Mattel To Sell Learning Co. To Gores Tech Affiliate

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Mattel Inc. (MAT) signed a definitive agreement to sell its Learning Co. unit to an affiliate of Gores Technology Group. for a "contractual right to receive future consideration."
The sale is unlikely to net Mattel even 10% of the $3.5 billion it paid for the company 16 months ago, according to a Wall Street Journal article Friday.

The article said the deal may top Quaker Oats` 1997 sale of Snapple as one of the worst-ever corporate bungles. Quaker bought Snapple for $1.7 billion and sold it three years later for $300 million.
In a press release Friday, Mattel said it expects to record a loss from discontinued operations of $430 million from the sale.

The sale is part of a restructuring plan to "focus on growing core brands and lowering operating costs."
Mattel decided to sell Learning Co. in April after the unit lost nearly $300 million, and its woes resulted in the resignation of Mattel Chief Executive Jill Barad, and other senior executives, according to the Journal article.

Was da am Freitag abgegangen ist,hat mich geschockt.Wurde doch Mattel,
fast wie ein fauler Apfel behandelt.Der Kaufkurs haette schon bei Eroeffnung 14,60 Euro sein muessen.Was tun da einige "nette" Leute,sie verscherbeln Mattel zu 13,20-14,00-14,30-14,00.Warum wuerde ich gerne wissen?Entweder koennen da einige nicht rechnen($ in Euro),oder panikten einfach.In diesen schweren Zeiten,verkauft man doch keine Aktie wie Mattel!Die Aussichten fuer die Zukunft stimmen sehr optimistisch.Prognosen vom neuen CEO,sprechen fuer sich selbst.Mattel wird meiner Meinung nach,bald von mehreren US Analysten zum Kauf emfohlen werden.Was dann passiert,kann sich wohl jeder selbst ausrechnen.Den Giganten schlechthin,wie eine "spekulative Blase" zu behandeln,ist mehr als merkwuerdig.

RESEARCH ALERT-Merrill raises Mattel to buy
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch said on Thursday that it raised its rating on Mattel Inc. (NYSE:MAT - news), maker of Barbie and Hot Wheels cars, to buy from accumulate and raised the 12-month price target to $18.

Mattel`s products are performing well during holiday toy sale season, Merrill said.

Merrill analyst Hayley Kissell cut 2000 earnings per share estimates to 68 cents from 70 cents for adjusting foreign exchange and higher sales, general and administrative costs. Merrill`s 68 cents a share is higher than First Call/Thomson Financial`s 67 cents.

``Depressed stock price coupled with good sales trends should enable stock to carry momentum into traditional first quarter upswing period for toy stocks,`` Kissell said in a research note.

Changes at the company from new Chief Executive Bob Eckert support a long-term buy recommendation, Kissell said in the research note.

Longer-term, Mattel could trade into the $20`s as it continues to make progress, Kissell said.

kurs nicht gehalten werden.Schlußkurs 15,5$.
