lb in 2003 as the global roasting capacity was unable to match the demand from the steel industry. The forced closure of small, polluting mines in China in 2005 added further to the supply pressure.

Last year the price came down to an average of $25.11/lb, and in the first quarter this year it has hovered at $25-30/lb. The pre-deal research projects a further drop of the average price to $22.5/lb this year and $20/lb in 2008, but notes that China Moly’s cash costs of only $3-4/lb should lead to strong profits and cash flow nevertheless.

The price development at the start of this year also suggest that the price forecast may be too conservative.

The final price on the China Moly IPO is expected to be fixed around April 18-19, while the trading debut is currently scheduled for the middle of the week of April 23.

Guten morgen,

dann lassen wir uns mal überraschen wie die Kurse in den nächsten Tagen sein werden, viele rechnen mit "gewinnmitnahmen" und einer kleinen korrektur. Ich konnte diese korrektur leider nicht abwarten und hab gestern schon gekauft.

Eine Homepage der Gesellschaft habe ich dennoch nicht finden können, was eigentlich gegen ein Investment spricht.

ich hab auch zugeschlagen obwohl ich zunächst auch gewinnmitnahmen befürchtet habe.

Eine andere Theorie allerdings. Institutionelle dürfen teilweise nicht sofort verkaufen. DA die Aktie dermaßen überzeichnet war werden sich immer noch einige von denen die keine Zuteilung bekommen haben für diesen wert interessieren und wir werden die nächsten TAge noch steigende Kurse sehn.

Frankfurt wird seit heute gehandelt Volumen ist aber noch in Berlin höher.Wird sich aber die Tage aucf Frankfurt verlagern

Mit engen SL kann man hier schon noch etwas raushollen Gedanklich sl natürlich Finde immer labidar denn Vergleich das BPM 700% steigen muss damit die gleiche Bewertung hat wie Chna Moly.So wird an der Börse nicht gedacht weil die eine als Vergleich viel höher bewertet ist müsste es die andere ihr gleichmachen ist Unfug Versteht mich net falsch bin in BPM drin aber da sind definitiv so schnell keine 500% drin

Habe die Aktie heute in Frankfurt gekauft, wird in meinem Depot aber mit Börse Hongkong sowie dem Umrechnungskurs von HKD geführt - weshalb ich ein Minus von rund 10 % habe, obwohl ich laut Kurs von Frankfurt im Plus sein müsste. Kann mir jemand eine schlüssige Antwort darauf geben, Danke im Voraus.

habe gelesen, dass bei der Emission in Hongkong nicht alle zum Zuge gekommen sind, da überzeichnet...deshalb wird damit gerechnet, dass Banken und Investmenthäuser noch Stücke kaufen und der Kurs somit nicht ganz so stark unter Druck kommen sollte....

Was die Bewertungen angeht: Molybdän ist aktuell angesagt...allerdings kündigen derart große Emissionen oft ein Ende der Hausse an bzw. erfolgen während der Hausse (in dem Fall Moly-Hausse)..

China Molybdenum auch am zweiten Tag kräftiges Plus

Gestern hatte das Unternehmen China Molybdenum Co Ltd erfolgreich seinen Börsenstart in Hongkong vollzogen.
Das Unternehmen hatte seine Shares zu einem Preis von 6,80 HKD platziert. Diese waren im Vorfeld 398 - fach überzeichnet. Bereits mit Handelsaufnahme ging sie um über 60 Prozent nach oben und erreichte mit 11,28 HKD ihr Tageshoch.

Entgegen dem heutigen schwachen Markt, kann sich der Wert weiter nach oben schrauben. Im Augenblick beträgt das Plus 6,84 Prozent. Im Vormittagshandel erreichte sie mit 11,66 HKD ein neues Hoch. Das Handelsvolumen liegt bei kräftigen 1,77 Mrd. HKD.

