NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters) - Biotechnology firm Calypte Biomedical Corp. (NASDAQ SC:CALY) said on Wednesday it believes its second-quarter revenues are on track to beat any previous quarter, and it has received U.S. regulatory approval for a urine test for AIDS.

The company also said it has enough cash to fund operations through the second quarter and it continues to pursue additional funding. The company had said on April 12 it would not have enough financing to sustain operations through the second quarter.

The urine test, called the HIV-1 Urine Western Blot, was given premarket approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is intended for use as a supplemental, more specific test of urine samples that have been found to be reactive for antibodies to HIV-1 using another screening procedure made by Calypte, the company said.

Calypye shares rose 25 cents, or 71.43 percent, to 60 cents on the Nasdaq, off a 52-week high of $5.125.

UNITED NATIONS - The secretary general of the United Nations says he`s optimistic that the world is now ready to take on the battle against HIV and AIDS.

Kofi Annan made the comments Wednesday at a news conference on the final day of a special meeting of the General Assembly.
It`s the first time the UN has ever held a special session to deal with a public health disaster such as AIDS.

It took months of debate and delicate compromise, but at the end member states finally agreed to a UN declaration. It sets out a plan with target dates to treat those affected by the disease and curb its spread.

Annan was pleased with the outcome of the session. "All in all I feel even more confident today than I felt three days ago that we can defeat this deadly disease."

The 16-page UN declaration outlines ways to protect the rights of those with the disease, methods of treatment, prevention and control. It also sets target dates to reduce the spread of the disease among specific populations and to curb mother-to-child transmission.

It emphasizes the important role women, especially in Africa, must be allowed to take on to combat the disease.

But Annan acknowledged that the deal was not easy to craft and that the negotiations over specific language were highly contentious.

"In the last two days some painful differences have been brought into the open. But that is the best place for them. Like AIDS itself, these differences need to be confronted head on, not swept under the carpet," he said.

The painful things included specific language that referred to vulnerable groups such as sex trade workers and men who have sex with men.

Some countries objected to including such language in a UN document.

Egypt was among the mainly Islamic countries that objected.

"They were referring to language, not fighting HIV and AIDS, but trying to introduce language that would promote homosexuality as something that is normal. It is not normal, it`s abnormal. I accept it, but as an abnormality," said Ahmed Aboulgheit, Egypt`s ambassador to the United Nations.

Eventually, the language was watered down to secure the agreement.

But in the end, changing a few words in the declaration doesn`t really matter, according to Stephen Lewis.

The former Canadian UN ambassador is now the secretary general`s special envoy for AIDS in Africa.

"Africa is like a model. If we fail in Africa, if people start talking about a catastrophe, an apocalypse, if we lose it in Africa it`s not going to work elsewhere in the world. (We) have to see it as a way to stop the pandemic, and roll it back, and save lives," said Lewis.

But Lewis says the world can`t just concentrate on Africa, it needs to also look at HIV and AIDS in places such as Asia, China and Eastern Europe.

Without preventative action, the problem in those regions could take on even greater proportions in the years to come.

Former president Bill Clinton raised the stakes on the eve of the momentous three-day special session of the UN on HIV/Aids by calling on the US to put in far more money than it has promised so far to fight the epidemic.
Today Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, who has made the war on Aids his "personal priority", will formally ask for contributions to a global health fund. He says that up to $10bn (£7bn) a year is needed. So far the US - the richest donorstate- has pledged just $200m, and the UK about $100m (£70m).

But Mr Clinton said the US had to pay its full share, which he estimated at 22% of the total, or more than $2bn a year. Writing in the Washington Post, he said: "To shirk this responsibility is to abdicate America`s timeless role as a beacon of hope and promise. Moreover, we can afford to devote these resources. With adequate funding and strong leadership, we can attack this disease comprehensively."

