Freeport halts production at Indonesian mine

PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan, the largest listed copper producer, has been forced to shut down all operations at its Grasberg mining operation, highlighting the risks of deteriorating labour relations in the mining industry.
Concerns about a fall in production and supply at Grasberg in Indonesia, the world’s second largest copper mine, underpinned the red metal, with the price of copper for three month delivery on the London Metal Exchange rising over 1 per cent to $7,660 a tonne in early European trading. Although copper later fell 0.7 per cent to $7,506 a tonne on concerns about the global economy, it saw support at the $7,500 level.
Freeport, headquartered in Arizona in the US, has operated at “minimum production” since 12,000 out of 23,000 workers went on strike last month demanding higher pay at Grasberg. The company also faces problems in Peru where its workers’ union has broken off talks on a new labour contract during a strike at Cerro Verde mine, which supplies about 2 per cent of world output. Freeport’s shares were down 4 per cent at $35.27 in New York mid-morning trading.
At Grasberg, at least five people have died since the strike began, including two men who were shot by police trying to control a crowd of protesting workers.
Freeport said it must halt its activities due to the unrest. It gave no date for a resumption of activities. “These production activities can only be carried out when it is safe for employees to work, facilities are protected from sabotage, and PT Freeport Indonesia communities are able to get necessary supplies. Until these conditions are met and maintained, PTFI must stop production activities,” it said.
The company is expected to update investors on the impact of its labour issues when it reports its third quarter results on Wednesday.
On the Grasberg operations, Freeport said over the past week “there have been numerous illegal activities and violent crimes committed,” including the blockage by striking workers of truck convoys carrying essential supplies, threats and intimidation of employees, trespassing and illegal use of company property.
The company called on authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible. It provided no description of what kind of sabotage had taken place, but said: “These activities must stop and civil order must be restored immediately,” it added.
Grasberg is one of the world’s largest single producers of both copper and gold, and contains the largest recoverable reserves of copper and the largest single gold reserve in the world, Freeport says. It began production from open pit mines in 1990 and in 2015 plans to begin underground mining.
