SGI Technology Helps Lockheed Martin Secure $200 Billion Joint Strike Fighter ContractVirtual Reality Technology Significantly Reduces Risks and Costs, Increases Performance
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct 26, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- SGI (NYSE: SGI)
today announced that its visualization technology provided modeling and
simulation breakthroughs during the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program`s concept
demonstration phase, allowing Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) to reduce
program risk and costs. The Pentagon today awarded Lockheed Martin a JSF
contract potentially worth $200 billion, the largest military contract ever
awarded.
Affordability is the focus of the JSF program. To help reduce costs, Lockheed
Martin turned to SGI for its advanced visualization technology to find the best
ways to design, build and maintain the JSF. SGI(TM) visualization systems
allowed Lockheed Martin to design the JSF virtually, long before metal was bent
for demonstration aircraft.
"We focused on eight key high-payoff initiatives, which include a combination of
process change, hardware and software," said Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co.`s
Mary Ann Horter, program director for its Virtual Product Development
Initiative. "In some areas we saw reductions in cycle time and cost savings in
excess of 70 percent to 80 percent. Virtual simulations have been key components
in helping us meet these targets."
"SGI is proud of the role it has played in helping Lockheed Martin to create the
most combat-capable, efficient and lethal family of multirole strike fighters in
the history of military aviation," said Bob Bishop, chairman and CEO, SGI. "The
pilots who will fly this low-cost, next-generation fighter aircraft will benefit
from its superior performance."
Lockheed Martin will build about 3,000 JSF aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Navy
and Marine Corps and the United Kingdom`s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. The
stealthy JSF is a next-generation multirole strike fighter that will replace the
U.S. military`s aging fleet of F-16, A-10, F/A-18 C/D and AV-8B aircraft.
