LONDON and HAYWARD, Calif., January 24, 2001 - Certicom (Nasdaq: CERT; TSE: CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, and Symbian, the leading software platform provider for Wireless Information Devices (WIDs), today announced a partnership to enable Symbian-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions for next generation mobile phones. nur noch mal zum thema motorola.natürlich ist der teilweise rückzug(finanzielle)sehr herbe,aber das grassiert ja momentan in der tech branche,daß probleme des einen auch den anderen treffen.trotzdem bleibt motorola bei psion am ball(s. 1 teil) und psion selbst bleibt bei seinen zahlen für 2000.für 2001 gibt psion die auswirkungen mit voraussichtlichen -12 mill.pfund beim vorsteuergewinn an.

PSION PLC und Motorola Inc. beenden gemeinsame Entwicklung
Bad Homburg, 29.01.01 - Die PSION PLC und Motorola Inc. haben heute bekanntgegeben, dass die gemeinsame Entwicklung von Wireless Information Devices durch die hundertprozentige PSION-Tochter PSION Computers und den Motorola-Unternehmensbereich Personal Communications eingestellt wird.

Motorola wird sich zukünftig auf die bereits laufende Entwicklung eines multifunktionalen, mobilen Smartphones auf Basis der Symbian-Plattform konzentrieren, das 2002 auf den Markt kommen soll. Diese Entscheidung ist eine Konsequenz der kürzlich von Motorola angekündigten Massnahmen zur Straffung des Angebotsportfolios und Konzentration auf die Kernkompetenzen. Motorola vertritt weiterhin die Ansicht, dass die Symbian-Plattform grosses Potential bietet, um mit integrierten Systemen erfolgreich am Markt agieren zu können und wird daher auch in Zukunft in die Entwicklung und Vermarktung Symbian-basierter Geräte investieren. Motorola hält einen 21-prozentigen Anteil an Symbian und ist aktiv an der Planung der zukünftigen Entwicklung des Unternehmens beteiligt.

Die heutige Entscheidung hat keinen Einfluss auf andere gemeinsame Projekte zwischen Motorola und PSION. PSION TEKLOGIX wird die Zusammenarbeit mit Motorola in bezug auf Symbian-basierte Produkte für dedizierte industrielle Märkte im "Blue Collar"-Bereich fortsetzen.

Der PSION-Beitrag zur Entwicklung des ersten Produktes des gemeinsamen Programms - ein auf der sog. Quartz-Plattform von Symbian basierender Communicator - ist sehr weit fortgeschritten und liegt voll im Plan. PSION setzt die Entwicklung dieses Produktes fort und untersucht vor dem Hintergrund nunmehr deutlich höherer Entwicklungskosten und einer Produktvorstellung in der ersten Hälfte des Jahres 2002 gegenwärtig eine Reihe von Optionen, das Produkt zur Marktreife zu bringen. Die zwischen PSION und Motorola getroffene Vereinbarung über die Beendigung der Zusammenarbeit sieht u.a. vor, dass Motorola auf die Rückgabe von bereits an PSION gezahlten Geldern verzichtet und in Kürze weitere Zahlungen leisten wird. Darüber hinaus behält PSION bestimmte von Motorola in die Produktentwicklung eingebrachten geistigen Urheberrechte; im Gegenzug hat Motorola weiterhin Zugriff auf bestimmte Rechte in bezug auf den "Halla"-Prozessor von PSION.

Im Zusammenhang mit der heutigen Ankündigung von PSION und Motorola über die Beendigung des gemeinsamen Entwicklungsprogramms bestätigt die PSION PLC finanzielle Auswirkungen auf das laufende Geschäftsjahr 2001 und gibt ein Update für das zum 31. Dezember 2000 beendete Geschäftsjahr.

Gemäss der gemeinsamen Entwicklungsvereinbarung zwischen PSION und Motorola hat Motorola Zahlungen in Höhe von 7 Mio. US-Dollar an PSION geleistet; die Zahlung von 1 Mio. US-Dollar steht noch aus. Der Vertrag zur Beendigung der Zusammenarbeit sieht vor, dass Motorola auf die Rückzahlung der gesamten 8 Mio. US-Dollar verzichtet.

PSION schätzt, dass sich der Vorsteuergewinn von PSION Computers im Jahr 2001 durch die Einstellung der Zusammenarbeit um etwa 12 Mio. Pfund Sterling verringern wird. Jedoch haben diese Entwicklungen keinen Einfluss auf das Geschäftsjahr 2000. PSION Computers hat im vergangenen Jahr über eine halbe Million Einheiten verkauft, was einer Steigerung von 65% gegenüber 1999 entspricht. PSION bekräftigt, dass die Geschäftszahlen für Gesamtjahr 2000 bis zu 31. Dezember 2000 in Übereinstimmung mit der Planung liegen.

Psion - Allianz mit NEC

Der britische Hersteller von mobilen Kleincomputern Psion [ Kurs/Chart ] hat einen Vertrag mit NEC [Nasdaq: NIPNY Kurs/Chart ] über die Lieferung von Bluetooth-Software für die Handys und Computer des japanischen Elektronik-Giganten geschlossen. Der Bluetooth-Standard ermöglicht im Nahbereich die drahtlose Anbindung an Endgeräte.

Erste Marketingschritte wollen die Unternehmen in Europa einleiten. Serge Palaric von NEC: "Bluetooth-fähige Geräte werden die Art und Weise, wie wir kommunizieren, von Grund auf verändern – besonders auf Reisen. Unsere gemeinsamen Produkte werden für die gesamte Branche neue Standards setzen."

Handhelds: Siemens lizensiert Symbian-Software


Software für PDAs oder Mobiltelefone ist ein heiss umstrittener Markt. Erstens verspricht er durch die Fortschritte des drahtlosen Internets (WAP, GPRS, UMTS) riesige Wachstumszahlen, andererseits sind die Claims noch nicht so deutlich abgesteckt wie bei den Schreibtisch-Rechnern.

Gerade das Betriebssystem Symbian des britischen Computerherstellers Psion hat gute Chancen, künftig zum Windows für Handys zu werden.

Jetzt hat Psion einen weiteren starken Partner dazugewonnen. Siemens hat mit Psion eine Lizenzvereinbarung abgeschlossen. Damit werden künftige Handhelds und Handys aus dem Hause Siemens mit dem Symbian-Betriebssystem laufen.

