Tomra Systems
Norway
Business Description
Tomra Systems (Tomra) is a manufacturer and operator of automated systems for recovery and recycling of beverage containers. The company sells, leases and services reverse vending machines. Tomra is also involved in materials handling--the pick-up of containers, sorting, crushing, cleaning, bailing, and marketing of the materials to recyclers. The company operates in over 30 countries and is involved in the recycling of approximately 2% of the total global volume of used beverage containers each year.
Industry Position
Tomra operates in the environmental control industry. Within an industry that has traditionally dealt with waste disposal and environmental clean up activities, Tomra`s strategies and operations are a refreshing change. Companies involved in the collection and recycling of materials contribute to reducing the need for virgin materials in production processes.
The EU Packaging and Waste Directive, implemented during 1996/1997 in Europe, has been extremely influential in the development of this industry sector and focuses on beverage packaging due to its high share of total waste. This industry is likely to see increased growth as governing bodies such as the California State Government and the Norwegian Government continue to pass beneficial legislation for the handling of deposit beverage containers. Thus, the need for reverse vending machines and other systems that facilitate recycling continues to grow.
Sustainability Strategies and Issues
Tomra pioneered reverse vending machines for beverage containers in 1972 and is evolving into a total-system supplier to beverage and retail industries worldwide for handling post-consumer packaging. Tomra states that its mission is "Helping the World Recycle." The company has a vision of being "the world`s number one provider of solutions that make it attractive for people to return packaging for reuse and recycling." Tomra provides the infrastructure to facilitate recycling, and, by closing the materials cycle, Tomra contributes to improved eco-efficiency in the beverage industry.
Tomra states it is of strategic importance to the organization to achieve eco-efficiency in its materials handling and collection operations as well as in its own product range. The company recognizes its responsibility for the environmental impacts generated through its operations. To track and control this impact, Tomra operates a formal environmental management system certified to ISO 14001 standards. Using a holistic approach, Tomra focuses its energy on continuous improvement in areas with the greatest potential for improvement. While all efforts to improve environmental performance are worthwhile, we would suggest Tomra could make an even greater difference by focusing on areas with the greatest environmental impact.
Scoring Analysis
Product. Recent Nordic research examining Life Cycle Analyses (LCAs) on various beverage containers concluded that materials recovery (recycling) is the most eco-efficient solution to displace the use of virgin material in manufacturing new beverage containers. In fact, Tomra reports that making aluminum cans from scrap cans saves 95% of the energy used in their production from raw materials. These findings have strengthened Tomra`s commitment to help the world recycle and reduce environmental degradation through the use of reverse vending machines and other recycling systems. The company has also initiated a LCA of different container collection models to improve the design of future systems. Tomra has a Design for Environment program and has developed a resource for engineers and project managers called the "Greenbook." This book is designed to assist in the development of projects and equipment with environmental considerations. Tomra educates its suppliers on the importance of environmental responsibility. The company has developed comprehensive purchasing guidelines (including a restricted materials list) that state environmental requirements are evaluated equally with performance under the term `total quality.` The company also has guidelines for packaging materials which focus on reusing and reducing packaging, as well as requiring that all packaging be based primarily on recycled and recyclable material. Tomra continually works to reduce the impacts of transportation. LCA studies, however, have revealed that transportation during product assembly and distribution is very small compared to energy consumption during reverse vending machine operation. As a result, Tomra`s focus in designing new equipment is to reduce energy consumption of its machines. For maintenance and pick up of collected materials, the company utilizes a web based system that is linked to individual machines. Machines automatically report their status via the internet, thus allowing Tomra to efficiently plan pick up and maintenance services. The company takes responsibility for its machines and accessories when they are removed from service. All equipment components are recycled where possible and Tomra actively seeks to influence authorities to establish recycling systems in markets where they do not yet exist. At this point, no data is available on the improvements in energy efficiency of the company`s machines. Investments. Tomra`s research and development focuses on designing new reverse vending machines and recycling systems that meet market needs while reducing their environmental impact. In terms of mergers and acquisitions, Tomra has maintained its focus on facilitating recycling in the beverage industry. The company acquired Carco in 1997 and Mobile Recycling Inc and the west coast operations of Reynolds Recycling in 1998. As part of Tomra`s strategy to take an active part in the process of engineering a closed loop technology for PET plastic containers, the company made a $5 million USD investment in UltrePET LLC. Combining Tomra`s PET supply stream with UltraPET`s operations will help Tomra reach its goal of creating a "bottle to bottle" operation. Leadership. Tomra`s business is based on providing an easy and convenient way for consumers to `close the loop` and return their beverage containers so that the materials may be reused for future beverage containers. This company clearly sees the need for reducing materials use and environmental degradation and has developed a strategy to make a profit while facilitating recycling. Erik Thorsen, CEO, and the top management team at Tomra are involved in environmental strategy discussions and participate in the annual reviews of environmental initiatives. This team formulated the company`s environmental policy and initiated the environmental programs that are currently in place. In terms of political activities, Tomra believes a commercial enterprise should not attempt to lead or influence policy makers and states it does not lobby or engage in other such activities. The company does, however, state that it encourages the establishment of recycling systems for materials and markets where no such systems exist. Tomra also communicates with governmental and other bodies, providing information on systems and possible solutions. Public messages promoting recycling are a key part of Tomra`s business. The company works to increase consumer participation in its recycling programs, effectively educating the public about environmental concerns as a good reason to recycle. Communication with the public occurs primarily through in store promotions and community based marketing. Environmental Management. Tomra`s environmental policy is solid with well-defined goals; however, the company states no sustainability objectives. Efforts are currently underway to include the triple bottom line concept into the company`s policy. The policy places responsibility for implementation on managers at all levels and has a number of employees dedicated to environmental management. Tomra`s 1998 environmental report set forth environmental education for designated managers and employees as one of its goals for 1999. The company received ISO 14001 certification in late 1999 and performs periodic evaluations and audits of company operations. During 1998 eight audits, including one external audit, were performed. Tomra publishes an environmental report as part of its annual report but could provide more detailed information including year to year comparisons and company wide statistics. Liabilities. Tomra is not responsible for any spills, toxic releases or superfund sites. The company reports no environmental liabilities. Factory/Facility Level Improvements. Tomra reports that pollution prevention programs exist at the factory level; however, details on these programs are not available. Company representatives state that all Tomra units are responsible for preventing pollution and increasing eco-efficiency. The company has begun to track and report resource usage in its headquarter facilities and we would like to see this extended to a company-wide program. In these same facilities Tomra separates twelve different types of material for recycling. The building utilizes heat-pump technology and has automatic lighting controls to reduce energy consumption. General. Tomra has developed a system whereby customers can donate the proceeds from the bottle returns to local charities. This program is in place in Finland, Sweden and Denmark and there are plans for expansion.

