Niobium find puts Globe on the map Font Size: Decrease Increase
Kevin Andrusiak | March 31, 2008
PERTH-based Globe Uranium is poised to confirm it has discovered a large niobium deposit in Malawi.
The news comes as Globe unveils its maiden JORC resource for its wholly owned, multi-resource Kanyika project in the east African state.
The niobium resource is expected to be around 55 million tonnes, more than double the company's initial expectations of 25 million tonnes.
The timing could not be better: niobium, like almost everything else used in steel making, is in hot demand.
Since 2002 demand has more than doubled, growing at 19.5 per cent per annum.
Actual niobium content is expected to be around 340 million pounds, with a further 8 million tonnes of uranium.
More importantly, from the company's perspective, the niobium should account for more than two-thirds of the in-ground value of the project, which should run close to $US6 billion ($6.5 billion).
The company's current market capitalisation is just $16.8 million.
Niobium is an important additive in creating the high-strength steel commonly used in manufacturing cars.
About 85 per cent of all niobium ends up in the steel industry, with Brazilian firm CBMM dominating the market.
The ductile metal, which can triple the strength of steel, can also be used in nuclear industries and electronics.
Niobium is never found as a free agent, so Globe will have to use a chemical leaching process to separate it from the other elements at the envisaged Kanyika open pit operation.
A scoping study for the project is expected to be completed before the end of June.
Globe has held the project for a little over two years.
The miner is expected to seek a long-term offtake partner to help finance construction of Kanyika, where annual revenues could top $US150 million.
Production of niobium would be around 4.5 tonnes per annum, giving Globe a 4 per cent share of the total world market, should mining begin in about four years' time.
Recently commissioned research on Globe by Aegis suggested that the company had an advantage because Kanyika had not been subjected to modern exploration techniques.
"The grades of U308 are lower than what would be expected for a pure uranium mine, but are buoyed by potentially economic niobium and tantalum values," Aegis wrote.
"Mineralisation is confirmed over a strike length of at least 3.5km, with substantial intercept thicknesses.
"If Kanyika is shown to be economic it will be mined as a niobium/tantalum deposit with a U308 by-product credit."
Last week, Canadian miner Iamgold said that demand for ferroniobium, a strengthening alloy used in steel manufacturing which it produces from its niobium mine, is seen as strong for at least the next two years.
It operates the Niobec underground mine, 15km northwest of Chicoutimi in the province of Quebec. The 2455ha property is North America's only source of pyrochlore, the primary niobium ore, and one of only three major producers of niobium

U3O8 Schnitt 150ppm --> 150ppm U3O8
T2a5 Schnitt 150ppm --> 100ppm U3O8 (50 US$/lb)
Niob Schnitt 2500ppm -> 400ppm U3O8 (12 US$/lb)
Zirc Schnitt 3000ppm -> 30ppm U3O8 (1 US/lb)

Mining consultant Runge Limited is well advanced with estimation of the maiden JORC-categorised resource at Kanyika. This will be reported by the end of march, 2008 ..."
