As Australia rides the resources wave, big names Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton prove firm favourites with investors. But what are the other players in the resources sector worth watching? Today, Switzer catches up with top analyst, former geologist and founder of Breakaway Investment Group, Stephen Bartrop, on SWITZER on Sky News Business Channel to find out.
Stock selections
Given the recent resource boom, Bartrop has proved a popular guest at the dinner table.
“If you look at the resource sector, it’s about 32 per cent of the ASX 200 and half of that is BHP and Rio.”
But he says the other 14 to 16 per cent is what the table talk is all about.
“They range from small explorers right thorough to the Woodsides and the Santoses – that’s where the interest lies.”
The trick, say Bartrop, is to go for a long-life mine and a low-cost company.
“Really, when you look at China going forward and commodities, essentially, you’ve got one parcel which are the bulk commodities; one must have iron ore exposure and coal.”
So what are his top picks?
For coal, his money is on Whitehaven Coal.
For iron ore, he says, “It’s difficult to get where the value is with good projects.” Still his pick is Sundance Resources.
For copper, Pan Australian and Equinox.
He says it’s in these marginal players where the money can be made.
“You look at – for example – an extreme case, things like Felix Coal. I remember we were looking at that 50 cents … it’s now $19.50,” he says.
“So it’s those types of increases that deliver the returns in the space that’s outside BHP and Rio.”
Growing demand
Bartrop says the future for the sector looks bright.
“As we heard from the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank last week, we’re in a fairly substantial commodities boom. But if you stand back and look at what’s going on, we’ll probably turn around and say the GFC was really just a blip in a long-term commodity boom which just reflected the industrialisation of these emerging economies.”
Bartrop says Australia is the lucky country in that it is so intimately connected to China and India and other emerging economies.
So, what can go wrong?
“It’s all about the interaction of financial markets and commodity markets,” says Bartrop. “So that is certainly an area of risk.”
Still, he says, “the expectation is that China will continue to grow” along with the other emerging economies, and that pace will slow.
“But I don’t think anybody has any doubts over the long term there is going to be substantial importing into China and certainly India is just around the corner for commodities which are ideally supplied by Australia.”

Einer der Subunternehmer wurde in Shares bezahlt und hat aufgrund interner Neuorganiesierung seine Shares umgeschicht.
Die neuen Bohrungen sind im Gange und sollten auch bis ende August
genügend nachweisbare Higrade Reserven bestätigen.

offensichtlich ist man sich in australischen Foren einig, dass es sich hier um einen grossen Investor handelt, der lediglich seine Shares "intern" transferiert hat. Ist wohl eine rein "buchhalterische" Transaktion, in welche man nicht zu viel hinein interpretieren sollte.

Da war eine Kapitalerhöhung zu 15 Australcent schwer unterzubringen
und heute kauft jemand fast 100 Millionen Aktien ohne große Probleme zu 14 Cent. Da muß ja auch jemand 100 Millionen Aktien so mir nicht dir nichts abgegeben haben im ganz großen Stil! Was ist denn nun hier faul??
Bei über 100 Mill Shares müßte der Kurs doch kräftig anziehen.
Es passiert aber nix.

Als indikator dass hier etwas grosses passieren koente. meistens ist es doch so, dass fonds erst ab 3-5 USD oder Euro einsteigen duerfen. vielleicht ist es auch eine privatperson ? Wer weiss das schon. aber es zeigt eines ganz klar. DER WEG STIMMT und das ZIEL WARTET.

Erstaunliches ist heute in Australien passiert. Da hatten wir seit Wochen tagesvolumen um die 3-6 Mio Shares und dann kommt heute EINER und kauft nach Börsenschluss auf einmal 96 Mio Shares!! Das sind rund 13 Mio AUD.
Das kann eigentlich nur ein ganz großer sein... z.B. ein grosser Fonds.