Pfand auf Einweg-Verpackungen - Entscheidung über Sicherheitsstandard am 24. Januar 2003

Kartellamt will Dosenpfand-Regelung genau beobachten
Donnerstag 23. Januar 2003, 15:06 Uhr
Bonn, 23.

Thursday February 13, 03:52 PM
TOMRA - HIGHLIGHTS FOURTH QUARTER 2002
- Revenues from continuing operations 651 MNOK (-7% related to
fourth quarter 2001)
- Europe 222 MNOK (-22%)
- North America 308 MNOK (0%)
- South America 121 MNOK (+15%)
- Adjusted for currency impact, revenue increased by 5% relative to
the fourth quarter 2001 (continuing operations)
- Operating profit 82 MNOK compared to a loss of 330 MNOK in the
fourth quarter 2001
- Strong cash flow, contributing to a year-end cash balance in excess
of 1 billion NOK.
Germany
On 1 January 2003, Germany introduced deposit on 14 billion
non-refillable containers for soft drink, beer and mineral water.
This is in addition to the existing deposit system for 31 billion
refillable containers. An interim, chain- or store-based solution for
non-refillable containers, based on manual handling in stores, is
currently operating. This interim solution will be replaced on 1
October 2003 by a national and automated system. TOMRA will use its
extensive technological resources to assist the industry in
developing the required solutions for Germany. Given the chosen
solution incorporating automated collection, compaction and other
items, TOMRA has not changed its expectation of the total market
potential in Germany in a medium term perspective.
Finland
Several new store openings, which have a private deposit system on
non-refillable PET containers, have been the main driver of the
positive development in Finland over the past six months. The
positive development generated by such store openings is not expected
to continue in 2003.
Israel
TOMRA received an initial order for fifty machines for the Israeli
market , half of which were delivered in December 2002. The remaining
number of machines were delivered in January 2003. The distributor
agreement, of November 2002 with Afcon Control & Automation Ltd.,
positions TOMRA for placement of a further potential of 450 machines
in 2003.
U.S. West
Operations in California were profitable during the fourth quarter
2002. Based on interest from several major retailers, TOMRA is
prepared to expand its recycling center serices in California.
However, TOMRA will delay any investment decisions until a final
resolution of legislative amendments related to man-hour reduction
and payment structure from the state is concluded, which is expected
by mid-2003.
U.S. East
TOMRA continued large scale roll-out of TOMRA 83 HcP in Michigan in
fourth quarter. For the year, TOMRA has installed 1,900 machines in
U.S. East and Canada. TOMRA expects to install approximately 2,200
machines in this area in 2003.
Brazil
Focus during the fourth quarter 2002 has been to optimize operations
at the recently acquired IMCO collection centers. In addition, TOMRA
has focused on adapting its non-deposit model to recently approved
legislation in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Under the newly passed
law, all stakeholders, which are responsible for bringing PET bottles
into the market, must recycle at minimum 25%. TOMRA is in discussions
with all relevant stakeholders regarding a future roll-out of its
currently piloted rePlanet centers.

Oktober in Kraft treten, sagte Bundesumweltminister Jürgen Trittin.

TOMRA SYSTEMS:
Multex Estimates Konsens: Outperform (1,57),
EPS: 3,10 NOK

Your questions were many and your frustration apparent. Regarding the share price, it has definitely gone down in the past weeks and this, to a great extent, has to do with Germany and the time it has taken to make certain decisions regarding technology solutions for the automated German deposit system, which will be up and running as of October 1, 2003.
TOMRA cannot do not anything about these processes - they must run their course.
But we are involved in the technology discussions currently and are doing our utmost to develop the solution the german retail and beverage industries require. We should know more at the end of March.
Regarding your comment about our shareholder policy, I can only say that we communicate with our shareholders in accordance with the rules of the oslo Stock Exchange.
We recently sent out our quarterly report which gives an update of our various markets as well as what we expect in the short term.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Pfandautomatenfirmen erwarten teils starken Geschäftszuwachs
Mittwoch 2. April 2003, 14:13 Uhr
Research
Berlin, 02.

TRITTIN: INDUSTRIE MUSS ZUSAGEN EINHALTEN