Notbremse: Psion strukturiert um
(tecChannel.de) PDA-Hersteller Psion zieht Konsequenzen aus seiner angespannten Finanzlage und legt drei Abteilungen zusammen, um Kosten zu sparen. Als Folge der Umstrukturierung werden 20 Prozent der Belegschaft entlassen.
Psion vereint nun die Sparten Psion Computers, Psion Connect und InfoMedia. Der Name der neuen Abteilung: Psion Digital Solutions. Ein deutscher Psion-Sprecher begründete diese Maßnahme mit Kosteneinsparungen; man wolle Synergieeffekte nutzen und auf diese Weise den Verwaltungsapparat straffen, sagte er gegenüber tecChannel.de. Die gesteigerte Effizienz hat aber ihren Preis. Sie wird etwa 20 Prozent der Mitarbeiter den Arbeitsplatz kosten. Genaue Zahlen nannte der Sprecher aber nicht.
Psion hofft, durch die Umstrukturierungsmaßnahmen, die etwa 11 Millionen Pfund (etwa 33 Millionen Mark) kosten sollen, noch in diesem Jahr 17 Millionen Pfund und im Jahr darauf 7 Millionen Pfund einzusparen. Psion musste im Geschäftsjahr 2000 einen Verlust vor Steuern von 1,4 Millionen Pfund (etwa 4,2 Millionen Mark) hinnehmen, obwohl der Umsatz mit 220 Millionen Pfund um 46 Prozent höher lag als im Vorjahr. Als Gründe gab Psion steigende Preise von Komponenten, die Schwäche von Pfund und Euro gegenüber dem Dollar sowie die Integration des aufgekauften kanadischen Rivalen Teklogix an.
Ende Januar erst erlitt Psion einen herben Rückschlag, als sich Motorola aus der gemeinsamen Entwicklung eines stiftbasierten PDAs zurückzog (wir berichteten ). Das Unternehmen gilt seither bei Analysten als potenzieller Übernahmekandidat . Der deutsche Psion-Sprecher betonte aber gegenüber tecChannel.de, dass Psion trotz des Ausstiegs von Motorola weiterhin an der Entwicklung des Smartphones "Odin" mit festhalten wolle. Odin basiert auf dem Quartz-Referenzdesign des Symbian-Konsortiums und soll Mobiltelfon und Organizer verschmelzen.
Der Sprecher stellte damit den Bericht eines amerikanischen Nachrichtenmagazins richtig, das mit der Überschrift "Psion drops new product" aufgemacht hatte. Psion suche derzeit nach einem neuen Partner aus dem Telekommunikationsbereich, mit dem man das Quartz-Gerät zu Ende entwickeln könne. Das Unternehmen habe seinen Teil bereits getan und die Organizer-Hardware des Geräts sei fertig. Verhandlungen mit neuen Partnern für die Mobilfunkeinheit des PDA seien schon im Gange, sagte er. Namen nannte der Sprecher allerdings nicht.
Gleichzeitig zeigte er sich zuversichtlich, dass Psion insbesondere durch die Übernahme von Teklogix die Weichen für eine rosige Zukunft gestellt habe. Psion Teklogix ist die umsatzstärkste Einheit des Unternehmens und für industrielle Handhelds und Datenfunklösungen zuständig. Der Psion-Sprecher verwies in diesem Zusammenhang auf Großaufträge von Volkswagen, Skoda und Volvo. Die drei Unternehmen haben vor kurzem ein neues Supply-Chain-Management-System für die optimierte Lagerhaltung vorgestellt. Die Architektur basiert auf Psion Teklogix Handheld- und Fahrzeug-Datenfunkterminals, die sich laut Psion online mit dem zentralen SAP R/3-System verbinden lassen.
Psion sieht in Unternehmenslösungen den größten Wachstumsmotor für die Zukunft. Auch von der neuen Sparte Psion Digital Solutions erhofft sich das Unternehmen in Zukunft schwarze Zahlen. Ob sich Psion allerdings mit seinen EPOC-Handhelds gegen die übermächtige Palm OS- und Windows CE-Konkurrenz behaupten kann, muss sich erst noch erweisen. In punkto Marktanteile jedenfalls sieht es zur Zeit nicht gut für Psion aus. Laut dem Marktforschungsinstitut Canalys.com sank dieser in Westeuropa im letzten Jahr von 17,5 Prozent auf 8,9 Prozent. Getrieben von einem anhaltend steigenden Markterfolg des PSION revo und des PSION Serie 5mx über alle Marktsegmente hat PSION Computers mit rund 500.000 verkauften Einheiten ihrer Organiser- und Handheld-Produktpalette im vergangenen Geschäftsjahr ihr bisher bestes Absatzergebnis erzielt.

Auf der Grundlage eines hervorragend aufeinander abgestimmten Produktangebots sowie der Erschliessung neuer, richtungsweisender Anwendungs- und Einsatzfelder hat sich der Bereich Central Europe im Berichtsjahr als einer der stärksten Wachstumsmotoren des weltweiten PSION-Organiser- und Handheld-Geschäftes positioniert. Auch in der Schweiz, wo die enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem langjährigen Exklusivpartner Excom AG eine solide Basis für zukünftige Markterfolge bildet, wurde das vergangene Geschäftsjahr überaus erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

Gruppenweite Restrukturierung in DACH bereits umgesetzt

Im Zuge der gruppenweit initiierten Restrukturierung, in deren Rahmen die Töchter PSION Computers, PSION Connect und PSION InfoMedia zur neuen Division PSION Digital Solutions zusammengefasst werden, hat die Region Central Europe bereits sichtbare Akzente gesetzt. Schon zu Beginn dieses Jahres hat die deutschsprachige Gruppe unter Hans Stadler diese Zusammenlegung vollzogen sowie integrierte, hocheffiziente Marketing- und Vertriebskanäle geschaffen. "Neben einer deutlichen Kostenreduzierung erzielen wir durch die Integration vor allem eine massive Stärkung der Innovationskraft, eine höhere Synergie der Potenziale und kürzere Reaktionszeiten auf Marktanforderungen und -entwicklungen", beschreibt Stadler die verstärkte Schlagkraft der zusammengelegten Einheiten.

Mit den Partnern aus dem Bereich Netzbetreiber bzw. Service Provider aus der Telekommunikation wie T-Mobil, debitel, MaxMobil (A), Orange (CH) und Swisscom (CH) sowie den Retail-Partnern MediaMarkt, Saturn, ProMarkt, Niedermeyer (A), Steiner (CH) und Mobilzone (CH) sieht Stadler den Bereich Central Europe für das laufende Geschäftsjahr hervorragend gerüstet. Volkswagen Installs Psion Teklogix Handhelds And Software In Germany






Psion Teklogix hand-held and vehicle-mounted terminals with TekRF (Tm) enhance accuracy across all VW inventory, logistics and transportation operations

March 13, 2001—Psion Teklogix announced today that it has completed installation of a new wireless logistics system for automotive giant Volkswagen AG. The system, based on Psion Teklogix radio frequency (RF) data terminals and its TekRF interface software, extends the SAP (R) Logistics Execution System (TM) (SAP LES (TM)) solution in use at Volkswagen AG across its German warehousing. This is, to date, the largest RF deal for Psion Teklogix in Europe. The architecture, comprising more than 750 Psion Teklogix vehicle and hand-held terminals and TekRF software has enabled Volkswagen to dramatically enhance accuracy and overall productivity across all inventory, logistics and transportation operations.

