Sony-led team to storm onto Net
PlayStation.com to sell video-game consoles, software via Internet

      KAZUNARI YOKOTA
      Staff writer

Electronics giant Sony Corp. is showing all the signs of
dot.com mania. With a new Internet joint venture called
PlayStation.com (Japan) Inc., the company is heading
full speed into the electronic-commerce business, looking
to use its new Web site to market software and to flog its
new video-game console PlayStation2, which hits the
      market on March 4.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has teamed up with 11 investors to launch
PlayStation.com, an online video game, movie and music retailer. The alliance consists
of four distributors - including Seven-Eleven Japan Co. in its second venture with
Sony - and seven game-software makers including Namco Ltd.

"This will be the first step toward the era of electronic distribution, when contents and
services will be sent to the user directly from the server," said Ken Kutaragi, president
      of Sony Computer Entertainment.

The creation of PlayStation.com is a clear signal that Sony is preparing for the Internet
era, and that it is serious about its plans for the network-capable PlayStation2 to
replace the personal computer in the home.

PlayStation2 will also be sold on the new Web site, which also will distribute digitized
movies, games and music to PlayStation2 consoles starting in 2001.

Kutaragi said Sony brought in different types of partners for PlayStation.com in order to
create a "common public platform" for the new game console. Kutaragi also indicated
that Sony would consider launching a similar dot.com business in other parts of the
globe when PlayStation2 goes on sale worldwide in the fall.

A lot is riding on the anticipated success of PlayStation2, complete with a
digital-versatile-disc (DVD) player, to be priced here at 39,800 yen ($372). Sony is
shipping 1 million units to Japanese stores in the first two days, and monthly production
is then scheduled at 600,000 to 700,000.

By using the new Web site to promote PlayStation2, Sony is looking to compete with
other game-console manufacturers, namely Microsoft Corp. of the U.S. and a venture
between Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Nintendo Co. Those companies also
are about to come out with network-capable game machines.

Sony is looking as well to compete with Japan`s king of e-commerce: Softbank Corp.
"By using PlayStation.com, Sony can become a great competitor of Softbank in the
electronic-commerce field," said Kazuharu Miura, an analyst at Daiwa Institute of
      Research.

SCE set up PlayStation.com with capital of 480 million yen on Feb. 1. At the end of
March, the new company will conduct a private placement of new shares, equivalent to
roughly 20% of its stake, to the 11 companies including Seven-Eleven Japan,
video-rental chain operator Culture Convenience Club Co., toy wholesaler Happinet
Corp., Digicube Co., which sells game software through convenience stores, and
seven game developers: Namco, Konami Co., Square Co., Enix Corp., Capcom
Co., Bandai Co. and Koei Co

Konami To Split Stock To Make
      Shares More Afforable

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan`s Konami Co. (9766) said
Tuesday it will conduct a 2-for-1 stock split May 19 for
shareholders registered as of March 31.

Assuming that no convertible bonds are converted into
stocks, the move will double the number of outstanding
shares for the video game software developer to 113.7
      million.

A Konami spokesman said the stock split is aimed at making
the share price more affordable to investors. Konami shares
ended Tuesday up Y1,600 at Y19,700
