Transgenomic Technology Proving to be Useful Tool in Fight Against Terrorism
Company Applies the Speed, Sensitivity and Versatility of Its WAVE(R) Analysis System to Crime Victim Identification, Development of Defenses Against Bioterrorism
OMAHA, Neb., and SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Transgenomic, Inc. (Nasdaq: TBIO - news) today announced that its WAVE system has been proposed as a solution for the identification of victims of the recent terrorist attacks, based on the results of a study conducted by the University of Denver. Transgenomic also announced that its technology is being used by leading defense contractors to develop protocols for the rapid detection of biological agents that may be used in an attack by terrorists.

Based on the successful application of WAVE technology for the identification of agents likely to be used in a bioterrorist attack, multiple unit placements of the WAVE DNA analyzer have been made at leading U.S. defense contractors. Anthrax, smallpox and other pathogens are suspected to be among the biologic agents most likely to be used in a bioterrorist attack. The WAVE system is positioned to be the screening tool of choice because of its ability to rapidly and accurately perform these assays. It can then be used to specifically identify the strain of a biological agent found including its susceptibility, or resistance, to antimicrobial therapies.

As Transgenomic, its customers and collaborators adapt the WAVE technology to deal with future bioterrorism issues, research at the University of Denver positions the WAVE to be of immediate use in dealing with the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks. In a press release issued earlier this month ( http://www.du.edu/news/release/sDNA.html ), the University described a pilot study on crime scene identification of human remains, conducted in collaboration with the Denver Police Department. In the study, biology assistant professor Phil Danielson, Ph.D., used a system on loan from Transgenomic to demonstrate the use of the WAVE to compare DNA among family members, allowing identification of crime victims.

Both the Department of Justice and the National Institute of Justice in Washington, D.C. have responded with interest to a proposal submitted by Danielson to use this method to identify the victims of the recent terrorist attacks. In explaining the reason for the federal government`s interest, Danielson noted, ``The method we`ve developed based on Transgenomic`s WAVE technology improves on the FBI`s current method in several aspects, including requiring a smaller DNA sample and producing accurate results that are both much faster and much less expensive.``

Application of Transgenomic`s technology in victim identification and bioterrorism is a natural extension of ongoing research into the rapid detection and identification of microorganisms. In 2000, Transgenomic initiated a series of research and development collaborations to develop applications which broadly apply the WAVE for testing of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. The company also created a research and development consortium for detection, screening and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance traits in key pathogenic bacteria.

``In this time of unprecedented challenges to humankind we are hopeful that our technology can be applied to improve the quality of life, be it tackling diseases, defending against terrorism, or giving victims` families closure. We want those affected by the recent tragic events to know our thoughts are with them and we are committed to bring the Transgenomic team`s talents to bear to protect against future threats from terrorism,`` said Collin D`Silva, Transgenomic`s CEO.

      About Transgenomic

Transgenomic provides versatile and innovative research tools and related consumable products to the life sciences industry. Its WAVE® Nucleic Acid Fragment Analysis System can be used for genetic variation detection, size-based double-strand DNA separation and analysis, single-strand DNA separation and analysis and DNA purification. When used for variation detection, these tools enable researchers to discover and understand variation in the human genetic code, or genome, in order to accelerate and improve drug development and diagnostics. The WAVE System has become a leading tool to analyze genetic variations as it allows researchers to analyze both known and unknown genetic variations faster, with more accuracy and at a lower cost than other commercially-available techniques. To date, there are over 600 WAVE Systems placed in over 25 countries around the world.

Transgenomic`s specialty chemical products consist of a wide variety of nucleic acid-based products and services for the life sciences sector, including DNA building blocks (``phosphoramidites``), fluorescent markers and dyes and associated reagents.

The company is a principle provider of oligomimetics. Oligomimetics are chemically modified DNA and RNA molecules exhibiting proven enhancements in stability, bioavailability, specificity and efficacy making them excellent candidates for use in clinical applications such as genetic diagnostics and therapeutics. Oligomimetics also exhibit higher affinity and specificity than regular DNA making them excellent candidates for DNA diagnostics and chip technology.