The new system gives VW users real-time online connectivity with the centralised SAP R/3 (R) business solution across several large industrial sites. Now all deliveries can be scanned and tracked in real-time at every point from when they arrive at the warehouse until the point of shipping. This has both heightened accuracy on tracking all deliveries and allowed urgent deliveries to be given priority almost immediately after request.

Volkswagen required a system that would allow users across all internal and external logistics centres, including those at VW Europe’s largest dispatch centre in Kassel, to send and receive data in real-time with the SAP R/3 solution in Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters. Psion Teklogix was able to provide rugged hand-held and truck-mounted terminals with integrated scanners. In addition, Psion Teklogix’ TekRF middleware allows communication with the central SAP R/3 solution, extending its functionality to the wireless mobile workforce. The majority of the Teklogix 7030 terminals will be based in Volkswagen’s main dispatch centre in Kassel where they will be used to scan and track the 150, 000 daily transactions covering over 900 tonnes of individual parts from over 240,000 different product lines.

“With many internal and external warehousing sites all across Germany it had become increasingly important for Volkswagen that the centralised IT system can determine where any part is at any time. The Psion Teklogix’ TekRF wireless solution now in place meets these needs perfectly,” said a spokesperson for Volkswagen. “It allows real-time data communications between SAP R/3 at the headquarters and co-workers in the warehouses at Baunatal, Ingolstadt (AUDI), Neckars-ulm, as well as five external international transporting companies. The new solution has enhanced overall productivity by providing exceptional accuracy in knowing where every part is at any given time and also knowing that the right parts are reaching the right locations.”

CeBIT, Hannover, March 22nd 2001- IBM and Symbian - the world`s leading software platform supplier for next-generation mobile phones - today announced new software that will help make Smartphone devices an integral part of today`s wireless infrastructure. The new offering will take key components from IBM`s Tivoli, Lotus and DB2 data management software brands to enable enterprises to extend existing business-critical applications to mobile professionals using Symbian-based devices - such as Ericsson`s future communicator devices and the Nokia 9210 Communicator. Psion Teklogix Technology Automates Compaq’s Refurbishment Center

TekRF™ Extends SAP® R/3® Business Solution to Mobile Workers

Psion Teklogix, a global provider of wireless and Internet-based mobile data transaction systems and services, today announced that it has completed installation of a new wireless logistics solution including its TekRF system, which has gone live at Compaq Computer Corporation’s Refurbishment Center. The system is similar to three others installed for Compaq sites at its Houston headquarters, including the original system at a raw material inventory warehouse. Psion Teklogix was able to meet Compaq’s tight implementation schedule for this site with planning starting in October 2000 and the system going online in February 2000

“In order to fix, test and ship out product to our customers faster, we wanted to complement our SAP® R/3® -based solution with radio frequency (RF) communications and barcode data collection,” explains Grover Edmiston, Director of Operations for Compaq`s Refurbishment Center" “As a technician determines the need for components, the request appears on an associate’s RF terminal for picking and quick delivery. By controlling inventory in real time and increasing labor efficiencies, we accelerate turnaround.”

“Expansion into Compaq’s refurbishment facilities is a result of our strong partnership with Compaq and the foresight of the original design teams to create a scaleable solution that can be rolled throughout the Compaq enterprise,” emphasizes Duncan Smith, Psion Teklogix Integration Services Group vice president. “Compaq continues to leverage its investment in Psion Teklogix products by integrating TekRF to facilitate smoother operations and increase productivity.”

“This system is similar in core functionality to systems in other Compaq facilities but we did require some modifications,” Edmiston adds. “Since the software is flexible, it only took a modest development effort to rework the existing TekRF transaction set to suit the business environment. The warehouse associates are very happy with the system.”

Compaq is planning to roll out further mobile functionality later this year using TekRF and it’s Active Design Wizards to extend the mySAP.com® e-business platform. Future rollouts may include integration with the Compaq iPAQÔ Pocket PC to take full advantage of Compaq’s w-business solutions.

Psion welcomes Digizone, new digital radio wireless data service


UBC Media Group plc and GWR Group plc announce world`s first commercial Digital Radio wireless data service -

UBC Media Group plc ("UBC") and GWR Group plc ("GWR") today announce that they have formed a joint venture company "The Digizone Limited" ("Digizone") and have launched the world`s first commercial digital radio data service on the national multiplex Digital One.

The Digizone service, available today to anyone with a data capable digital radio receiver, already contains a wireless news service from ITN, a new and exclusive cartoon games service from The Cartoon Network and companion data services to national radio services Classic FM and Core. The services utilise digital radio`s capability to transmit data services as well as audio at speeds of up to 200kbps, faster than any currently available technology. The Psion WaveFinder, launched last November, is the first device capable of receiving such services and operates as a PC peripheral, allowing fast data services to be downloaded wirelessly to a PC. WaveFinder is currently priced at under £200 in an effort to encourage a mass market for digital radio.

The Digizone will be a 50/50 joint venture between the partners with UBC Media Group`s Unique Interactive subsidiary providing the design and implementation of the new service under a service agreement.

The potential for data services on future digital radio devices is currently energising the sector.

Mit PhotoView gibt es von Psion eine neue Software für das Psion netBook
und die Serie 5mx/5mx PRO vor, mit der einfach und sehr bedienerfreundlich
unterwegs Email-Bildanhänge und digitale Fotos betrachtet, verwaltet, bis
zu einem gewissen Grad bearbeitet und direkt per Email wieder versandt
werden können. PhotoView beherrscht die gängigen digitalen Bildformate
JPG, BMP, GIF, PCX und TIF. Durch die Unterstützung dieser Formate, die
nicht nur auf Windows Systemen gebräuchlich sind, wird es möglich,
digitale Fotos auch mit anderen Rechnerwelten, wie z.B. Apple Mac,
auszutauschen.

PhotoView bietet nach dem Start zunächst eine Vorschau (Mosaik), in der
beispielsweise die digitalen Fotos übersichtlich als "Thumbnails"
dargestellt werden. Integriert ist auch eine Diaschau-Funktion. Wenn die
Auflösung von Bildern zu hoch ist, wird auf dem Bildschirm nur ein
Ausschnitt des ausgewählten Fotos dargestellt, die Ansicht kann aber
gezoomt oder gescrollt werden. So lässt sich z.B. bei Fotos schnell
beurteilen, ob es den gestellten Anforderungen entspricht.

Die ausgewählten Bilder lassen sich drehen, vergrössern oder verkleinern.
Bilder lassen sich auch bei Bedarf direkt in ein Textdokument "einbetten".
Der Versand kann über die Email-Funktion des Psion netBook oder der Serie
5mx/5mx PRO-Systeme erfolgen oder noch einfacher direkt aus dem
PhotoView-Menü. Die bequemste Art der Bildübernahme von der Digitalkamera
ist die per CompactFlash-Card, die in den entsprechenden Slot des
Psion-Systems gesteckt und dort als Laufwerk "D" erkannt wird.