Brot enthält Molybdän

Molybdän ist ein relativ hartes, dabei aber sprödes Schwermetall. Es besitzt die Ordnungszahl 42 und das chemische Symbol Mo. In reiner Form hat Molybdän eine dem Zinn vergleichbare Farbe. An der Luft oxidiert es und bei tiefen Temperaturen ist es supraleitend. Es ist das 39-häufigste Element in der Erdhülle. Die erste Herstellung des Metalls gelang 1781 dem schwedischen Chemiker Peter Jakob Hjelm. Der Name Molybdän leitet sich von dem lateinischen Begriff "molybdaena" für Bleiglanz ab, da man damals den Bleiglanz nicht vom Molybdänglanz unterscheiden konnte.

In der Natur kommt Molybdän in elementarer Form nicht vor. Die wichtigste Molybdänverbindung bildet dabei der Molybdänglanz (Molybdänsulfid). In der Technik wird Molybdän in einer Reihe von Legierungen zur Herstellung hochwertiger Werkzeuge verwendet. Weiterhin findet es als Glühdraht in Lampen, als Heizdraht in elektrischen Heizanlagen oder als Widerstandsdraht Verwendung. Außerdem ist es Bestandteil des Anodenmaterials in Elektronenröhren, wie z.B. Röntgenröhren. Mit dem Element Wolfram, das einen sehr hohen Schmelzpunkt aufweist und sehr spröde ist, bildet es eine für die Herstellung des Anodentellers in Röntgenröhren geeignete Legierung. Ferner wird Molybdän als Legierung mit Titan, Wolfram und Zirkonium in der Raketentechnik als Turbinenwerkstoff eingesetzt.

Der menschliche Körper enthält etwa 10 mg Molybdän, vor allem im Skelett, sowie in den inneren Organen und in der Haut.

Mar. 31, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China Molybdenum Co<3993>, the nation's second-biggest producer of the material, said full-year net profit surged 47.9% year-on-year in 2007 due to increased sales buoyed by surging prices of the silvery-white metal.

The Louyang, Henan province-based company noted in its statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that net income advanced to RMB 2.24 billion (US$319 million), or RMB 0.5 apiece, compared with RMB 1.52 billion, or RMB 0.43 apiece a year ago. Sales jumped more than 54% from the previous year to RMB 5.9 billion.

China Molybdenum's principal activity is the provision of molybdenum in China with world-class integrated mining and processing facilities, with operations involving molybdenum mining, flotation, roasting and smelting, and downstream processing.

It proposed a final dividend of RMB 0.128 a share for 2007, and a special dividend of RMB 0.03 apiece, while no dividend was declared last year.

Major Chinese producer China Molybdenum Company said its 2007 molybdenum
concentrate output was 30,753 mt, representing an increase of 41.4% year on
year.
Its molybdenum oxide output during the year was 21,035 mt, rising 57.4%
year on year, while its ferromolybdenum output was 13,309 mt, marking an
increase of 97.5% compared with the previous year.
The Hong Kong-listed molybdenum producer said its 2007 net profit was
Yuan 2.241 billion ($319 million), up 48% compared with Yuan 1.515 billion
reported in 2006. Its turnover totaled Yuan 5.898 billion, up 54% compared
with Yuan 3.826 billion reported in 2006.
The company said increased turnover was mainly due to the completion of a
renovation and upgrade project of 5,000 mt/day at the No. 3 Ore Processing
Branch in July 2007, leading to increased flotation capacity.
The rising prices of molybdenum oxide and ferromolybdenum also saw
revenue grow in 2007, the company said.
In 2007, China Molybdenum sold a total of 13,134 mt of ferromolybdenum,
marking a rise of 104% compared with the previous year. Its sales volume of
molybdenum oxide, however, was down to 4,483 mt, down 8.7% year on year
compared with 4,911 mt in 2006.
However, despite lower sales volume of molybdenum oxide, its average
selling price in 2007 was Yuan 255,540/mt, up from Yuan 192,727/mt in 2006,
affected by a higher export tariff.

