Focus Minerals Already Has Plenty Of Cash Flowing In From Coolgardie, As Work On A Central Processing Plant Nears Completion

      By Our Man in Oz

Any time that’s spent developing a mine and the associated processing plant is disliked by investors for a simple reason: no cash flow. Near Coolgardie, in outback Western Australia, an emerging gold miner has solved that problem. Focus Minerals is maintaining cash flow while undertaking a major plant reconstruction by paying for ore to be “toll” treated. The financial effect on the company is remarkable, with the toll treating campaign expected to generate a bonus A$44 million in revenue, even while the major part of the Coolgardie project is in the construction phase. By Christmas, Focus will be one of Australia’s strongest gold miners with no debt, a retired hedging programme, its own plant in operation and being fed by a series of mines, and with the blue sky appeal of being the first miner to put a single corporate wrapper round the whole historic Coolgardie goldfield.

The value in the constant cash flow strategy was highlighted earlier this week when Focus reported on its eighth toll treating campaign which delivered a record 19,226 ounces of gold, taking to 41,401 ounces the amount of gold produced in the financial year which ended on June 30th. While the gold from Focus’s Perseverance mine was being produced at the Greenfields Mill, owned by private company FMR Investments, work continued on schedule at the Three Mile Hill processing plant which will be the centrepiece of Focus’s plans for Coolgardie. “The mill is the key,” was how Focus chief executive, Campbell Baird, described it. “We know there’s plenty of gold around Coolgardie, the challenge has always been to consolidate the resource and maintain feed to a central mill.”

Investors have been slow to recognise that Focus is on track to deliver on a plan first unveiled in early 2008. Back then the game was all about consolidating ownership of tenements in a region that should be one of Australia’s great goldfields, but which has never achieved its potential because the ground was controlled by competing companies, private syndicates, and lone prospectors. In many ways, Coolgardie played second fiddle to its close rival Kalgoorlie, almost from the day it was discovered. No sooner had the diggers of the late 19th century streamed into Coolgardie than an Irishman named Paddy Hannan stumbled across Kalgoorlie, and everyone promptly marched 39 kilometres east, leaving Coolgardie as a rich, but incomplete, goldfield.

Almost 120 years later the job of achieving Coolgardie’s potential has fallen to Focus. It’s started by consolidating the ground, and then by moving on to achieving modest production from one of a series of pits and underground mines on that same ground. In a way, Focus might be seen as a company which bit off as much as it could chew, and then some. But, having the tenements in a region known for its rich gold endowment, especially at a time of high gold prices, has been the masterstroke, albeit one that now requires the follow through of constructing a plant to handle the high volumes of ore that can, theoretically, flow from the old and new workings being developed. Once that is done, Focus will be on track to produce 80,000 ounces of gold in 2010, and more than 100,000 ounces from 2011 onwards, with mill feed coming from a variety of sources.

“We’ll have the Three Mile Hill plant operating around the end of November, early December,” Campbell said. First ore through the refurbished mill will almost certainly come from Perseverance, which is scheduled to deplete known reserves by early next year, but which could still easily have a future life as exploration steps up. “Like everything in the goldfields, drilling has only been to the exact level required to do the job. Perseverance is undrilled at depth. The early work stopped at the 225 level [about 300 metres below the surface] and that’s the cut-off for the mine feasibility.” But, now comes a clue to the future. In February last year Focus put down six trial holes to see what might lie at depth. “We got a hit in every hole about 50 or 60 metres below the 225 level”, Campbell said.

The potential for deeper ore is one of the hidden gems inside Focus, but one that it doesn’t need to rush. After Perseverance comes a “conga-line” of mines waiting to be worked. “Countess is the next mine off the rank, probably around November”, Campbell said. “Then Empress in December or January, followed by The Mount, which is located near Widgiemooltha [about 70km to the south] but will start producing at around six grammes a tonne, making it very profitable even after trucking ore to Coolgardie.”

Financially, the Focus plan is steadily coming together, despite a hedge book which saw the company deliver 10,000 ounces from its latest toll treating campaign at just A$976 per ounce, while another 9,595 ounces was sold at the spot market price of A$1,175 per ounce. “For good or for bad the banks make you hedge”, Campbell said. “I’m very much a risk guy so I’m always prepared to take it on so long as it’s a rational price. We’ve got another 9,038 ounces to go at just on A$1,000 an ounce in the next campaign in September which will close out the hedge programme.”

Once the hedge book is closed investors will be able to see a clean gold mining company. Capital to refurbish the Three Mill Hill mill was provided as part of a A$28 million fundraising completed earlier this year, with A$20 million being spent on the mill itself and A$8 million on exploration. Focus was also carrying about A$16 million in debt which was used to pay some of the previous Coolgardie tenement holders. But here’s where the toll treating cash kicks in. Campbell said revenue from gold sales this year will total about A$44 million, with costs running at about A$26 million, leaving around A$18 million as profit, more than enough to retire the debt.

“By Christmas we’ll be debt free, have our own operating plant, and have several underground mines in production”, Campbell said. “We’ll also be hedge free, and printing money.” What he might have added is that Focus will be able to get on with the business of systematically exploring one of Australia’s most lightly drilled goldfields, despite its unique place in history as the discovery which led to Kalgoorlie, and was then almost forgotten.