Im PhotoView Programmpaket enhalten ist zusätzlich noch ein Linecounter,
der es ermöglicht Zeilen in Psion-Worddateien zu zählen. Damit wird die

Psion technology narrows the digital divide in
Malaysia

up to 8000 students and 1300 teachers to pilot Psion`s
netBook in local and wide area wireless configurations




4th May 2001 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Hard-copy textbooks might become
a distant memory in Malaysia if One-Ed Dot Com Sdn Bhd, a local joint
venture that has secured the Malysian Government`s approval to implement the
first phase of a nationwide eBook/eSchool project, is successful.

The project, the joint collaboration between Psion and One-Ed Dot Com is
pioneering in areas where access to the critical mass of students and teachers
is seen as a significant success factor. The joint initiative between One-Ed Dot
Com and Psion will initially cover about 4000 secondary students and 650
teachers at 50 Malaysian schools from June this year. All participants in the
pilot programme will be using the Psion netBooks powered by the Symbian
OS. Students` textbooks and their educational syllabuses will be made
available by One-Ed Dot Com in digital form. The netBook will also act as the
teachers and student`s personal gateway to the Education portal and Internet
whilst in the school or at home.

The Psion netBooks will be supplied by One-Ed Dot Com, with Ericsson as the
local technology partner. If the first phase of the project proves successful,
One-Ed Dot Com hope to replace school textbooks with "eBooks" in all
schools by 2004 making Malaysia the first country to implement digital
education nationwide for its student and teacher population of more than 5
million.

One-Ed Dot Com will be using the netBook as the core component of its
"eLearning" programme creating a new and truly mobile learning solution for
students and teachers. The netBooks will be equipped with both fixed and
wireless communication capabilities enabling the students to connect from
their homes, to roam the school and classroom wirelessly, whilst having high
speed access to the educational content and the curriculum itself.

"The first phase of the project starts in June and ends in October, involving
students from Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Wilayah

PSION trading in line with expectations

At today`s Annual General Meeting, David Levin, Chief Executive of Psion PLC,
gave the following update on current trading:

"Sales for the first quarter of the year are significantly ahead of the prior
year for the enlarged Group and the balance sheet is strong.

Trading in Psion Teklogix - now Psion`s largest operating division following
the successful acquisition and integration of Teklogix International Inc. - is
on track. While risk in North American markets has increased with cutbacks in
capital spending, Psion Teklogix has not been affected to date. Today Psion
Teklogix has announced a number of new contracts for the deployment of
wireless data solutions including implementations of its 802.11 wireless
networking technology.

As announced earlier this year, Psion`s Computers, Connect and InfoMedia
divisions have been consolidated into a single division, Psion Digital, and
its costs reduced. The majority of restructuring charges will be taken in the
first half. As anticipated in March, trading in the Psion Digital division,
particularly in palmtop markets, continues to be difficult. In the second
half of 2001, Psion Digital will launch a variety of Bluetooth-enabled
products to take advantage of the emergence of Bluetooth handsets and
peripherals.

Symbian remains an important strategic investment for Psion. During the first
quarter of 2001, Symbian shareholders contributed #20m in new equity funds,
Psion`s pro rata share being #5.6m. Symbian has delivered version 6.1 of its
platform to its licensees. However, as Psion noted in March, industry-wide
technical and funding issues have delayed the commercial implementation of
2.5G networks and services."

Nokia gives Symbian boost


Nokia gave UK start-up Symbian, a big boost on Friday when it pledged to use Symbian’s EPOC operating system in 40% of all its phones by 2004.


Symbian, backed by UK PDA maker Psion as well as Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Panasonic, has been struggling to get its OS software into products.


Since the company was established in 1998, only two commercially released mobile phones use its EPOC OS – Ericsson’s R380 and Nokia’s recently launched 9210 Communicator.


Nokia, who owns 21% of Symbian, held 30% of the handset market last year, selling some 120 million phones.


If Nokia continues to dominate the sector, and the number of mobile phone users continues to grow at its current pace, Symbian could be selling hundreds of millions of software licenses to Nokia alone.

Nokia announces two new Symbian games for the Nokia 9210 Communicator



May 16, 2001 - Nokia today announced two new games - Mobile Soccer and Golf - for the Nokia 9210 Communicator. The games are optimized for the communicator`s high-resolution color screen and the Symbian platform. Owners of the Nokia 9210 Communicator will be able to download both games from Club Nokia.

Mobile Soccer, developed by Kuju Entertainment and published by Nokia, is the second published add-on game for the Nokia 9210 Communicator. Berichten unserer amerkanischen Kollegen von PDAGeek zufolge will Psion schon im nächsten Monat einen Nachfolger des populären Revo vorstellen.



Wichtigste Neuerung soll die Integration der vielerorts geforderten Graustufen LCDs mit Hintergrundbeleuchtung sowie USB und Bluetooth mit sich bringen. Die übrigen Ausstattungsdetails (Arbeitsspeicher, Formfaktor etc.) sollen denen des Revo Plus entsprechen. Der Akku soll auf NiMH-Basis integriert worden sein und den zusätzlich benötigten Strom für die Bluetooth-Hardware aufbringen, ohne die Betriebsdauer drastisch zu senken.

Small steps to wireless networking

British companies are making inroads into delivering long-awaited Bluetooth technology. Privately-held CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) said on Tuesday its single-chip Bluetooth system had been incorporated by Compaq [US:CPQ] into the US computer company`s Evo notebook.

The wireless networking technology allows devices such as laptops to communicate wirelessly with other Bluetooth-equipped products such as mobile phones.

Psion [UK:PON], previously known for its handheld computers, has started shipping its Bluetooth PC cards to NEC.

Industry watchers have said that Bluetooth products really need to be released in pairs so that they have something compatible to talk to. There are still problems in getting Bluetooth products from different manufacturers to work together. siehe meine posting vom 25.04 : Psion Teklogix today announced that it was been awarded Wi-Fi™ certification for wireless LAN interoperability on the Teklogix 9150 Wireless Gateway.

Meanwhile Schroder Salomon Smith Barney released a report saying its technology analysts thought wireless networking - in particular local area networking within offices - could be about to enjoy meteoric growth rates akin to the mobile phone handset market`s previous growth.

They didn`t support the idea that wireless LAN technology was a threat to next generation (3G) mobile phone technology as some have asserted, because it doesn`t work over long distances. But they did conclude it could be a threat to traditional fixed-line telecoms companies as Internet telephony products were likely to be sold with wireless LANs offering free calls.

One European company making a big push into wireless LANs is Psion. The British company bought wireless networking company Teklogix last year and now says this is the key operational division of the company as its share of the palmtop market shrinks. See previous story.

The company is due to release a Bluetooth-enabled handheld computer later this year but could see itself competing with the might of Cisco [US:CSCO] Lucent [US:LU] and 3Com [US:3COM].