China Molybdenum Expects Supply Shortfall to Last (Update1)

April 11 (Bloomberg) -- China Molybdenum Co., the nation's second-biggest producer of the metal used to toughen steel, said a global shortfall will last for three years because of rising demand for corrosion-resistant oil pipes.

Mines in Inner Mongolia and Henan province in China, as well as in Chile will ``take time'' to expand capacity, which means a shortfall may not ease until 2010, Wu Wenjun, executive director manager, said yesterday in an interview.

Molybdenum has jumped more than fivefold since early 2004 as energy companies increase output and China built more pipelines. Chinese production of corrosion-resistant steel may jump 23 percent this year, Macquarie Group Ltd. said.

The ``global molybdenum market will be in deficit in the next few years,'' Zhang Xi, an analyst at UOB-Kay Hian Ltd., said today by phone in Hong Kong. ``Increased supply in China will also be digested by demand from steelmakers.''

China, the world's largest producer of the silvery-white metal, imposed an export quota last June as demand from its steelmakers surged.

Wu's forecast differs from Merrill Lynch & Co., which April 1 said prices may fall in 2009 to $25 a pound when supply catches up with demand. The metal may trade at $34 a pound this year, according to the mean estimate of three analysts surveyed by Bloomberg today. It has averaged $32.83 a pound this year.

China Molybdenum fell 3 cents, or 0.4 percent, to HK$7.82 in Hong Kong.

Rising Demand

``The supply shortfall won't change too much in 2008 and 2009, and may last until 2010,'' Wu said over the telephone. ``Rising demand for oil pipes will drive consumption for molybdenum.''

The Luoyang, Henan province-based company plans to increase production by about 10 percent this year, and is seeking acquisitions, Wu said, without elaborating.

China, which overtook the U.S. to become the world's biggest producer of molybdenum last year, mined 147,000 metric tons of the ore in 2007, equivalent to about 66,300 tons of the metal, Xu Aihua, an analyst at Beijing Antaike Information Development Co., said today.

Chinese exports of molybdenum metal will be limited to 26,300 tons in 2008, the Ministry of Commerce said Oct. 30. The ministry may raise the quota later, Xu said.

The government should also cap the nation's output growth of molybdenum at 15 percent this year, especially at smaller mines, because the export quota would increase domestic supply, Xu also said.

Molybdenum prices in China may fall this year because of the quota, Zhang Ronghai, a stainless steel raw-material trading manager with Baosteel Group Corp., said yesterday in an interview. Baosteel is the nation's second-biggest producer of the rust-resistant alloy.

WISCO inks long term ferromoly buying pacts

It is reported that International Economic & Trading Corporation under Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation has singed long term purchasing contracts with China Molybdenum Co Ltd and Jinduicheng Molybdenum Company Ltd.

Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation has inked purchasing contract with China Molybdenum Company Ltd early this year. Price and purchase volume of FeMo from Jinduicheng Molybdenum Company Limited is under negotiation with the contract set to be signed in the first half of this year.

The contract with China Molybdenum Company Limited can lock up annual supply of over 10,000 tonnes and lower purchase cost of several million Yuan.

FeMo is an important raw material for steelmaking. WISCO now demands some 24 million tonnes of FeMo every year. The figure is increasing and is expected to double this year.

Fazit
Von den vorgestellten chinesischen
Rohstoffaktien ist eigentlich nur
China Rare Earth ein klarer Kaufkandidat.
Yanzhou Coal Mining,
China Molybdenum, Zijin Mining
und Zhaojin Mining sind unter
charttechnischen Gesichtspunkten
ein Kauf beziehungsweise Kandidaten
für die Watchliste. Bei Petrochina
mahnt die Entwicklung des
Ölpreises zur Vorsicht, hier müsste
es eigentlich zu einer größeren Korrektur
kommen. Und bei China
Shenhua Energy ist schlichtweg die
Bewertung zu hoch.

