Worldwide sales of semiconductors increased
40% in May from a year earlier, the
Semiconductor Industry Association
reported Friday.
The growth to $15.8 billion, from $11.3 billion in
May 1999, kept the industry on track to achieve
its mid-year prediction of 31% growth in 2000,
George Salise, the association`s president, said
in a prepared statement.
The association, which
represents U.S.-based
manufacturers, expects
growth of the
semiconductor industry to reach $195 billion in
2000 and to expand 25% to $244 billion in
2001. It predicts sales will increase 14% to
$279 billion in 2002.
Microprocessors and DRAMS, which are used
in personal computers, as well as standard
linear, field programmable logic devices, or
FPLDs, digital signal processors, or DSPs, and
Flash memory, which are commonly found in
communications products, all contributed
strongly to growth, the association said.
Molly Marr, association spokeswoman, said
demand created by strong growth of the
telecommunications industry has helped the
semiconductor industry`s growth fall in line thus
far with SIA`s expectation that 2000 would be
"an exceptional year." Sales of Flash memory
increased 185% in May, and sales of FPLD and
DSP grew 88% and 50% respectively,
according to Marr.
Although the semiconductor industry "as a
whole is largely growing," Marr said sales of
microprocessors for personal computers are
"still very strong, but probably not growing as
fast." Microprocessors, which experienced 14%
year-to-year growth in May, are about half of
the industry `s business, she said.
The worldwide growth of 40% far exceeded the
12% year-to-year growth in May 1998, when
the industry was hurt by the Asian financial
crisis, supply-and-demand problems and an
American economic recession, Marr said.
Year-to-year sales grew 46% in Asia Pacific
markets and 44% in Japan. They increased
33% in the Americas and 40% in Europe.
Month-to-month sales in May, which accrued
worldwide growth of 4%, increased 4% and 3%
in Asia Pacific and Japan respectively. They
grew 6% in the Americas and 2% in Europe.

Absatzsteigerung von 106 Prozent und analoge Standardchips mit einem Anstieg von 70 Prozent.

Spitzenreiter bleibt der Raum Asien-Pazifik; hier wurde ein Volumen von 4,26 Mrd.US-Dollar erreicht
- ein Anstieg von 52,8 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Dicht dahinter folgt Japan mit einem
Umsatzanstieg von 50,8 Prozent auf 3,71 Mrd. US-Dollar. Beide Regionen legten im Vergleich zum
Vormonat Mai um 5,1 Prozent zu. Ebenfalls zu den Wachstumsmotoren gehörte Europa mit einem
Anstieg von 48,1 Prozent auf 3,44 Mrd. US-Dollar, das noch vor Nordamerika (+42,7 Prozent; 5,23
Mrd. US-Dollar) rangierte.
Auch wenn der Monatsbericht der SIA noch keine Abkühlung des Halbleitermarktes erkennen läßt,
der Aktienmarkt ist derzeitig ziemlich verunsichert. Der Philadelphia-Semiconductor-Index hat in den
letzten Tagen mächtig Federn lassen müssen und auch heute verliert der Index 6,58 Prozent auf
891,42 Punkte. Damit nähert man sich allmählich dem Jahrestief (Monat Mai) von 810
Index-Punkten.

Spitzenreiter bleibt der Raum Asien-Pazifik; hier wurde ein Volumen von 4,26 Mrd.US-Dollar erreicht
- ein Anstieg von 52,8 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Dicht dahinter folgt Japan mit einem
Umsatzanstieg von 50,8 Prozent auf 3,71 Mrd. US-Dollar. Beide Regionen legten im Vergleich zum
Vormonat Mai um 5,1 Prozent zu. Ebenfalls zu den Wachstumsmotoren gehörte Europa mit einem
Anstieg von 48,1 Prozent auf 3,44 Mrd. US-Dollar, das noch vor Nordamerika (+42,7 Prozent; 5,23
Mrd. US-Dollar) rangierte.
Auch wenn der Monatsbericht der SIA noch keine Abkühlung des Halbleitermarktes erkennen läßt,
der Aktienmarkt ist derzeitig ziemlich verunsichert. Der Philadelphia-Semiconductor-Index hat in den
letzten Tagen mächtig Federn lassen müssen und auch heute verliert der Index 6,58 Prozent auf
891,42 Punkte. Damit nähert man sich allmählich dem Jahrestief (Monat Mai) von 810
Index-Punkten.
Das ganze Gerede vonwegen "der Chip Zyklus hat den Zenit erreicht"
ist Schnee von Gestern!!

Semiconductor stocks got a nice boost Tuesday following
positive comments from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.
"We remain positive on the sector," said analyst Mark
Edelstone. "We believe the cycle has another 18 to 24
months to run. Investor sentiment has been too negative,
and stock price valuations have reached levels that have
been too low. We expect these stocks to have a significant
rally."
Semi´s (wireless) is the place to be!!!

and up 50 pct this year. EPS grew at a average of 32 pct a year
over the last five years and is expected to grow at a 35 pct
pace over the next three to five years. Analysts say a key to
that growth is that 65 to 70 pct of the company`s products are
proprietary.
The company, which has been added to the S&P Midcap
index, is viewed as a potential takeover target.
Semtech deals in analog technology, producing semiconductors
used in devices that control things such as lights, temperature
and pressure as power management devices. Its customers
include some of the biggest names in telecommunications and
computer technology. Its revenue sources break down to
computers 40 pct, communications 32 pct, industrial 22 pct.,
with telecommunications its greatest growth area, expected to
increase 40 to 45 pct in the next two years.
"If you go back five or six years ago, CEO John Poe said,
"nearly seventy percent of our business was military and
aerospace. We`ve fundamentally changed our focus into
commercial business, primarily focusing on communications
and computers, and the high-end industrial marketplace." Now,
only about five pct of SMTC`s business is military and
aerospace.
Poe said the company`s greatest growth area is in products for
the communications infrastructure base build-out.

Nachdem Intel heute sagt ,dass die Aussichten OK !! sind wird sich heute zeigen wie die Chip Aktien darauf reagieren.