SSSB said differing standards in WLAN technology made it hard to pick any likely winners. But it said on the edges of the sector, chip makers such as Infineon [DE:623100] and Philips [NL:PHI] [US:PHG] would benefit if they could fight off competition from Taiwan`s chip designers.

It cited IDC figures valuing the equipment market at $3.2 billion between 2000 and 2005. It warned that although the number of systems sold could jump by more than 40 percent, prices were coming down fast.

PALM.NAS PLV.FSE haben am Donnerstag unter einer
Liquiditätswarnung der Analysten der US-Investmentbank Merrill Lynch
gelitten. Die Aktien des kalifornischen Unternehmens verloren bis 21.15
Uhr 3,45 Prozent auf 6,15 USD, während der NASDAQ Composite Index
1,40 Prozent auf 2.274,83 Zähler zulegen konnte.

Merrill Lynch hatte zuvor in einer Kundenmitteilung davor gewarnt, dass
der Technologiekonzern Ende November in Zahlungsschwierigkeiten
kommen könnte. Die Barreserven würden bis Ende Mai auf 200 bis 250
Mio. USD sinken, heißt es in der Mitteilung. Das würde noch für zirka
sechs Monate reichen.

Die Analysten der Bank seien besorgt, dass der operative Verlust im
vierten Quartal, die Abschreibungen und die hohen Kosten einen
erheblichen Teil der Barreserven des Unternehmens "auffressen"
könnten. Ein Stellenabbau könnte das Problem zwar kurzfristig lösen.
Auf der anderen Seite könnte dies dazu führen, dass Palm Probleme
habe, seinen Marktanteil bei so genannten "Mini Held"-Computern zu
behaupten.

Mitte des Monats hatte Palm wegen einer Verzögerung bei den
Auslieferungen der Minicomputer eine Gewinnwarnung herausgegeben.
Demnach werde der Verlust im vierten Quartal zwischen 170 und 190

Cable & Wireless was the second most bought on Barclays and the fifth most bought on Schwab. BT was the most bought and the most sold stock through Barclays Stockbrokers.

Baltimore Technologies [UK:BLM], which was the most bought stock by individual investors last week, continued to be heavily bought after its big fall over the past two months.

Mobitex Test Networks Open Mobile Data Market in China

May 31, 2001 – Psion Teklogix today announced that they have partnered with Ericsson in the deployment of Mobitex* test networks in China. This project extends the current business partnership between Ericsson and Psion Teklogix, moving it into a new geographic market, strategically targeted by both companies.

Ericsson Mobile Data Design AB, a division within Ericsson, is one of the world’s leading developers in the field of mobile data systems.

The test networks have been set up in Shijiazhuang, neighbouring Beijing, and in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province in South China. A third network is being planned for the fall of 2001. Each of the test networks is being tested in the 800 MHz band.

`Handelsblatt`: Opera schließt Abkommen mit Symbian-Konsortium über Browser

DÜSSELDORF (dpa-AFX) - Der norwegische Software-Entwickler Opera wird am heutigen Dienstag ein umfassendes Abkommen mit dem Symbian-Konsortium bekanntgeben, schreibt das "Handelsblatt" (Dienstagsausgabe) unter Berufung auf Verhandlungskreise. Demnach werde Opera künftig seinen Internet-Browser an alle Symbian Partner liefern. Der Browser werde zur Standardausrüstung aller Taschencomputer und internettauglichen Handys, die mit dem Epoc-Betriebssystem arbeiten, hieß es. Dies sei ein schwerer Schlag für Microsoft .

Symbian wurde von den Unternehmen Ericsson , Matsushita , Motorola , Nokia und Psion gegründet mit dem Zweck, Software-Plattformen für Mobiltelefone der nächsten Generation zu entwickeln./jh/rw/js

Microsoft wirbt vergeblich um Nokia

Mit einer Strategiewende wirbt der Softwarehersteller um Unterstützung für sein
Handy-Betriebssystem "Stinger".

Dem US-Softwarehersteller Microsoft fällt es offensichtlich schwer, ernst zu nehmende Käufer für seine
Handysoftware zu finden. "Wir würden eine tiefer gehende Partnerschaft mit Nokia begrüßen", sagte Microsoft-Chef
Steve Ballmer zu Beginn der Woche in Helsinki. Die Reaktion des Handy-Marktführers auf die Avance des
PC-Softwaremonopolisten fiel eher kühl aus: Von einem Treffen zwischen Ballmer und Nokia-Vertretern sei ihm
nichts bekannt, gab Firmensprecher Lauri Kivinen zu Protokoll. Als Software für seine Mobiltelefone wolle Nokia nach
wie vor die Produkte des Microsoft-Konkurrenten Symbian einsetzen. Zusammenarbeiten wolle man, um den
Datenaustausch zwischen Handys und Microsoft-Software - zum Beispiel auf PC - zu verbessern.

Das offene Kooperationsangebot an Nokia ist ein Indiz für die Erfolglosigkeit der bisherigen Strategie von Microsoft
im Handymarkt. Diese Strategie ist ein Teil der Dotnet-Initiative, mit der Microsoft versucht, sein
Internetsoftware-Angebot nahtlos mit Software in Geräten wie etwa Handys oder TV-Dekodern zu integrieren.

Mikrosoft erprobt "Keil-Taktik"

In der Vergangenheit hatte Microsoft versucht, einen Keil zwischen etablierte Handyhersteller und Mobilfunkanbieter
zu treiben, um sein Betriebssystem mit dem Codenamen "Stinger" an den Mann zu bringen. "Die Mobilfunkanbieter
sehen mit Sorge, dass Nokia eine sehr viel stärkere Kundenbindung aufgebaut hat als sie selbst", hatte Juha
Christensen, zuständig für Vermarktung und Vertrieb der Mobilfunksoftware bei Microsoft, in einem Interview mit
der Financial Times Deutschland im Frühjahr erläutert. "Dank Stinger können sie Telefone auf den Markt bringen,
die mit dem Mobilfunkanbieter identifiziert werden, weil sie dessen Markennamen tragen - und nicht den des
Handyherstellers."

In Deutschland hatte zum Beispiel die Telekom-Tochter T-Mobil den Test von "Stinger"-Telefonen für das zweite
Quartal angekündigt. Weder T-Mobil noch Microsoft konnten sich am Donnerstag zu der Frage äußern, ob diese
Tests bereits stattgefunden haben. Auch zur Änderung seiner Strategie im Handymarkt wollte Microsoft keine
Stellung beziehen.

Um die notwendigen Geräte in großen Mengen auf den Markt bringen zu können, hatte Microsoft Vereinbarungen mit
Auftragsherstellern wie dem britischen Unternehmen Sendo oder dem taiwanesischen Produzenten HTC, einem
langjährigen Microsoft-Partner, geschlossen. HTC stellt unter anderem die notizbuchgroßen iPaq-Minicomputer für
Compaq her, die ebenfalls mit einem Microsoft-Betriebssystem versehen sind.