China Molybdenum Says Shortage to Support Prices (Update1)

Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- China Molybdenum Co., the nation's second-biggest producer of the metal used in steelmaking, expects a global shortage of 2,000 metric tons this year will prevent prices from falling.

Production may decline in Chile and China, ensuring that a deficit will last for ``quite a while,'' General Manager Wu Wenjun said today at a conference in Hong Kong. Wu in April forecast a deficit will last until 2010.

The estimated shortage, about 2 percent of global output in the first half, may bolster molybdenum prices that have already jumped fivefold in the past five years as demand for oil steel pipes surges. China may raise demand of the metal by 24 percent this year, larger rival Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co. said in June.

``The domestic market will maintain rapid growth in the second half,'' Wu said.

Molybdenum prices have gained 4.7 percent this year to $33.75 a pound, according to Metal Bulletin.

Shares of China Molybdenum gained 5.7 percent, the biggest increase since July 9, to close at HK$5.05 in Hong Kong. China Molybdenum's shares have fallen 65 percent this year, compared with a 23 percent decline in the benchmark Hang Seng Index.

The Luoyang-based company this week posted a 13 percent gain in first-half profit.

Domestic Sales

China Molybdenum plans to raise domestic sales as export tariffs reduce earnings from overseas, Wu said. Chinese stainless steelmakers may add production in the second half, he said. China Molybdenum also will increase sales to the heavy machine and military industries.

China's stainless-steel producers, led by Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. and Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., only produced 2.51 million tons of the rust-proof alloy in the first half, compared with 6.67 million tons for the whole of 2007.

China Molybdenum gets 77 percent of its domestic sales from Taigang, Baoshan, Zhangjiagang Posco Co. and Wuhan Iron & Steel Co., Wu said.

The company's production of molybdenum concentrate rose 17 percent to 16,753.7 tons in the first half from a year ago, and molybdenum oxides gained 28 percent to 13,021.8 tons, the company said in its interim report on Aug. 24.

It plans to make 17,000 tons of the concentrates and 12,000 tons of molybdenum oxides in the second half, Wu said.

Acquistions

China Molybdenum is also seeking acquisitions of rare and precious metal resources in territories including Inner Mongolia, Canada and Australia, Wu said, without giving details. The company also plans to increase tungsten production, he said.

China's apparent consumption for molybdenum surged 72 percent in the first half of this year to 11,807 tons from a year earlier, the company said Aug. 24.

Apparent demand is calculated from output and net imports and excludes inventories held.

VINA DEL MAR, Chile, Sept 12 (Reuters) - China's ravenous consumption of industrial metals in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics may have seen demand growth peak in some metals, but the show is not over yet for molybdenum, an industry expert told Reuters this week.
Molybdenum, the metal used to add strength and shine to specialty steels, is one of the few industrial metals that has resisted a general commodities price retreat in recent months, and demand for specialty steels in China will support prices through 2010 at least.
Hardy Mohrbacher, a metallurgical engineer, steel expert and consultant to the global steel business, said on the sidelines of an annual gathering of the global molybdenum industry in Vina del Mar that China is virtually locked-in to a host of giant projects that will need steels with molybdenum content.
"There's no way around it," said Mohrbacher, who holds a professorship at Peking University in Beijing. "What is driving China are these big infrastructure projects, and they have to be done in order to keep general industrialization of China sustainable. These large scale projects need high quality steels."
According to an article on the website of the International Iron and Steel Institute (www.worldsteel.org), at least 3 million tonnes of steel was used to build the stadiums, Olympic village and public transport projects in Beijing in the lead up to the games.
The Bird's Nest Stadium - made famous in likely the most stunning Olympic opening ceremonies yet - is made of 45,000 tonnes of steel plate.
"The Olympics are just one example, but there are a lot of projects still coming up," said Mohrbacher, pointing at major, continued demand in China for more value-added steels.
"Strength demand of construction steel is further increasing... Corrosion resistance and buckling strength are demanded in the oil and gas industry," he said.
Mohrbacher estimates China steel demand at between 540 million and 580 million tonnes in 2010, with more and more of that demanding molybdenum to give it attributes of strength, hardenability, weldability, toughness, elevated temperature strength, and corrosion resistance.
The oil and gas industry alone will lay 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) of submarine pipeline by 2010. After 2010, China is seen extending its railway by 17,000 kilometers.
THE MILITARY QUESTION
"I don't think that you can stop that that easily anymore," said Mohrbacher. "This just has to happen. There is so much momentum in this development that it just will go on."
He said molybdenum consumption could rise from about 14,298 tonnes in 2007 to at least 16,307 tonnes in 2010, according to conservative estimates. On the outside, he saw China's moly consumption at 22,266 tonnes annually in two years' time.
China has since the middle of the last century set out its development plans in five-year slots, making it easier to quantify official projects like the building of major pipelines or throughways.
China is currently in its 11th five-year development plan, which ends in 2010.
But due to the massive state apparatus, the big question mark for much of China's metals consumption has been military defense spending, where potential molybdenum demand is huge.
"The major unknown is what goes into defense and defense-related projects as the Chinese build a fleet, submarines and so on," he said.