The hopes and lives of most of the 36m people in the world living with HIV rest with the New York session, the first ever devoted to a health issue. Aids has killed 22m people already in the 20 years since it was first detected. It is now recognised as a critical development issue, since the burden of the disease, which is wiping out the younger, most economically productive generation, is wrecking the fragile economies of poor countries.

While sub-Saharan Africa is most visibly suffering, there is growing anxiety in Asia. Although the prevalence rate in India sounds low at just 0.7%, its huge population translates that into 3.7m people with HIV/Aids: more than any other country except South Africa. Much of the spread is through heterosexual sex, just as in Africa, although drug abuse is also an important factor.

"In Cambodia and Myanmar [Burma], infection rates are becoming quite serious," Robert Hecht, associate director of UNAids said. "Two to three per cent of the adult population is becoming infected."

There is also serious concern about parts of the former Soviet Union, such as Ukraine, where the infection rates in intravenous drug users are soaring. "Aids is still not necessarily seen as an issue that goes beyond the health minister in some of the former republics," Mr Hecht said.

One of the purposes is to encourage national leaders to see HIV/Aids as a critical social and economic problem, and mobilise accordingly. There are two dozen heads of state or government among the 3,000 diplomats, health officials and campaigning groups taking part. The session is intended to end on Wednesday with a declaration of commitment to a huge new effort against HIV/Aids, but there are inevitably differences of opinion on what it should include.

One of the biggest disagreements is on whether efforts should be directed towards the prevention of new infections or the provision of medicines to poor countries. Campaigning groups at the grassroots, together with the high-profile organisations Oxfam and Médecins sans Frontières, want a substantial proportion of the global health fund spent on drugs.

But there are other disputes too. Some countries are strongly opposed to the proposed statement in the declaration that special efforts must be made to help "men who have sex with men; sex workers; injecting drug users and their sexual partners". US gay and human rights groups will not want the references dropped.

In addition, promoting the use of condoms is an issue for Roman Catholic countries.

UNITED NATIONS, June 25 -- U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan opened the General Assembly`s Special Session on HIV/AIDS by urging world leaders to find the will, and the money, to fight what he called the "nightmare" of AIDS.

The three-day meeting is the first the 189-nation body has ever devoted to a health issue, an indication, Annan said, the world had started to "wake up" to the pandemic. As part of that awakening, he called for spending on the battle against AIDS in developing countries "to rise to roughly five times its present level" of about $1.8 billion a year.

But the unprecedented gathering quickly became mired in testy, public dispute over Islamic country objections to participation of an international gay and lesbian organization in some of the meetings.

Unable to agree in informal talks that preceded today`s opening ceremonies, negotiators had referred the matter to the General Assembly, which was forced to interrupt its plenary session for three hours of debate. The result was a vote, boycotted by the Islamic nations, to allow the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission to take part.

In a separate development, United States and Brazil announced in Washington that they had decided on bilateral negotiations to resolve a dispute involving Brazil`s potential manufacture of patented AIDS drugs. The U.S. Trade Representative`s Office said that the United States had withdrawn a complaint it lodged against Brazil last year at the World Trade Organization, deciding it was "not the most constructive way to settle our differences."

Annan began by reciting the grim statistics on AIDS, known by heart by most of the 3,000 delegates here from governments, nongovernmental, business and activist organizations. "It has killed almost 22 million people. It has left 13 million children orphaned," Annan said. "Today, more than 36 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS."

U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, heading a 50-member U.S. delegation along with Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson, said the world was facing "a time of plague" similar to the Black Plague that killed millions in the 15th century. But, he said, "this is not the Middle Ages -- back then people did not know what caused the pestilence and how it spread. We of the 21st century know better. We know that a virus causes AIDS, and we know how to prevent its spread."

Although the Bush administration believed that "prevention, prevention and more prevention" was the best way to stop the disease, it supports an "integrated approach" that also includes treatment for those already infected, Powell said. A $200 million contribution to a special U.N. global fund against AIDS announced by President Bush last month was "seed money," and "more will come," he said.