Eine Frage der Kontrolle

"Die großen Handyhersteller wollen kein Betriebssystem unterstützen, das sie nicht unter Kontrolle haben", sagt
Nigel Deighton, Mobilfunkanalyst beim US-Marktforschungsunternehmen Gartner Group. Neben der Software des
führenden Kleincomputer-Anbieters Palm ist vor allem das Betriebssystem von Symbian ein starker Konkurrent zu
"Stinger". Denn in Symbian haben die großen Mobiltelefonhersteller selbst investiert: Zu den Gründungsmitgliedern
des Unternehmens gehören neben Nokia die schwedische Ericsson, der US-Konzern Motorola und der japanische
Hersteller Matsushita, der seine Telefone unter dem Markennamen Panasonic vertreibt.

Dementsprechend stark ist die Unterstützung der Hersteller für Symbian. Markführer Nokia, der alleine mehr
Handys verkauft als die beiden nächst kleineren Hersteller Motorola und Siemens zusammen, will das
Symbian-Betriebssystem Epoc künftig für alle so genannten "Smartphones" einsetzen. Diese bieten dem Nutzer
neben dem Telefonieren computerähnliche Funktionen wie das Versenden von E-Mails oder das Verwalten von
Terminen.

Selbst der deutsche Elektronikkonzern Siemens, weltweit die Nummer drei unter den Handyherstellern und
traditionell ein Partner von Microsoft, ist mittlerweile Lizenznehmer von Symbian. Siemens entwickelt allerdings
weiterhin Handys und mobilfunkfähige Kleincomputer mit dem Microsoft-Betriebssystemen.

Analysten der Bank ABN Amro haben gestern ihr Anlageurteil für die Aktien des Computerherstellers Psion von "Halten" auf "Kaufen" erhöht. Obwohl sie die Vorhersagen für Europas größten Hersteller sogenannter Handheld-Rechner nach unten korrigieren, erwarten die Wertpapierstrategen einen Wertzuwachs je Aktie von über 20% binnen eines halben Jahres. Zwar ermittelten die Analysten schlechtere Basisdaten und schwierige Bedingungen für Psions Digitalabteilung. Doch deren Position werde sich weit vor Jahresende wieder erholen. Die Wertpapierspezialisten setzten als neues Kursziel für das Psion-Papier 129 Pence fest. In den letzten Tagen schwankte der Psion-Kurs um 89 Pence.

Nachdem Palm vor wenigen Wochen mit Acer eine Vereinbarung über die Portierung des Palm-Betriebssystemes in Chinesisch bekanntgeben konnte, zeigt sich heute, dass andere Handheld-Anbieter schon weiter sind. So kündigte Psion nun gleich zwei Varianten des revo PLUS an, die bereits komplett mit Chinesich umgehen können.



Ausgeliefert werden die beiden Varianten unter der Bezeichnung "Psion 618C" und bieten auf Basis von EPOC Release 5 (kurz: "ER5") insgesamt fünf verschiedene Eingabemethoden an - "Traditional" und "Simplified". Zum Lieferumfang des rund 360 US-Dollar teuren PDAs gehört ein Chinesisch-Englisch/Englisch-Chinesisch Wörterbuch, SMS-Unterstützung für die dortigen Netze sowie die übliche Peripherie. Mit 75% Zuwächsen jährlich ist China einer der größten Wachstumsmärkte weltweit.

Symbian, Hersteller mobiler Betriebssysteme für Mobiltelefone, und Streaming-Software-Anbieter RealNetworks gaben heute eine Zusammenarbeit bekannt. Gemeinsam werde man die Entwicklung neuer mobiler Software auf Basis des Symbian OS Betriebssystems unterstützten. Als Teil dieser Zusammenarbeit wurde RealNetworks Mitglied des Symbian Technology Partner Programms. RealNetworks gab ebenfalls die Markteinführung des RealPlayer Mobile für Symbian OS bekannt.

Weltweit erste GPRS-Lösung für Psion


Dem auf mobile Anwendungen spezialisierten Softwareunternehmen Knowledge Intelligence ist ein Fortschritt in der mobilen Datenkommunikation gelungen: Die in Köln und Darmstadt ansässige Startup-Firma hat für Taschencomputer des Herstellers Psion die weltweit erste Übertragungslösung entwickelt, die auf dem neuen Mobilfunkstandard GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) basiert. Die Lösung kann als "Free-Download" gratis von der Unternehmens-Website heruntergeladen werden.

Wie KI-Vorstand Dirk Buschmann heute in Köln mitteilt, trägt die neue Lösung der Tatsache Rechnung, dass es bisher nicht möglich war, GPRS-basierte Lösungen auf bestimmten Betriebssystemen der so genannten "Palm-Tops", "Handhelds" oder "PDAs" (Personal Digital Assistent) anzuwenden. So funktioniere dieses Feature zum Beispiel nicht bei dem sehr weit verbreiteten, von Symbian entwickelten Betriebssystem EPOC32 5.0, auf dem unter anderem die komplette Psion-Produktpalette laufe. "Gerade für mobile Business-Anwendungen ist der Einsatz von GPRS von extrem hoher Bedeutung", erläutert KI-Vorstand Buschmann die Ausgangsproblematik, "denn für eine bestmögliche Prozessunterstützung und zur optimalen Ausschöpfung des Potenzials solcher mobilen Lösungen ist es erforderlich, dass eine ständige Online-Verbindung besteht. Auf Basis des bisherigen GSM-Mobilfunkstandards ist dies jedoch sehr kostenintensiv, da hier nicht nach Datenvolumen, sondern nach Verbindungsdauer abgerechnet wird. Bei GPRS hingegen zahlt der Anwender n ur für die tatsächlich übermittelten Datenpakete und nicht für die Verbindungsdauer - daher können Handys die ganze Zeit im Netz eingeloggt bleiben."