Chinese molybdenum concentrate prices firm up on tight supply

China's domestic molybdenum concentrate prices appear to have firmed up
this week as supply continues to tighten, industry sources said.

Molybdenum concentrate prices were mostly heard between Yuan
1,700($248)-1,900/mtu, up about Yuan 100-150/mtu from the previous week.

Sources said supply was tight as most mines in Huludao in China's
Liaoning province had stopped production, as previous prices at Yuan
1,500-1,700/mtu were too close to their costs. In addition, sources said that
it was hard to work in the cold winter weather.

Sources noted that owners had been selling from their current stockpiles.
With mines closing and no replenishment of stockpiles in sight, supply has
tightened.

As a result, Chinese domestic ferromolybdenum prices have continued to
inch up with most indications ranging widely between Yuan 130,000/mt and Yuan
180,000/mt ex-plant, although no apparent increase in domestic demand was
heard. Prices were heard below Yuan 130,000/mt previously. Molybdenum
concentrate is the raw material used to produce ferromolybdenum.

Chinese domestic molybdenum oxide prices also appeared to firmed up in
view of limited molybdenum oxide with indications at Yuan 1,950-2,000/mtu, up
about Yuan 100/mtu from the previous week.

Meanwhile, Chinese spot molybdenum oxide and ferromolybdenum export trade
remained stuck in the doldrums due to an extreme lack of overseas buying
interest in view of uncertainty over the worsening state of the global
economy, industry sources said.

Offers for molybdenum oxide were heard steady between $10/lb and $11/lb
on a FOB basis and ferromolybdenum at $24-26/kg.

Jinduicheng Molybdenum acquires 65% equity of sister firm

Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd (601958.SH) finished Tuesday its purchase for 65 percent shares of the Ruyang subsidiary of its controlling shareholder Jinduicheng Molybdenum Group Co., Ltd. (JDCMMC).

Earlier in 2007, Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd. signed a share-transfer agreement with its controlling shareholder JDCMMC to buy 65 percent shares of JDCMMC's Ruyang subsidiary in central China's Henan province.

On Tuesday this week, Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd. paid the remaining 316.6887 million yuan according to the agreement.

JDCMMC is the biggest complex of molybdenum mining, dressing, smelting, processing, research and trade in Asia, as well as the leading company of China's molybdenum industry.

TCM could become world’s fourth-largest molybdenum producer in 2009

Canadian molybdenum producer Thompson Creek Metals is focused on raising its global profile with planned production increases on a significant scale even as most other producers are cutting back.
TCM last year was the world’s eighth-largest molybdenum producer.
If the company meets its 2009 production forecast, however, it would vault to fourth-largest, ahead of Rio Tinto/Kennecott and in close competition with Grupo Mexico, currently the number three producer.
Rio Tinto/Kennecott produced 33.1 million lbs last year, but production is expected to be below that level for the next two years.
