De Beers confident talks will deliver a Botswana diamond deal

GABORONE — De Beers is confident of maintaining its long-standing partnership with Botswana, a company official told Reuters on Thursday, but said some of the negotiations to agree new terms were complex.

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Sunday threatened to walk away from talks on the extension of De Beers’ mining rights in the country unless it got a larger share of revenues.

De Beers’ Vice President-Corporate Affairs (Global Sightholder Sales) Otsile Mabeo told Reuters by email the company was “confident that our successful partnership will continue” and said that “the arrangement must make economic and strategic sense for both parties.”

Anglo American Plc’s De Beers is in talks with the Botswana government to extend mining rights that expire in 2029, as well as a 2011 diamond sales agreement that expires in June this year.

“It’s important to note that our negotiations span more than just the sales agreement, they also include the future mining rights for Debswana, which are more complex and require more time to land on the finer details,” Mabeo said.

Under the current deal, Debswana – a 54 year-old joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government – sells 75% of its output to De Beers, while 25% goes to the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company. Botswana supplies 70% of De Beers’ rough diamonds.

Anglo American senior leadership change

15 February, 2023 - Anglo American announces that Natascha Viljoen, CEO of its 79% owned subsidiary Anglo American Platinum Limited, has decided to take up her next career opportunity outside the Anglo American group. Natascha has been CEO of Anglo American’s PGMs business since April 2020 and will join Newmont Corporation, the US-based mining company, as its Chief Operating Officer upon completion of her notice period of up to 12 months.

Natascha will continue to serve as CEO of Anglo American Platinum and as a member of Anglo American’s Group Management Committee until that time.

Freeport Indonesia suspends some work at Grasberg mine after floods

Freeport-McMoRan said it expected first-quarter 2023 sales to be lower than the previous outlook provided in January for 900 million pounds of copper and 300,000 ounces of gold, but it did not provide updated figures.

Freeport Indonesia's daily output was nearly 5 million pounds of copper and 5,000 ounces of gold, the company said late on Monday.

Preliminary estimates indicate operations can be restored by the end of February, the company said, adding that there was no impact to PT Freeport Indonesia's long-term plans.

The company said it had freed 14 employees trapped in an office building because of the flood, but added there were no casualties in the recovery effort launched on Saturday.

"Some of the concentrate processing plant had mudflow and several sections of the mine road were damaged," Freeport Indonesia Chief Executive Tony Wenas said in a statement on Sunday, adding that the situation was under control.

London copper rises in cautious trade ahead of U.S. inflation data

Copper prices in London rose on Monday, but hovered near a one-week low as market participants were cautious ahead of key U.S. inflation data release this week.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange edged up 0.3% to $8,887.50 a tonne by 0825 GMT, rebounding from a one-week low of $8,817 hit earlier in the session and following three consecutive weekly losses.

Copper prices have been tip-toeing around $8,800-$9,000 for a week, as markets weighed between a potential demand recovery from top consumer China and a stronger dollar caused by higher U.S. interest rates.

Acquisition of minority interest in Canada Nickel

8 February 2023 - Anglo American to acquire 9.9% of Canada Nickel, owner of the Crawford nickel project

Anglo American has agreed to acquire a 9.9% minority interest in Canada Nickel Company Inc. ("Canada Nickel"), which owns the Crawford nickel project in Ontario, Canada ("the Crawford project").

Anglo American will also provide technology expertise to the Crawford project and has the exclusive right to purchase up to 10% of recoveries of nickel concentrate, iron and chromium contained in the magnetite concentrates and any corresponding carbon credits from the Crawford project. Anglo American's equity funding will support Canada Nickel's work to complete the necessary permitting requirements to proceed with development of the project.

The investment is part of Anglo American's approach to expand its nickel product offering with additional battery-grade nickel for use in electric vehicles, complementing nickel production from Anglo American's PGMs mines in South Africa, as well as ferronickel from its nickel assets in Brazil which is mostly destined for the global stainless-steel industry.

Anglo American will apply its FutureSmart Mining™ technologies to ore samples from Canada Nickel , with the aim of assessing opportunities to improve processing recoveries and reduce the project's overall energy, emission and water footprint.

"Our in-depth product knowledge and portfolio of innovative technologies have the potential to provide a value-enhancing contribution to the development of the Crawford project, with the objective of unlocking additional supply of nickel to meet the world's growing demand for battery technology for electric transport", added Peter Whitcutt.

Located in a tier-one mining jurisdiction in Ontario, Canada, with optimal support infrastructure, the Crawford project is one of the largest undeveloped, bulk tonnage nickel sulphide resources in the world. If brought into production, the project is expected to play an important role in expanding the available supply of battery-grade nickel.

Petra Diamonds open to M&A deals, CEO says

CAPE TOWN, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Diamond miner Petra Diamonds (PDL.L) invited merger and acquisition proposals on Monday, with CEO Richard Duffy saying the industry would benefit from consolidation.

The diamond mining industry is dominated by Russia's Alrosa (ALRS.MM) on one hand, and Anglo American's (AAL.L) ddDe Beers on the other, with the remainder of the sector made up of various small mining firms including Petra.

"We have got opportunities to grow organically, but given that we are through this restructuring and we have a much more robust balance sheet, we would be willing to consider consolidation if it makes value sense," Duffy told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town.
