Smart cards simplify purchases
Tech company`s application speeds up transactions
By Jon Sidener / Gannett News Service
http://detnews.com/2001/technews/0105/14/b01-223946.htm
A Chandler, Ariz., technology company wants to help you cut in line at the movies.
Amatech USA has developed an application for its smart-card technology that would let moviegoers bypass the box office line. Instead, they would buy tickets over the Internet and download that information to a smart card, called a Wave Pass. At the theater, a smart-card reader would "deduct" the ticket from the Wave Pass` memory and admit the individual or group to the movie.
Smart cards resemble credit cards, but they contain a computer chip and memory that can be programmed to handle different transactions, such as the purchase of movie tickets.
Amatech, the U.S. subsidiary of a German corporation, hopes that the movie theater application will serve as a foot in the door for its smart cards in this country. Smart cards are popular in Europe, where they are used for a variety of applications, such as managing public transit payments.
Amatech USA (www. amatech.de/english.htm) said it would work with the service MovieTicket.com (www.movieticket.com) as well as National Amusements, an East Coast theater chain, to test the system this summer. Amatech and National Amusements also plan to test smart-card sales of popcorn and other concession items.
"It`s making the Internet more real for people," said Dennis Ryan, Amatech USA`s president. "You can buy the tickets and concessions online and drop your 11-year-old son at the movies with everything on his card."
The technology, called a proximity card, is similar to the Speedpass system Mobil has promoted for several years as a quick way to pay for gasoline. Like the Speedpass keychain fob that is waved at the gas pump, the Wave Pass cards are waved at a reader device at the theater turnstile.
But the Wave Pass is more versatile than the gas pump application, which comes preloaded for the single purpose. Using card readers connected to home computers, the Wave Pass can be programmed to work with as many as 16 different applications and store 16 kilobytes -- roughly eight typed pages -- of information.

Boston Theater To Put Tickets On A Smart Card
Boston moviegoers soon will be able to download movie tickets from a Web site onto a smart card and enter a theater by waving the chip card past a card-reading device. The Boston pilot, expected to begin this spring, will test a new smart card called WavePass from Chandler, AZ-based AmaTech USA Inc., a subsidiary of German contactless smart card vendor AmaTech AG. The test will take place at a theater owned by Dedham, MA-based National Amusements, which owns 1,390 movie screens in the United States, United Kingdom and Latin America. AmaTech hopes to roll out WavePass in the fall, says Alicia Espericueta, marketing manager. She says a consumer will receive a kit with a non-contact smart card that communicates with a reader via radio frequency, a card reader for their personal computer and related software. The package will cost under $30. Espericueta says some entertainment venues may provide the kit free to consumers, while others charge for the card and device. Besides downloading tickets that they charge to a credit card account, consumers also will be able to download electronic cash onto the smart card for use at concession stands. Espericueta says similar smart card-based ticketing programs failed because consumers who put electronic tickets on their cards still had to stand online at the theater to gain admission. "Here they have the instant gratification of seeing the ticket on the smart card and knowing they don’t have to stand online again at the box office," she says .

@Speku :
Danach wieder positionen aufgebaut
Jetzt : Rechnerischer D-Kurs : 2,24 €
Also wieder im Minus

Morgen zusammen !!!!
Der Kurs von Amatech fällt
von Tag zu Tag ein bissele
und die machen bis 6.Januar
Betriebsurlaub.Die müßen sich
Ihrer Sache ja mächtig sicher sein.
In den letzten Wochen hat man uns
ja mit News nicht gerade verwöhnt
obwohl sich in diesem Sektor zur Zeit
mächtig was bewegen tut.

So ich habe mich vor-

So lange wie die Urlaub machen
brauche ich die Dinger nicht.