Problem mit Routing-Tabellen gelöst

Zu diesem Zweck erhalte das Handy eine weltweit gültige IP- (Internet Protocol-)Adresse, ergänzt KI-Entwicklungsvorstand Harald Puhl. Das Handy baue die Verbindung zum Endgerät (Psion) bei Bedarf selber auf und übernehme so - technisch gesehen - die Funktion der Server der Internet Provider. Und genau hier, bei der Vergabe der und dem Umgang mit den IP-Adressen, entstehe das Problem, für das KI nun eine Lösung entwickelt hat: "Beim Aufbau der Verbindung zum Psion-Gerät wird eine identische IP-Adresse vergeben. Der Psion nimmt diese Adresse zwar an, da aber die `Gegenseite` die gleiche Adresse hat, trägt das Gerät sie nicht in seine `Routing`-Tabellen ein - mit der Folge, dass keine Verbindung aufgebaut werden und keine Datenübermittlung stattfinden kann", schildert Puhl die bisherige Situation. Exakt an dieser Stelle setzt die KI-Lösung an: Mit Hilfe des eigenentwickelten Programms wird die identische IP-Adresse trotz vorheriger Ablehnung durch das Psion-Gerät in die "Routing"-Tabellen eingetragen - dies gesc hieht, indem das KI-Programm nach erfolgter Fehlermeldung gestartet wird und so die Verbindung umgehend öffnet. Zwar handele es sich hierbei nur eine Behelfslösung, räumt KI-Entwicklungsvorstand Dr. Puhl ein, jedoch erfülle sie wirksam ihren Zweck: Die GPRS-Verbindung ist mit Psion-Geräten zu realisieren. "Und wir sind schon ein bisschen stolz, dass bislang kein anderer Anbieter eine solche Lösung zur Verfügung stellen kann", so KI-Vorstand Buschmann abschließend. (as)

Psion stellt Produktion von Handheld-Geräten für Endkunden ein


Europas größter Palmcomputer-Hersteller Psion will sein Geschäft umstrukturieren. Eines der ersten Opfer werden die Handheld-Geräte für Endkunden sein. Voraussichtlich wird die Neuordnung der Digital-Sparte die rund ein Drittel zum Konzernumsatz beiträgt, 250 Arbeitsplätze kosten. Im Zuge dieser Neuausrichtung wird sich das bislang als britischer Pionier des Mobile Computing geltene Unternehmen zukünftig auf die Industrial- und Enterprise-Segmente seiner Tochtergesellschaft Psion Teklogix sowie auf ihr strategisches Investment in Symbian konzentrieren. Alle diese Aktivitäten zielen darauf ab, Kundenlösungen im Wireless-Networking-Bereich bereitzustellen - sowohl im LAN- als auch im WAN-Segment.

Die Entscheidung, Psion Digital einer massiven Restrukturierung zu unterziehen, sei massgeblich von der anhaltend enttäuschenden Geschäftsentwicklung vor dem Hintergrund schwacher und übersättigter Märkte für Handheld-Computer und Mobiltelefone bestimmt. Eine Fortsetzung dieses Trends sei auch für das nächste Jahr zu erwarten. Psion handhelds fall victim to a changing market

wrong - but other players have squeezed it out of its niche, say experts

UK handheld computer maker Psion, which announced on Wednesday it was laying off 250 staff and postponing the launch of its Bluetooth kit, has been pushed out of its niche, according to experts.

The company is restructuring its digital division, and seems to be abandoning the development of new handheld devices aimed at the consumer. It blames the changes, which will cost £29m, on a "weak and oversupplied" handheld market. It is expected to concentrate on developing wireless networking products for businesses, where the margins are higher.

For its part, Psion emphasises that it is keeping its options open, and is not entirely abandoning consumer handhelds. "We`re not doing anything of the sort," said a spokesman. "We`ll be continuing to sell our product range, and there will be more Psion consumer products in the future."

Nevertheless, its announcement amounts to a serious retrenchment from the days when Psion competed head-on with Palm, PocketPC and others.

In some ways Psion, an early pioneer in handhelds, has simply suffered from a changing market. Experts point out that the consumer handheld market has shown strong growth in recent times, but that growth has been focused on pen-based PDAs rather than Psion`s keyboard-based products.

"You could say that it`s not really Psion`s fault," said Tim Mui, research analyst at IDC. Mui, who believes that the handheld market hasn`t yet been hit by the US economic slowdown, is predicting that the sector will grow by around 50 percent during 2001. "Psion`s not done anything particularly wrong, but its niche has been attacked by other players. The growth for pen-based PDAs has been phenomenal, and will continue to grow -- while Psion has also suffered because the price of notebooks and sub-notebooks has been dropping," Mui explained.

Psion blamed the decision to stop work on a Bluetooth PDA and a range of Bluetooth connectivity kit on "the slower-than-anticipated establishment of a mass market for Bluetooth products".

Mui agrees that this excuse is genuine. "There still aren`t many Bluetooth devices out there," he agrees, explaining that Psion needed Bluetooth to go well in order to balance the decline in its sales of modems.

On the other hand, Psion is not the only handheld maker with troubles. US-based rival Palm, which has the greatest PDA market share worldwide, has also been having a difficult time. It admitted in May that sales were much lower than predicted, and that it was expecting to make a loss of between £120m and £133m in the three months to June 2001.

With both Psion and Palm in trouble, there would seem to be an opportunity for other companies to take advantage of the handheld market. "Psion`s withdrawal from the consumer handheld sector could be a bit rash. I think we`ll see several Far East companies releasing products to fill this space in the market," said Mui, who also believes that Hewlett-Packard -- maker of the Jornada range of PDAs -- and even Microsoft could benefit from Psion`s move.

London, U.K.– October 17th, 2001 – Psion Teklogix, (LSE: PON) a leading provider of mobile computing solutions for the enterprise, is to play a major role in Italy’s imminent adoption of the Euro. On January 1st, 2002, Italy will give up the Lire to join ten other European countries in adopting the Euro as its national currency.

Poste Italiane, the Italian post office, is responsible for ensuring that sufficient Euro coins are warehoused and then distributed in time to enter circulation on 1st January 2002. This mammoth logistical operation will distribute the Euro to more than 40,000 sites, including 14,000 post offices and 26,000 banks, throughout Italy.

To plan, coordinate and execute the largest currency deployment in Italian history, Poste Italiane sought the assistance of Psion Teklogix and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), the global IT solutions provider. Psion Teklogix’ world-leading wireless network logistics solution expertise and experience enabled Poste Italiane to supply and successfully roll-out Italy’s largest ever single wireless logistics solution in less than two months.

The distribution logistics solution designed by Psion Teklogix has been installed across 115 central, regional and provincial warehouses. To guarantee 100 percent up-time, the Psion Teklogix solution is designed with redundancy capabilities and allows “hot back-up”. At selected sites, Psion Teklogix installed an 802.11 wireless Local Area Network configured to work with two Psion Teklogix 9400 network controllers, 7035 hand-held terminals, 9150 access points, cordless scanners and bar-code printers. Each of the installations was integrated into a central SAP logistics management system.

“Psion Teklogix successfully met the challenge of designing and installing Italy`s largest wireless logistics solution in under two months,” said Paolo Canepari, Logistics Business Line Director, CSC Italy. “We chose Psion Teklogix because of its world leading experience and expertise in providing mission-critical WLAN enterprise solutions, especially in SAP environments."

die kostenintensive pda-entwicklung wurde gerade noch rechtzeitig aufgegeben (leider). das wird sich günstig auf die neuen geschäftszahlen auswirken!
psion teklogix wird auch vom sicherheitsboom profitieren !

aber entscheidend für den kurs wird die weite entwicklung von symbian sein.

mich würde interessieren ob und wieviel psion an den guten verkäufen des 9210 communicator verdient.

habe eigentlich auf eine übernahme von psion gehofft. :-)

nach guten zahlen und goodnews könnte psion schnell wieder
über 2 euro stehen.

