The Overachievers
JetBlue Flies First-Class Path
Lisa DiCarlo, 09.Dec.03, 1:15 PM ET
NEW YORK - By now it`s almost cliché to point to JetBlue Airways as the biggest success story the airline industry has seen in decades. Indeed, the company has been blessed with a three-year-long string of almost always glowing press coverage. But it`s hard to argue with performance.

The Overachievers Of 2002
The Overachievers Of 2001
Even last week`s news that JetBlue`s (nasdaq: JBLU - news - people ) fourth-quarter operating margins would fall short doesn`t diminish its achievements this year. The company is on track to surpass $1 billion in annual revenue in 2003, after less than four years in business. The company`s founder and chief executive, David Neeleman, has always been confident, even cocky, about the company`s prospects. Back in January 2001, he told us that the company, which was then still private, "would never have an unprofitable quarter."
Quite a heady statement, especially for an airline. But it turns out that, so far, Neeleman has been right. Through the first nine months of 2003, JetBlue`s sales were $735 million versus $448 million in the year-ago period. Net income more than doubled in that time frame, to $84 million. (2003 results include $22.8 million in U.S. wartime assistance which, net of income taxes and profit sharing, amounted to $11.5 million).
