Banc of America analyst Jeff Walkenhorst said second-quarter handset numbers are tracking in-line with his estimates and that Nokia remains his top pick in the sector.
Handset units will likely meet the firm's 214 million June-quarter estimate, he said, and added that worries over a weak April, inventory builds and macroeconomic trends are overdone.
Recent weakness at Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - people ), Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) and Qualcomm (nasdaq: QCOM - news - people ) should be viewed as a buying opportunity and reiterated his "buy" rating for each company.
"We remain positive on Nokia primarily because of its improving handset portfolio and potential for margin / earnings-per-share upside this year," the analyst wrote in a Monday research note to investors.
Importantly, new subscriber additions, which made up around 50% of handset sales, are trending in-line so far this quarter, Walkenhorst said, with strength in the Chinese market offsetting weakness in Brazil and India. The analyst said he expects this trend to continue at least through May.
Walkenhorst also said most U.S. regions will have a normal inventory balance during the June quarter.
He estimated the four biggest U.S. carriers -- Verizon (nyse: VZ - news - people ) Wireless, Sprint Nextel (nyse: S - news - people ), Cingular and T-Mobile -- will report an inventory build of around 750,000 to 1 million units and higher average selling prices in the second quarter.
Less positive was the analyst's report on net additions in the code-division multiple access (CDMA) market, which were down 48%, quarter-over-quarter, and 29%, year-over-year. Still, he said he expects "a big rebound" in CDMA over the next two months due to demand in emerging markets and in Japan and Korea.
Banc of American maintained a price target of $27 on Nokia, $57 on Qualcomm, and $25 on Motorola.

(kat/rem)