Zum ersten Mal hat Nokia in Westeuropa die Führerschaft im PDA-Markt erzielt. Der Marktforscher Canalys ermittelte für das dritte Quartal 2001, dass Nokia einen Marktanteil von 28,3 Prozent belegte, gefolgt von Palm mit 20,2 Prozent und Compaq mit 12,4 Prozent. Dabei profitierte Nokia von der guten Akzeptanz des »9210 Communicator«-Smartphones, das sowohl Geschäfts-, als auch Privatkunden anspricht.

Nokia hofft auf Umsatz in der
Schnappschuss-Branche

Die neueste Kreation aus Finnland ist eine Kreuzung aus Handy und
Kamera. Sie soll Mobilfunk-Anbietern lange vor dem Start der
UMTS-Netze neue Einnahmequellen durch bunte Bildchen
erschließen.

Der anhaltende Erfolg der SMS-Kurznachrichten in Mobilfunknetzen hat den
finnischenen Hersteller Nokia zu einem neuen Telefon inspiriert, das
Schnappschüsse aufnehmen und ins Internet oder an andere Telefone
ähnlicher Bauart verschicken kann. Zusammen mit einer von sechs anderen
Neuentwicklungen - darunter einem Handy für Sportler mit eingebauter
Stoppuhr und eine drahtlose Freisprecheinrichtung - wurde das Knipshandy
mit der Typenbezeichnung 7650 gestern in Barcelona vorgestellt. Es soll im
ersten Halbjahr 2002 in den Handel kommen und nach Nokias Vorstellungen
für etwa 550 Euro verkauft werden.

Aus SMS wird MMS

Nokia bemüht sich mit seinem neuen Modell um
die europäischen Mobilfunkanbieter, die nach
neuen Einnahmequellen fahnden, um die hohen
Investitionen in UMTS-Technik und entsprechende
Lizenzen zu rechtfertigen. Mit der
Weiterentwicklung der SMS zur "Multimedia
Message" (MMS), also zur Nachricht mit
angehängtem Bild- oder Tonschnipsel, könne
Nokia einen ganz neuen Markt eröffnen,
schwärmte Chef Norma Ollila bei der Vorstellung
des neuen Telefons. Das Verschicken von Bildern statt Texten sei für die
Nutzer eine ganz natürliche Erweiterung der Handynutzung, prophezeit er.
Und: In den kommenden sechs bis zwölf Monaten werde der Mobilfunk
deswegen einen Paradigmenwechsel durchmachen. Ollila ist Chef des
weltweit erfolgreichsten Herstellers von Funktelefonen, aber in Momenten wie
diesen erweckt der Finne den Anschein, als trage er die ganze Branche auf
seinem leicht gebeugten Schultern.

Ein wenig scheint es tatsächlich so, dass sich die Mobilfunkbranche in Europa
im Takt von Nokia bewegt, während Hersteller wie Siemens, Motorola und
Ericsson hauptsächlich damit zu tun haben, die Sparmaßnahmen zur
Anpassung an den schrumpfenden Handymarkt umzusetzen. Für die Idee von
MMS (und die dafür notwendigen Infrastruktur von Nokia) wirbt das finnische
Unternehmen seit Februar, die Kamera-Handys der Konkurrenten Panasonic
und NEC waren schon im Sommer ein Verkaufschlager in Japan.

Aber erst jetzt, da auch Nokia verspricht, das Handy zur Idee zu liefern,
finden sich prominente Anhänger. Um seinen Rückhalt unter den
Mobilfunkanbietern zu demonstrieren, spielte Ollila Videoaufzeichnungen von
Telekom-Chef Ron Sommer und Managern der Konkurrenten Vodafone,
Telefonica Moviles und Orange ein. Obwohl alle mit der Technik
experimentieren, hat keines dieser Unternehmen bis jetzt ein MMS-Angebot
angekündigt.

Kein Grübeln über Gebühren

Lukrativ könnte MMS auch deswegen werden, weil die Mobilfunkfirmen sich
nicht den Kopf darüber zerbrechen müssen, für welche Inhalte ihre Kunden
Geld zahlen würden. Anssi Vanjoki, Chef der Handysparte, wies bei der
Vorstellung des neuen Modells darauf hin, dass die Kamera jeden
Handynutzer auch zu einem Anbieter von Inhalten für seine Freunde und
Bekannten macht, der Netzbetreiber macht seinen Umsatz durch die
Übermittlung.

Gleichwohl sieht Nokia auch Raum für traditionelle Medien und
Internet-Anbieter; am Freitag hatte das Unternehmen Vereinbarungen über
MMS-Angebote mit der Website des Sportsenders Eurosport und dem
Internetportal Lycos Europe bekannt gegeben.

Nach Vorstellung von Nokia sollen auch die Nutzer herkömmlicher Handys
oder E-Mail-Empfänger auf MMS zugreifen können - sie erhalten eine normale
SMS mit einer Internet-Adresse, die den Zugriff auf Botschaft und Bild mit
Hilfe eines normalen PC ermöglicht

STOCKWATCH Psion advances as HSBC raises stance

Shares in Psion PLC were advancing in early deals after HSBC upgraded its stance on the wireless communications developer in reaction to its recent fundraising for its Symbian venture, dealers said.

HSBC moved its stance to `buy` from a former `reduce` after last month`s announcement that the Symbian mobile software consortium secured £20.75 million in funding from stakeholders on a pro-rata basis.

The broker had been concerned that, out of Symbian`s shareholders, only Nokia was being vocally supportive of Symbian. This had been a key factor in HSBC`s adoption of a `reduce` stance last September.

Some of these concerns about Symbian have since been alleviated, the broker said in a morning note to clients.

Nokia announced a new Symbian smartphone in November, the Nokia 7650, and said it was making the handset`s software available to other vendors.

Matsushita - another Symbian shareholder - has announced that it is trialling the software, which HSBC saw as negating the Japanese electronics giant`s unenthusiastic comments about Symbian a few months earlier.

But uncertainties over the politics of the mobile operating system environment mean HSBC sees it impossible to determine Symbian`s long-term profit prospects.

Psion`s shares therefore tend to move in line with Symbian newsflow and sector sentiment rather than around a fundamental valuation, the broker believes.

This means the upcoming industry events - the 3GSM Congress, CEBIT and Symbian`s Developer Expo - may lead to a series of positive newsflow from Symbian and its licensees, which should give the shares a sustained boost, the broker advised.

And while the broker has not completely shaken off concerns that Symbian may never be allowed to make huge profits, HSBC sees little point dwelling on these if we are about to see a wave of positive noise about Symbian from the mobile industry.

The story is getting better rather than worse, and the shares could well breach 100 pence again in the coming months, it advised.

At 9.33 am, shares in Psion were up 1/2 pence to 77.
