Greenland Minerals and Energy Limited Upgrades 79 Per Cent of the Kvanefjeld Resource to Indicated Status Providing a Strong Foundation to Leverage for the Future - Autralianinvetor, Cover Story - Aug09

      - Mineral Exploration and Development Company, Greenland Minerals and Energy Limited (Greenland Minerals), is focused on unlocking the mineral riches of Greenland, one of the world’s last natural resource frontiers. -
      www.australianinvestor.com.au/magazine.asp?id=3147

"In validation of its strategy Greenland Minerals has released its quarterly report for the period ending June 30, 2009 detailing a number of key achievements expected to drive value for the company and shareholders in the future.

Mr. John Mair, General Manager of Greenland Minerals and Energy Limited explained that in line with its focus on the flagship Kvanefjeld project in Greenland, the company last quarter achieved a resource upgrade for the deposit.

“We acquired an exploration licence two years ago over the highly-prospective northern Ilimaussaq Complex and at the finalisation of the acquisition there was a historic non-compliant uranium resource within the license area at Kvanefjeld plateau.

“On the basis of two exploration programs conducted within 2007 and 2008; we have demonstrated that the project has a very significant JORC compliant resource of rare earth elements, zinc and uranium,” Mr. Mair commented.

The resource statement upgrade marked a significant increase in resource tonnage to 457 million tonnes in addition to improvement in the resource category.

“Importantly 79 per cent of the rare earth oxide, zinc and uranium resource is now in the Indicated category.”

The project is currently the subject of a pre-feasibility study, which is on schedule for completion in late third quarter, 2009.

This asset represents a strategic advantage for Greenland Minerals with the importance of rare earths elements in the manufacture and development of many green technologies and consumer electronic items now widely recognised.

The successful development of Kvanefjeld will allow for a steady supply of these specialty metals to European, Japanese, Korean and North American markets.

A challenge for Greenland Minerals presently is “the fact that our ore style is unique, at this point not being mined anywhere else in the world.

“As such market investors are eager to see how it is that this type of ore is able to be mined economically and in an environmentally responsible manner.

“Our focus therefore with pre-feasibility studies, is to map out how the project may work and focus on the development of a process flow sheet,” Mr. Mair stated.

As Greenland Minerals develops Kvanefjeld it is supported “by our proven ability, demonstrated over the last few years, to build a solid foundation on a corporate level as well as a technical front.

“If we can demonstrate a viable process flow sheet we can eliminate a significant portion of the perceived risk and we will be free to continue developing the asset toward revealing the big picture of resource potential.”

In order to develop this flow sheet further, Greenland Minerals has instigated a sampling program as part of its planned 2009 drilling field season.

Up to 2000 metres of HQ diamond drilling will be carried out across the ore body, to collect representative samples of the various known ore zones and to allow metallurgical variability testing to commence later this year.

In addition to the core samples, the Company intends to excavate up to ten tonnes of bulk sample for comminution and ore characterisation testwork. ( We probably won’t need to do this during this season)

“On a corporate front we have also, importantly, been able to solidify our Greenlandic subsidiary, and grow our presence within Greenland.”

Too, the company has been fortunate to attract the skills and experience of Mr. Michael Hutchinson as a Non-Executive Chairman, Mr. Mair told the Australia Investor.

“Michael is very valuable (well respected) in the London Market owing to being a longstanding Director, and former Chairman of the London Metals Exchange. He has provided a vast insight into the potential of rare earths as an emerging commodity group.

“It is important to take into account where the country of Greenland is at the moment. Through the referendum last year the country has placed itself on the path to increased independence from Denmark.

“This will lead to a shift from shared minerals rights to holding 100 per cent control.

“Their independence is tied up with economic sustainability and the development of a strong minerals industry is crucial for Greenland’s independence.

“As such mining is very much on the country’s agenda at the moment.”

Mr. Mair concluded, “Kvanefjeld is emerging as one of the most significant projects in its commodity sector and is rapidly becoming one of the largest undeveloped deposits.” "

      "Gutsy move Rod, well done.

      1. Whats your gut feeling re a positive YES for the go ahead to mine.
      2. How strong is the Greenie influence in Greenland. ( non indiginous)
      3. Has there been any initial response to the Chinese gov attempt to monopolise REE, from any Western Government.
      thanks

      "Hi Harold

These questions are right on the thin red line of what I can and cant answer but I will try and give you something.

1 My personal feeling (and this is my PERSONAL FEELING ONLY) is that the political risk scenario was made clear some time ago when we had the media storm that surfaced internationally. If we were going to have our hats passed to us it would have been at that point.

The new government which historically has been against Uranium of any description probably found it easier to argue against controversial issues when not in power but once handed the reins and understanding set in regarding the choices at hand; fishing seal skins water, etc etc etc, the decision was made then in my opinion. Now its down to process. However I could be wrong.

The issues to be addressed come down to environmental and social impacts. Everyone should keep in mind that the problems we face (or have faced) are not unique to Greenland, quite the opposite in fact; every mine everywhere in the world faces these same issues. It is a matter of working with all stakeholders (local and national)along with the authorities at every level so that everyone has a say. It is only though honest open dialogue will you "educate" a non mining culture. The issues that most Greenlanders raised were actually quite simple. Hence the recent visit to Perth by the G/L Authorities to better understand what these issues are and how they can emulate our management of them.

We have been focused on the two issues we ourselves identified many many months ago as we knew these would become the main "showstoppers" if you like and thanks to that careful planning we are quite prepared.

      2. There is no "Green movement" in Greenland as such, more of an anti Uranium movement called the Green Earth Charter. They number around 30-40 people in all of G/L. Essentially they are remnants from the original Three Mile Island era campaign when Denmark decided not to take the nuclear path. These are the only identifiable people that are vocally against the project. To manage this, representatives of this group have been included throughout the whole process and they have come to understand that there is much more at stake here than simply saying "no" to Uranium due to emotional reasons only. I just watched a show on Iceland and its collapse on 60 minutes and I can tell you that G/L are watching very very carefully what is happening to their bretheren there.
There is not much else in G/L sitting up and saying "hey Im worth XXX millions of dollars in revenue for the state" This project is on top of the agenda I can tell you that.

      3. Yes several, Europe mainly then Japan are quite interested in where all of our product will end up.

      Thansk for your interest Harold

Please note that I am the Managing Director of GGG . I am happy to answer questions on GGG providing you understand that I can only give answers that are not price sensitive and/or are available in the market.