Annan has proposed the fund as part of global expenditures he said must reach $7 billion to $10 billion a year for comprehensive prevention and treatment programs.

The soaring speeches by presidents, prime ministers and other senior government officials was interrupted by the dispute over the gay and lesbian group, one of a number of organizations selected by the U.N. Secretariat to participate with government representatives at round-table sessions on AIDS issues.

When the list of organizations was circulated at the end of last week, 11 governments that are members of the 55-member Organization of the Islamic Conference objected. The Islamic governments -- led in debate today by Egypt, Pakistan and Malaysia -- insisted that neither the session`s final declaration, due out Wednesday, nor the round-table meetings give official recognition to groups whose activities are illegal and culturally unacceptable in their countries.

A number of Western governments felt equally strongly that refusing to include groups that are at particular risk -- and have been in the forefront of urging action such as this week`s special session -- would perpetuate the stigma and discrimination that contributes to the spread of the disease.

An Egyptian motion to let the blackball stand was defeated, 63 to 46, with 19 abstentions. The Western motion to allow the group to participate in tomorrow`s round table on AIDS and human rights passed 62 to 0, with 30 abstentions and the Islamic countries refusing to vote. The United States voted with the majority in both cases.

Meanwhile, word quickly spread at the assembly of the withdrawal of the U.S. complaint against Brazil in Geneva. Brazil is one of the few developing countries in the world to provide universal treatment for AIDS victims with sophisticated anti-retroviral drugs, some of which are not under patent there and are produced by its generic drug industry. As a result, AIDS deaths have been halved over the last four years.

But the United States, strongly backed by the pharmaceutical industry, had protested a 1996 Brazilian law requiring foreign companies to locally manufacture anything they sell in Brazil within three years of starting sales there, or risk domestic competition regardless of patent status.

In a joint statement this morning, Brazil and the United States said they had reached a "mutually satisfactory solution" under which Brazil would consult before taking any action under the law, and the matter overall would be made part of a recently agreed forum for bilateral trade talks, with an initial meeting to be held July 20.

Nachtrag zu Montagnier / Calypte

Am 6./7. Mai (2000) trafen sich in Pretoria 32 Wissenschaftler und Ärzte, .....Die Kommissionsmehrheit bildeten u.a. Vertreter des südafrikanischen Medical Research Council (MRC), des AIDS-Programms der UNO (UNAIDS) [13] und der US-Bundesbehörde Centers for Disease Control (CDC) [14] sowie Luc Montagnier, der als der eigentliche HIV-Entdecker gilt [15] - während sein Konkurrent Robert Gallo zwar eingeladen war, aber nicht erschien.

.......Montagniers Sitz im wissenschaftlichen Beirat von Calypte ist ein Beispiel für seine Interessenlage. Calypte will mit Urintests, die HIV nachweisen sollen, ganz Südafrika überziehen.

Ich wollte es hier mal reinstellen als Untermauerung!
Ich stellte mal folgende These auf.
Wer den HIV Virus erkennt wird evtl. auch ein Heilmittel erarbeiten

Was denken sich denn einige Leute hier im Board
Was macht eine Firma so den ganzen Tag mit Laboringenieuren und Professoren. (65 Angestellte)
Schach über die Leine spielen ?

NEIN Sie werden natürlich auch forschen.
Sollte CALY ein Heilmittel in Arbeit haben, dann sind diese Diskusionen bei Kursen von 0,60$ lächerlich.

Dann sollte man in Richtung 50$ diskutieren.

Keine Firma, KEINE Firma auf der ganzen Welt ist wirklich daran interessiert ein HEILMITTEL zu finden. Geschweige denn einen Impfstoff!

KOHLE wird doch nur verdient, wenn der kranke Mensch so lange wie möglich am Leben erhalten wird, und so viel Medikamente in sich reinpumpt wie möglich!
